Sorry .. it merges in chronological order.
Clearly it's just a me thing, but I also don't understand why anyone cares why anyone else posts on P&M. There have also been a lot of the posts in these various threads that contain no substance whatsoever. They're not political at all or even reasons why they post on this board. I'm honestly baffled.
presuming i can voice that. that snark was not necessary It wasn't meant to be snark at all. It was a simple statement of fact.

I have a great solution here because that's what I do - solve stuff. The Mods could make a board entitled, "If You Must Lack Substance, Please Do So Here". That way nobody could complain that this should be there or that shouldn't be there because I have a feeling Moon and The Mods caught some grief over these threads from those who wish the rules to be strictly abided by.
You are welcome.

well, since all of the responses are now disconnected from the threads, with no way of knowing who is responding to what, you have basically made dada poetry out of something that everyone here seemed to feel had value. of course, that is your choice. you're the boss. but i fervently disagree with it, ftr. presuming i can voice that......

presuming i can voice that. Some call it mirror-threading, others refer to them as parody threads or parrot threads. It's not all than uncommon. It does create some clutter but it can be rather amusing. It starts when someone creates a thread that's rather pointless, or stupid, or way too serious, etc. Someone else, will create a thread with the same or similar title and put their own spin on it. Or in this case several people did. The fact that you're wondering why anyone cares why anyone else posts in those boards should be an indicator as to why there were numerous threads on the same questionable topic. Yes, it's definitely a valid topic to ask why do You post in a certain venue, then allow everyone to post their story. It's a completely reasonable and useful dialogue. However when some creates a thread to declare why I post in a certain venue, that's rather silly. Hence the parroting. Personally I wouldn't see any harm if you had left all the threads stand and see which ones take on a life of their own. I had some fun in one of them and yes, it had absolutely nothing to do with politics. I make no excuses nor apologies for that. I contend that any polite conversation is a good conversation regardless of where it starts. I also don't see any real damage done by merging all of these dookies into one heap. And I'm baffled that there's any lingering complaints. If the clutter goes against the nature of the forum owner and staff, so be it. The individual continuity was lost in some chaos because of the merge. Is this a problem worth losing any sleep? No one was writing War and Peace in any of these threads were they? tl;dr NBD

I think we can post non-political stuff here - just not on the Politics Board. As you probably have noticed, some people get all out of sorts when they think a thread/post is on the wrong board. I bet their canned goods are in alphabetical order. They do not want to anything BUT politics and politics only. The Board Police jump on that stuff like stink on a skunk. It probably would have been ok had we started the threads in EE. It was a poor choice on my part.

There are at least two kinds of games. One could be called finite, the other infinite. A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, an infinite game for the purpose of continuing the play.
Finite players play within boundaries, infinite players play with boundaries.

djAdvocate - no one ever said a rule had to be broken before a moderator takes action on something. And the occasional non- political thread on the politics board is also ok. But retread sort of hit the nail on the head when he mentioned clutter. That's really what it boiled down to. I know the same can sort of be said about all the various trump threads, or the constant stream of stuff from the same couple people. But you know, we already do have a policy that if duplicate threads on the same subject are started by different individuals, then the newer one gets merged into the one started first. This is essentially the same thing in my opinion.

You might do it because you enjoy interaction with some people here and you don't have your butt cheeks clinched 24/7 and enjoy a little lighthearted banter rather than all the serious stuff all the time.
That's why I would do it....but not about a cat.

true. i COULD be the playful sort that MIGHT do something like that. but that would require tearing off the butt tape.

Well....I can't lack substance and be creative at the same time. I'll leave that to my new little brother. That's the only combination where I'm particularly adept at multitasking. From what I've seen lately there's a huge market for that in television advertising. Perhaps that might be my calling. Idk. I'd probably fit right in with the contemporaries.

Finite and Infinite Games by James Carse Overthinking but I like the way he thinks, so it was a fun read. There were a few pearls which stand up quite well, even when isolated. (burbles lips) I read the whole summary but didn't comment because I figured I'd be beating a dead horse. You managed to single out one of my least favourite passages. "The opposite of resonance is amplification." Except that in design of any kind of electrical or mechanical device on the basis of wave mechanics, resonance is typically the mechanism used to generate amplification. Mathematically, a resonance defines a point of maximum gain (amplification), including infinite gain for what is called "perfect resonance". In other words, while resonance and amplification aren't wholly synonymous in wave mechanics, they're bosom buddies. Furthermore, resonance describes phenomena such as static noise, vibration, unstable positive feedback (such as feedback though a microphone). As a choice of analog for "symphony", "harmony", etc., which is presumably what Mr. Carse means, you couldn't do worse than picking resonance. "A choir is the unified expression of a voice resonating with each other, a loudspeaker is the amplification of a single voice, excluding all others." No, a choir is a collection of voices singing in harmony, with parasitic resonances deliberately eliminated from digital recordings during mastering. A loudspeaker amplifies anything, harmonious or not, signaled to it, which may well be a recording of a choir.
"A bell resonantes, a cannon amplifies. We listen to the bell, we are silenced by the cannon." We hear both. Whether we're silenced, provoked, excited, etc. by the noise depends entirely on context for both. "The loudspeaker, muting all other voices and therefore all possibility of conversation, is not listened to at all, and therefore loses its voice and becomes mere noise." Demonstrably false when speaking of an actual loudspeaker. If you're looking to make a profound metaphorical statement, Mr. Carse, I recommend not choosing analogs completely antithetical to the metaphors. Up next in the Big Book of Carse Analogies: "Life is fuzzy and soft, like a porcupine.", and "The opposite of politics is peanuts. Politics are bitter, but everyone eventually chokes to death on a peanut." Deep stuff.

But there is a board for things like that. It's called "everything else". IMHO I think maybe we created those foolish 'why I post' threads because politics have becoming too divisive, too coarse and acrimonious for most of us, and we needed a break.
The political board can't fix the quality of the nation's political discourse, but we could make a bunch of silly threads so we could collectively goof off for a while.
Sometimes the threads here get a little too tense, and we can't stop and collectively have a beer together, but we can be silly together.
Which reminds me, it's very hot today and there is a nice cold Stiegel Radler in the fridge. And a beer glass waiting in the freezer. Cheers.

There's a thread on Iran right now that, in less than half a page, has turned into a bunch of ladies gossiping over the garden fence. Must not be very much of substance that can be said.
And I'm told my thread wasn't on point and had no substance.
