I thought that they would start Friday night, but no, it's tonight. I have two rescue dogs, one on each side of me (shaking and scared) and a cat sitting on my feet. It's not going to be a fun week Now don't get me wrong, I love the fireworks as long as they are in an area deemed for them to be shot off, but these aren't. Thank goodness we have had a lot of rain the past couple of weeks. I think I'm becoming one of those crotchy old people that yells" GET OFF MY YARD".

even if the weather didn't necessitate the use of the AC (the golden melts faster than the rest of us...) I would still have it on this weekend for exactly that reason - my rescue wants nothing to do with the loud noises. he's been pacing all night since they started up. the golden is passed out on the floor, with zero fucks to give. at the very least, having the windows closed helps to muffle it some. hugs to you and your guys.

I feel your pain. Bad Boy Puppy is a rescue, and the sound of fireworks or thunder sends him scurrying upstairs, which is actually impressive, considering how old he is. That dog can really move when he wants to.

I hate the 4th of July. Hate the fireworks. I don't understand why neighbors think their other neighbors would be perfectly fine with them shooting off a 2 1/2 hour fireworks display over their homes which would put Macy's East River fireworks to shame. Fireworks are illegal in my county. So where does a county TV crew go to interview city residents to ask them what they like best about the 4th of July? They head out over the county line to a fireworks-selling tent and ask my county's residents which type of fireworks they enjoy setting off best at home. And yes, suesinfl, I am that person yelling at my neighbor to aim those firework rockets at their own house and yard and not at mine.

Here you can shoot off fireworks but you need a permit but no one bothers to get one. And if you call the police for neighbors disturbing the peace because they are still shooting off fireworks at 2330, the police don't come because they are still too busy responding to other fireworks complaints in the city and county. I hate the 4th of July. It's torture for the backyard and garage cats. The indoor cats not so much. And I go all through it all over again at the stroke of midnight New Years Day.

The twins don't seem to be bothered by it. They've been going off for the last few days. I've had both of them be out there while it was going off and they've not wanted to come back in. Funny because they hate the vacuum. I was worried about how they'd do with all the noise but they seems to be ok.

I got tranquilizers from the vet for the Beckster. They help! The local idiots started Friday night. I pity the PTSD combat vets having to put up with this.

Bless all of our military members, because if it wasn't for them we would not have a holiday to celebrate.

My town had their fireworks last night. I barely heard them. Cats don't care. They just me to go away so they can stay asleep wherever they are. Nerds. I live close to the NH border, where fireworks are legal, so have been getting advertisements from the shops. I love how they pay attention to their market, really. Illegal in MA but drive 20 minutes to NH, blow them up and go home. Makes perfect sense to me!

I have a friend with a combat vet for a son. I told her to try headphones and loud music to drown out the fireworks. I hope it works for them!

I don't mind city/town organized firework displays held in parks. My county requires a permit. Home owners are not given permits to set off fireworks on their property if they live within a neighborhood.

I don't mind organized fireworks. I live in a small town where fireworks are legal this year for the first time. People in my neighborhood are going crazy with the fireworks. Last night made the 4th straight night of fireworks until about midnight to 1 AM. There is a curfew and those were broken all four nights. If I knew who it was, I'd go scream at them.
My cat is a wreck during thunderstorms and fireworks. Last night she stayed in hiding long past when the fireworks ended. Earlier, she had thought they were over and then they started up again. I feel so bad for her.
This town doesn't have it's own fireworks so the citizens don't care if they set their neighbor's house on fire.

It has happened in my area. It is tinder dry and jerks down the street are lighting rockets which inevitably land on neighbors' roofs and lawns including mine.

Many small towns around here have fireworks and spread out the nights. Saturday, Sunday, Monday and here Tuesday to end the carnival.

Does anyone pleeeeeease have any suggestions for scared dogs? I've tried everything. He has a kennel he loves - but it doesn't help. He has a thunder coat. The vet even prescribed a mild sedative. This poor dog gets so upset he drools, pukes, paces - wrecks my house trying to get under stuff. I just don't know what else to do for him. I hate this so much. His little heart goes a mile a minute. He hasn't eaten anything for 3 days that he hasn't puked up. There is nothing wrong with him other than terror because he doesn't understand. A firecracker goes off and he goes completely insane. Cuddling doesn't help. He wants nothing other than to "get away".

