I've been trying to slowly accumulate the classic Disney movies on DVD because my son is a big Disney fan and hasn't seen most of the ones I grew up with (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, etc.). I went to Amazon because that's where I get most things... apparently Disney doesn't just sell its movies like normal DVDs. The older movies are sold as some sort of "platinum" set that more than doubles the actual price. I'm looking at The Little Mermaid now and it's being sold as Diamond Edition for $55!!!! It's a damn movie from the early 90's FFS! I had to buy The Lion King off eBay because they pulled the same shit. Why can't they just sell the movie at $20 like everyone else on the damn planet? I don't need any extras - just the movie please! And then I heard the news that they are pulling their offerings off Netflix and offering their own streaming service.. for $6/month! Friday night is "movie night" with DS and each week we try to find a new one he will like. 2 weeks ago we watched Moana off Netflix and it was wonderful. He loves Disney movies, but I am not adding $6/month to my budget because Disney is a bunch of grimy bastards. What are your thoughts on this? But even on Amazon, you don't have to purchase the diamond edition. I'm looking at a Blu-ray from the same seller of Little mermaid for $18.99 with Prime 1-day shipping. I prefer the DVD because the portable player is not Blu-Ray. I don't want have to figure out which movies I can take on a long trip and which ones I can't. Yes, I'm a pain like that.

I am scratching my head here. I can get Disney movies for $19.99 at my local Meijer superstore. And I checked, they are original Disney DVDs. You all can't? Granted I haven't bought one in like 2 years. But so mach changes in 2 years? It's probably not every Disney movie ever made though. They "vault" some of the big popular (typically old) ones so that they aren't constantly available. You can still buy tons of them regularly though. Probably. We have Cinderella, Lion King, Pocahontas, Jungle Book (my most favorite Disney movie ever), Finding Nemo, Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan, Aladdin, 101 Dalmatians and Pinnochio. Thats a small list of all the Disney movies available.

My mom still has all my old VHS versions. I had a ton because I was a spoiled brat. Too bad I no longer have a VHS player. You can grab one at yard sale for 50 cents

Disney's price gouging will come back to bite them eventually and spur a "grey market" for Disney classic movies. If people can get the movies off eBay for less than half the retail price - new, not used - then I imagine sales in retail stores will suffer. This isn't anything new. I remember Disney doing this with VCR tapes too. We still have a VCR. And you can get disney movies for a quarter. The peanut thinks she won the freaking lottery when we go to a garage sale or something and pick them up.

Neither of my kids are interested in the old Disney movies. I forced them to watch the old Jungle Book, but they're spoiled with the new one. They both watched Moana like 100 times though (and yes, we now have a chicken named Hei Hei)

Have you tried Walmart.com? I haven't shopped there for movies, but I often find other things at Walmart online at a lower price than the same item on Amazon.

Check them out from the library. Puts holds on anything you want. Watch them when they show up. Free. You guys can't do that where you are?

That works for older kids or adults who only want to watch a movie once or twice. But for some horrific, ungodly, awful reason younger kids want to watch their favorites over and over and over and over. It's sad and wrong and makes you want to strangle the little boogers, but it seems pretty common amongst them so you can at least comfort yourself that yours isn't defective.

It was cute but I kind of did want to choke it myself a couple of times. I liked that movie.

Before I had kids, I hadn't spent a lot of time around young children, so some things were a bit of a surprise.
As far as the movie thing goes, a few years before my son was born I distinctly remember a close friend describing how if her 3 year old watched (don't remember which Disney film, maybe 101 Dalmations?) one more time, she was going to have to kill herself. The friend and her husband were very intelligent and I remember how surprised and sad I was for them... you know, having a special needs child like that. I hoped that their child wasn't profoundly impaired and would one day be able to at least live independently.***
Yeah, karma got me on that one. And a few others...
*** Edited to add - for those of you who haven't spent much time around small kids - it's really, really normal for all small kids to watch things they like multiple times. Some will only watch a few things and they want to watch them over and over and over. Doesn't mean there's a thing wrong with them. In fact, the opposite is true; means they're normal. I was the idiot here.

My kids have watched movies repeatedly. We've also rented them and returned them with no problems. They might watch them a few times, or just once. When the movie goes back, the kids just move on to the next thing. NBD.

Yeah, but you can pretty easily work around it. Check them out for two weeks and watch as many times as they want. If it is on hold for someone else, immediately place another hold. If not, renew it for two more weeks. Keep a rotation of several movies going. Better than paying exorbitant prices for just one. When you find one cheap enough somewhere that they like enough, then buy it if you wish. Or not.

I remember my dad taking me to see it in the theater and of course I cried at the end. I loved Copper and Tod. I do have the record album somewhere though. Maybe that was what I was thinking of.

MJ2.0 - send me a list of what you're looking for. My town has a volunteer bookstore and we have a pretty good size collection of dvds that are $2. I know there was a lot of kiddie ones and I can take a look and see what I can find. I know last time I looked there was a buttload of Barbie (gag) movies so if anyone is looking for those, let me know.

They controlled the release of Disney movies like this back when it was vhs too. It's fucking genius marketing - a tight fist around the supply so everyone goes apeshit when they do release it and they get a lot more money because you can't say oh I'll get it next month.
This is why my Disney freak of a brother was buying dvds like Cinderella way before he even had a kid.
They're not getting off Netflix right away from what I've heard. We still have an hour I think. If you really like the movies it's prob worth buying and getting the digital copy. I just watch all my bros digital copies. 😜

Back in college when I was jonsing for a few Disney movies my dad got me almost the whole collection by less scrupulous means. 😈

We still have paper tickets from visiting the park in 1977. They say they are good forever, so I am waiting for them to hit a daily entry fee of $200 and then use them! At the rate of rising entry prices, it might be 2024! hopefully I'm there when you try to use them. He's right. They've long since honored any ticket without an expiration...and it's why in the late 90s, give or take, every Disney ticket got an expiration and they started making those multi-day passes expire within a certain time after the first use. So yea, you can take one of those E passes from back when they charged per ride and get in for free. Hell you can do it with the crappier tickets too. At least it was still policy a few years ago and I haven't heard any different.

I got them in 1994. Maybe I'll just let my 3 kids fight over them when they're grown

I paid WAY too much money in overdue fines for 2 Mickey Mouse videos that we repeatedly borrowed and we're late returning before I bought the damn things online for a "family" Christmas gift. I'm pretty sure I paid about $20 for the set of 4 videos and a tied on 5th video and about $40 in fines. Not my proudest financial memory...
