for all the resolutions that are sworn each year, what is a resolution of yours this year that is founded *solely* on something you learned - either in general or about yourself in 2016? fwiw, I've got some things floating around in my head for impending changes. just curious what drivers there might be for some of what pushes y'all

I'm not going for the year. My goal for next week is to do at least 4 yoga classes and start to detox off all shit food I've been eating.
Also to plan with daughter the rest of her school year and finish end year taxes.

I'm going to be kinder to myself. The mean girl who lives in my head is a super bitch and never says anything nice to me.

My resolution is to haven't goals or resolutions.
Every time I make them I get too lofty and end up hating myself for not achieving them.
I'm winging it this year. Maybe that will help with my stress and anxiety.
I can never be like DH and be blindly optimistic but I can stop trying so hard to control the entire universe.

When I get my car I have got to get out there and make new friends. That is one goal.

I don't know if I have any goals that specifically came from 2016 experiences.
I want to be physically healthier. I really started in on that this year and it's been an ongoing process to learn what works for me and what doesn't. I'm getting there.
I want a better work life balance. I've learned over the last couple of years how to be less of a control freak and let other people fail...and document that they didn't follow suggestions or directions. I've also learned how to be a bit more focused at work so I can get stuff done and leave. And not fret about it later. I think about work at work, personal stuff when I'm not at work and try not to let either one distract me when I should be focusing on the other.
I've become more comfortable being selfish and cutting toxic people out of my life. I started eliminating relationships a couple of years ago, and hearing second hand stories of people who still interact with those toxic individuals just reinforces my belief that I made the right decision.
The last year or so I've reverted back to toddlerhood and "No" became a favorite word again. No, your stupid emergency that everyone saw coming isn't my problem. No, I'm not working all weekend because you couldn't get your shit together for a deadline that comes every year and I've been reminding you of for weeks. No, I don't owe you an explanation for not doing what you demand. Just no.

I'm going to lose more weight. I started on this already and have lost some, but I want to keep going. And not a ton. I think maybe another 25-30 pounds. I still want to be curvy, not skinny.
I'm also going to get my financial house back in order. 2016 was a shit show for finances and I've started seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Now I just need to get there.

so - this isn't the standard resolutions thread? Only on something you learned that you are making changes for? Will there be a standard resolution one? Not sure how to respond.

I worked hard last year to be more patient with my DH. I love him to death, but he frustrates me easily. He's so Type B and doesn't understand the stress I put on myself with my over the top type A personality. And I lose patience with him most often b/c well, he's there most often. It's not fair to him, so for 2017 I'm going to continue to work on that.
Also, I've taken on some new bills recently, so I'm trying to cut back discretionary spending. I know I spent way too much in 2016, so 2017 I'd like to reign it in a bit. Im not in a black hole of debt, but I could get there rather easily, so I'm going to watch that this year.

Not sure how to respond. this is what I felt like asking last night, in the middle of still more soul searching about how I landed where I seem to be. what's your standard resolution? Standard resolutions usually revolve around several large umbrella topics Family health finance career household garden social Usually to/very generally: Family - more time, more fun, etc. health - eat better, exercise more, dr/dentist visits, etc. finance - save money, spend wisely career - advancements via education, research, etc. Job searches if I'm game, skills acquisitions, also fit here. household - repairs, upgrades, maintenance, etc. garden - more veggies, more flowers, redesigns, better maintenance, etc. etc. social - more get togethers, more events, etc. I generally break life into these large topical areas, think about big picture goals (5-10 year timeframes) and pick a few steps for the current year. Also smaller goals that may not tie into the bigger ones. One smaller goal success last year was no-matter-what - I was going to floss each and every day - and I did it! not one skip! One larger one that was on the list for a loooooooooooooong time was the phd. Took about 10 years to get the motivation and other aspects in place and apply. Drama had mentioned not setting oneself up for failure, and one of my relatives mentioned recently how they hate new year's resolution because of the sense of failure by mid-year - but I love them! It's a big help in identifying what is important. Like the phd for me. Some years, it wasn't on the list because it wasn't practical or was crowded out by other more pressing things. Sometimes something comes up a few years then fades away for good. But if it keeps coming back to the list, then it is important and needs some attention to either pursue, accomplish, or find a way to let it go. I always fail at something, sometimes everything. But each new year is a magical reboot. You can try again - or replace with other things that are more pressing or important.

IMO, as long as the not-too-serious ones continue, some serious ones are quite OK too!

I don't write down resolutions, but in general, I try to be kinder to people each year. I can be very snarky, but I am not confrontational at all since I belong to the walk away club especially when DH ticks me off. I remind myself that I am very lucky to be married to someone I love and respect.
Like every year, I will continue to work on preparing healthy meals but refuse to be the food police with DH. I exercise every day, but currently I am still limited because of my shoulder pain. Maintain my current weight through exercise and healthy food choices.
The one goal that needs encouragement is being more social. I am frustrated because although most of our friends and neighbors are retired and their children are independent, they have trouble committing to making plans to get together.
Continue to save money and make wise decisions about large purchases.

It's unanimous NNP, no serious posts from you! Whew. I am released from my resolve. And it's still only 2016. I wasn't looking forward to having my hands in cast down to my fingernails for a whole year. Thank you CL Of course I might have been able to keyboard with my toes.

If things go right-and they should! - then by spring I'll have my business physical location separated from our residence. We are about to purchase a piece of land that would be more than enough in size for the purpose. Good location, great exposure, along a local highway with plenty of traffic and easy access to major highways. I foresee my business taking off within 2017 at a higher pace. It might not be all good since I prefer smaller things that are easier to control that I can be on top of at all times. I'm very finicky about the way work is done on my job site.

To embrace the fact that I am a stress junkie and learn how to use it effectively. To create positive partitions between different facets of my life so I can grow in a healthy way in all of them. To remember that every seemingly impossible challenge of 2016 brought me so many gifts of newfound knowledge and incredible new relationships. And, of course, to lose 20 pounds and look amazing!!!!!! Happy 2017 peeps

I am going to drink more beer, play more video games and call into work a couple times when I'm not sick. I'm also going to take my dog more places because he is 9 and in good health which can't last forever.

I am suppose to be losing weight and getting ready to do a Mud Run in the summer. I actually joined a gym and started this journey in November, but kind didn't do much towards it in December.

Well it is a 2 mile race, with mud and things you have to like climb over, and go under..... Long story short I have unofficially adopted a teenager. He is here several weekends a month and came down Christmas day and is staying till Sunday or Monday. Working on getting him graduated from high school hopefully at the end of January and then onto life. He is a great kid, but there is a lot going on. Over all in October he asked me if I would do the Mud run with him since and also get healthier. So here I go. It does look like fun but I am so not in shape......

This is the one that kind of started this whole thing www.raceluraypage.com/ The original goal was to try and find something he could do with his dad to help build that relationship. He got shot down with both of his parents in doing it with him so then he asked if I would do it next year for him. Over all he wants me to lose about 50-60 pounds in 7 to 8 months. Even typing that makes me want to cry.