When we installed hardwoods in the kid's bedrooms, we couldn't let the dog go upstairs during a storm, because piles of hardwood flooring was blocking the hallway. DD was holding & petting him, & Bad Boy Puppy was shivering & drooling, he was SO panicked. DD just kept petting him, & eventually he calmed down some. Maybe call the veterinarian's office for more ideas on helping him?

So far so good. I'm sure it'll be tonight and tomorrow night but the kids will be back on the 4th so they can deal Tuesday night.

I did, busymom. The eating thing was worrying me - like maybe something else was going on. I watch him and he just eats so fast so he can get to his bowl, eat and get away. He isn't even chewing. So I know he's hungry. He acts like he wants out so I let him out to run and he chews at the wire fence. I don't know what else to do. I've done everything the vet said.
I did stop giving him the sedative because it wasn't helping and just made him walk funny. I hate drugging my dog - but maybe it takes awhile to get built up in his system? Maybe I made a mistake in stopping it? I've never had this before. It used to be that he would startle a bit but then just go on. Now....oh dear. Maybe it's because he's getting older.

Cuddling doesn't help. He wants nothing other than to "get away". Does he have a safe space to get away to? Maybe in the basement or in the bathroom/bathtub? Im lucky in that mine couldn't care less about fireworks but she's not fond of thunder. I blame my old cat. During the dog's formative years, she would look to the cat for how to react. The cat, as you can guess, didn't care about fireworks but was a wreck during storms. I once witnessed my ottoman walking through the living room with a tail. The cat couldn't figure out how I could possibly know where he was hiding. He can't seem to find one that feels good for him. He's not actually seeking a place - at least it doesn't appear so. It appears he wants out and to find who's doing it and maul them!
But yes. There are several places for him to go but nothing pleases him.

Feed him during the day, by hand, small amounts of food when it's quiet. In the evening give him the sedative about an hour before thing get going. Then find him a quiet place. The other hard hard thing to do is to not let yourself get worked up, dogs will pick up on that and will feed off of it. I have been trying the small meals several times a day, but not by hand. I did that yesterday and I think some of it stayed down so that's a good suggestion. Thanks. I'll continue.
And yes. I'm worked up and he definitely feeds off my moods. I'll try to be better. I hate this. I want people to blow their fingers off. Nothing life-threatening - just painful.

So I should continue with the sedative even though it doesn't seem to help? I suppose I should. But I'm not kidding. He walks like he's drunk. Head hung low...wobbly. Not sure which is worse.

I met one of my new neighbors. I didn't want to say anything about his dog but it sure was walking funny. Dog is stoned in preparation for fireworks. He says he starts a few days before he thinks they'll start going off.

GEL-have you thought about keeping a closet open and dark with maybe his favorite blanket (or whatever is his favorite item he seeks solace with). If it's your clothes closet, the clothes may help muffle the sound. And something on the first floor. Don't wait until evening when the fireworks start-check it out now and introduce him to it.

We have a new dog and she doesn't like fireworks. Fortunately she's not destructive like our last lab was.
We came home on Saturday and couldn't find her. We started to panic thinking we had left her outside and she'd jumped the fence. DH found her when he tripped over her in the bedroom. She was half crammed under our bed half in the closet.
We leave the bedroom door open for her, she seems content to hide in there.
The problem we're having is she's new and I am working on potty training her and she prefers to go out on a leash like she did at the pound. If a firework goes off she drags me across the lawn back to the house.
I'd prefer she go without a leash but I can't let her off right now. She jumped the fence in response to a massive explosion (hope the indulge blew up his house!) and ran right towards the busy street. Fortunately she turned when I called her and cowered on the lawn.
She's well trained on a leash so she'll stay on it when outside until the fireworks stop. It's worth some banged up ankles to keep her safe.
