I've been trying to slowly accumulate the classic Disney movies on DVD because my son is a big Disney fan and hasn't seen most of the ones I grew up with (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, etc.). I went to Amazon because that's where I get most things... apparently Disney doesn't just sell its movies like normal DVDs. The older movies are sold as some sort of "platinum" set that more than doubles the actual price.
I'm looking at The Little Mermaid now and it's being sold as Diamond Edition for $55!!!! It's a damn movie from the early 90's FFS! I had to buy The Lion King off eBay because they pulled the same shit. Why can't they just sell the movie at $20 like everyone else on the damn planet? I don't need any extras - just the movie please!
And then I heard the news that they are pulling their offerings off Netflix and offering their own streaming service.. for $6/month! Friday night is "movie night" with DS and each week we try to find a new one he will like. 2 weeks ago we watched Moana off Netflix and it was wonderful. He loves Disney movies, but I am not adding $6/month to my budget because Disney is a bunch of grimy bastards.
What are your thoughts on this?

I know the videos may be used, but if still in good condition it may be worth it.

Does Disney still vault their movies? Only offering some titles at a time? The ones vaulted used to go up in price due to limited supply.
Disney, the de beers of animation.

We still have paper tickets from visiting the park in 1977. They say they are good forever, so I am waiting for them to hit a daily entry fee of $200 and then use them! At the rate of rising entry prices, it might be 2024!

I see a LOT of kids movies at garage sales. Apparently Disney may have sold it's soul for $$$.

I'll probably have to get all of them off eBay.

Does your library put dvd's on sale? I've bought movies and TV series from library. Haven't had any problem with "bad" cd. They discard ones not checked out in ages, etc. I'll keep my eye open next time I'm in library for Disney.

I don't buy many DVDs anymore, but ebay is my go to place for them. I think I got the Game of Thrones for like $12/season brand new.

Disney's price gouging will come back to bite them eventually and spur a "grey market" for Disney classic movies. If people can get the movies off eBay for less than half the retail price - new, not used - then I imagine sales in retail stores will suffer.

Why WOULDN'T Disney do this? They're a company, and they make more money doing it this way. They're in business to make profit, not to keep their profits limited. They continue to have huge demand for old movies like most movies do NOT, this is their way of limiting supply to keep prices up just like any smart company would.

and I'll just keep buying them on eBay for less. Guess the people buying the Platinum/Diamond versions have more money than sense.

I am scratching my head here.
I can get Disney movies for $19.99 at my local Meijer superstore. And I checked, they are original Disney DVDs. You all can't? Granted I haven't bought one in like 2 years. But so mach changes in 2 years?

That is when the dollar actually was worth a little bit, unlike today's dollar.

They "vault" some of the big popular (typically old) ones so that they aren't constantly available. You can still buy tons of them regularly though.
