Laughing about naming a kid Ariel. I had a student named Ayla. Shades of her mom being a Jean Auel fan with the Clan of Cave Bear. I have a coworker named Ariel and another coworker who named her daughter Arielle. It's a Hebrew name, what's so funny about that?

Anyone who names their child a name that will hold them up to ridicule is not thinking of their child. Fortunately not many get the names"Ayla" as opposed to being named after The Little Mermaid. Besides, how about a name that can sound adult since they'll spend most of their lives being one? Ariel is cutesy when you're 5, when you're 25, you sound like a child not an adult. Makes me think of the names that will permanently relegate you to a job as opposed to a career.

Ariel and Arielle are very common names among young women around the age of 30 or so. My cousin named her daughter Ariel. She was an honors student in college and has embarked on a successful career.

I have one DGS whose name is taken straight from Greek mythology and the other one from the bible. Both names are quite uncommon today. And their middle names are just as rare. So unique names for the cutest DGSs in the world

There are plenty of adults, men and women, with good careers who were named Ariel years before The Little Mermaid was released. The Hebrew Bible and Shakespeare predate Disney. Know anyone who goes by Ari? Guess what their given name is.

It's better than naming a baby a "old person's" name. Awww, look at baby Hortense!!!

Some old people's names are back. Emma comes to mind.

Didn't they think that 11 years after his birth that The Little Mermaid would come out?!

I think the parents were thinking something else when they named him.

I would have given anything when I was a kid to have had a name that wasn't so common. There with 5 of us in 1st grade with the same first name. Only 25 kids in entire class.

I think the parents were thinking something else when they named him. As are the vast majority of people.

I like the name Ariel, and it seems fine for and adult. They're little mermaid came out some longer ago, I might not even make the connection when introduced to someone with that name.
My personal pet peeve is apostrophes in first names.

I tried to get people to call me by my given but nooooooooo they had to call me by the common shortened version. Only thing I did was in 4th grade I started spelling it with an "I" instead of "y". My little protest. That was radical in the 50's.

To think that probably have the kids were boys, so 13 girls roughly, 5 with the same name. Probably at least 4 named Mary. Pretty much the same for the boys.
My cousin changed Debbie to Debi in the 50's. Yes, her protest.
