Very cool! If you ever decide to rent it out, let us know on the boards here first.

The structure is appropriately 750-square feet and will be entirely handicapped accessible. My dad turns 76 this week, he still gets around just fine on his own, but you never know. He will be able to pull his truck up to the front porch and get into the front door without any steps in the way. We’re still waiting on parts to finish the front porch roof, but they should be in this week.

Very cool! If you ever decide to rent it out, let us know on the boards here first. We’ve been trying to decide what to do with it when he’s no longer with us. We could rent it out, or use it as a make-shift love shack 🙂, although the last boy moves out next fall, so our whole house will be a love shack 😑

It looks lovely! Your yard and surroundings are beautiful! Thank you, we have 35 acres of woods, fields and a stream. Best of all, no close neighbors. When I get the dogs to stop barking, it’s very quiet.

Very pretty!
We visited Mackinaw island a couple years ago, that part of Michigan was extremely pretty. Not familiar with much of the rest of it.
Good for you making a nice place for your dad.

Your first pic made me think of Lincoln logs. I hope everyone loves it and enjoys the trees.

Heres a couple more photos, they’re not the best since it was dark this morning when I took them. The first one is a shot from the back to give you some idea of how we tied it in. The second shot is of the pool in the basement. It’s a mess because we had to modify the roof to put the addition on top of it and I still have insulation everywhere to clean up, but it gives you some idea of what it looks like.

That looks really nice! Very comfy and convenient. Close to you, but with privacy for all.
Now I want a pool in my basement.

Your house/the one you're building for your dad looks FABULOUS!
You are absolutely correct... Who wouldn't want to live there?!?
From what you've said, you have a ways to go. But what you've done is a ton of work! It's beautiful.
I think it's great that you've thought about your dad before the time came when you had to, and it was too late.
GOOD JOB!

At the risk of sharing too much on-line, I thought I’d post a few photos of my house addition project. This is the “Cabin” we are building for my dad to come live with us. It’s actually attached to our house (seen in the background), via a common foundation (our pool is in his basement). Anyway, I proud of the way it’s turning out, even though we have a ways to go (we put windows in this weekend, still need to finish the interior). Who wouldn’t want to live here in their retirement? I’m curious. How will you vent the moisture that will evaporate from the pool?

I’m curious. How will you vent the moisture that will evaporate from the pool? The pool actually has been in place for 15 years. We have a vapor barrier between the pool room and the sub floor that will prevent most moisture migration. The pool room is self-contained and has its own heating system with no air exchange between the pool and the living portions of our house. The real secret is to raise the room temperature above the pool temperature before you remove the cover, this stops excessive evaporation. For reference, I keep the pool at 86 degrees, so I can raise the room temp to 88 with the furnace in about 10 minutes. It great for the swimmers, but hot for the watchers. I lower the room temp when the cover goes back on. We also have a small dehumidifier in the room to address any excess moisture with the cover on. I can dry things out within an hour or two, which prevents mold/mildew growth.

Was that a outdoor pool that is now indoors ? Super jellies Seriously, that is a bad ass addition, your dad is very lucky to be cared for so well. We live in Michigan too, just in the Detroit metro area, but we would love to get a cabin up north

I know a sweet little ole lady who is available to share that georgeous place and she is low maintenance. Ok, where is the "me, me hand waving" smiley when I need it. But seriously that is one fine place you are building.

The pool was always planned to be indoors, who wants an outdoor pool in Michigan that you can only use for three months? We use ours more in the winter than the summer. It really helps beat the winter blahs.
Just a couple more things. The whole room is waterproof, so you can splash, spray as much water as you want and it won’t soak into the walls, everything goes into floor drains which exit outside. The pool is also a salt water system so there is no chlorine smell. Being out of the sunlight also minimizes any algae growth.

I want to hear about the sauna. Don't tell me that you built an indoor pool without throwing a sauna in there somewhere.
