I am (once again) trying to cut back my Diet Pepsi consumption. I have been unsuccessful in all previous year's attempts, but this year I'm tackling it from an angle that I'm good at...financial. I made "Pop" a line item in YNAB and am only giving myself $20/month and have committed to being honest in recording. $20/month might seem like a lot, but trust me, I don't think that covers half of what I would normally spend. I don't even know. As anal as I am about tracking every dime I would hide that in groceries or fun money, so I don't really know. I wasn't even caring what I spent anymore, if I needed pop I bought it wherever I was. Last night I was out and researched first since I only had $20. It was cheapest at Target, then I was all excited because I found 10% off on Cartwheel and got another 5% with the Red Card. Hopefully this helps me cut down and doesn't just get me to become a "Super Soda Shopper" that can get a van load for $20! I only brought one to work today instead of two. That's something. Let me know how that works for you - one Diet Pepsi drinker to another!! But since I no longer buy them to take to work, I latched on to a few 2 liter bottles for .89 cents but I too am trying to cut back .

I am getting (relatively minor) hip surgery next month so my goal for the year is to be able to run my favorite 10k in November. I miss running, it feels like a big part of me has been taken away. Also sucks that I spent last year spectating and cheering on my husband at all his marathons and triathlons. I mean, great job and all, but total jealousy for me.

My left hip has been giving me fits the last couple of years so I changed up my routine and now do the elliptical, body combat and pilates. On Monday I did the elliptical and my stupid hip hurt for 2 days . I really hope it isn't going to start hurting with the elliptical now also. I never had any problems until I tore a glute muscle. It makes me wonder if the hip problem isn't really coming from the glute? Anyway, what are you having done?

In June of 2016, our family crisis happened, and it felt like my entire life just spun completely out of control. And I let it. I let everything go out of control. The biggest problem there being I am kind of a control freak. Making plans is one of my coping mechanisms. So letting everything go out of control just really upped my stress levels, but my stress was so high, I didn't quite realize... One of those spirals. Finally December hit, and I realized that I wasn't going to be able to completely pay off both the credit cards we use - for the first time in like 5 years. And that kind brought things home to me.
My goal is to start taking back control of the things I can control. I have to accept that there are still plenty of things in my life that I can't control, but that doesn't mean I can't control anything. So, I am back on the NS/CS board to get my spending back under control. I am back on WIRS to start saving again - only $40/month, but it's still something. My hope is that I will be able to build on this, kind of like the monthly goals someone else mentioned. As I get more comfortable getting my spending under control (dropping from 5 starbucks a week to 2-3) and saving again, I can start look at getting back in the habit of walking - maybe not 2x/day like I was before (I also developed plantar fasciitis last spring), but at least 1x/day, leave my office and walk around campus.
So yeah, hoping that by taking control of the things I can control, it will also help reduce my stress over things I can't control.

2016 sucked the lifeblood right outta me, my mind and energy were so scattered. 2015 was awesomesocks cause I took control in saving some money, but that control went right out the door on January 1, 2016 and stayed away for a good 11 months.
2017 I'm getting my shit back, but not like 2015, I'm going forward into an unknown, but I'm excited.
2016 was about treading water, 2017 is about learning to fly and trusting the unknown.

That sounds like exactly what my DH got surgery for in October! He's got more problems, though. How was his surgery? How is he doing now? The surgery wasn't too bad. It was outpatient. A little difficult walking him into the house afterward, but he was up and about the next day. On crutches for several weeks. Only a couple small incisions to heal. He only took pain meds that first day, as they made him nauseous. I guess it only fixed part of the problem, or he had too much scar tissue, or an entrapped nerve, or something else I can't remember that he found on the internet. He's got more pain in a different spot now, and dealing with the insurance to approve something to help relieve it has been a pita. He's getting (I think) a cortisone injection on the 23rd. After that he thinks he'll have enough relief to do more PT. He's been doing PT forever, but some different stuff, I guess? Anyway, I wouldn't worry from this, as it seems like there was more than one issue for him--probably because he let it go on way too long.

My goal is to let go of expectations and judgments, specifically with family. I have tiny little ears at home that will be absorbing everything I say and I don't want to be coloring his opinions with my negativity. Figure it'll be good for me too if I quit taking everything so personally,
My other goal is to cook more, be an adultier adult.

2015 was the worst year of my life, 2016 was better but with hubby and I adjusting to each other and now DD back home, its ok, just wasn't the plan. But she is still doing great and her behavior person and case manager both agree we are going to try and ease her into programs with her peers and try to get her in the community without ME at times. It looks like a good plan, then respite sometimes, but that's later. She is terrified she has to go back.
I am very leery of the new pres. When I get back from this trip, I am taking inventory and stocking up on everything, not in the freezers though, but want months worth stocked back. Also thinking of taking some cash out and we have a place to secret it away, we are both feeling very unsure this year. Some places think this could be worse then 2008. Told hubby he needs to build an inventory of all kinds of oils and filters, to bad we don't have large tanks for gas and diesel think the prices of everything is going to explode with the tweeting president coming in. Seems whatever pops into his brain he tweets, this can't go over well with foreign leaders some of which are very unstable also. Unless he modifies his actions this is not going to end well.

I've been trying to check my attitude about family stuff. Definitely still a work in progress. Cooking is also a mixed bag. I've added some recipes, and did more meal planning, still ate out too much. Pregnancy definitely kills my motivation to cook.

I feel even worse about the countries future then last year. The pres is a dumb shit and hurting all of us badly. Have stuff stocked but not near enough for any long term issues. Maybe a couple of months for some, longer for others, 50 pounds of wheat, 25 pounds of rice, 20 pounds of sugar, canned goods, lots in the freezers, but still just a few months at the longest.
2017 wasn't bad, kids are home, the new rent house just has a couple of things for hubs to tweek and I'm waiting on curtains I ordered, its on the market.
Kids should be settling in their new house in the next couple of weeks so that is good. I'm so relieved to have them home.
I should follow MPL's direction and stop the sodas, its a stupid habit and if I quit DD has to quit. I do hope to get back to exercising again at the center. My goal is to stop spending so much, once the kids are gone I can do that. Just spent to much with Christmas and all, I can do better and will. Plan to paint inside of house this year, maybe get new floor coverings. Not sure if I will plant a garden this year or not but still plan to can even if I have to buy the stuff. And see about my foot, see if something can be done for it. If they do I will likely be out of commission for a lot of the summer.

Usually to/very generally: Family - more time, more fun, etc. health - eat better, exercise more, dr/dentist visits, etc. finance - save money, spend wisely career - advancements via education, research, etc. Job searcheshousehold - repairs, upgrades, maintenance, etc. garden - more veggies, more flowers, redesigns, better maintenance, etc. etc. social - more get togethers, more events, etc.
I always fail at something, sometimes everything. But each new year is a magical reboot. You can try again - or replace with other things that are more pressing or important. Thanks for retrieving this Chloe! I guess I was very similar last year! But more general, nonspecific, so a bit difficult to assess how I did. I crossed out what I felt I did good enough to consider completed, and italicized where I made progress, but didn't deserve a cross out. 2017 was the first year in a long time I made it to two dentist cleanings. And they are free with the insurance! Want to repeat that in 2018. Forgot about the garden in 2018.....hmmmm - will need to add something.

I think the only one I have ever kept, and it goes back 5 or 6 years is that I stopped swearing and overall I've succeed even to today. In fact, potty mouth speech really bothers me.

I am contemplating retiring in June of 2019. Although that doesn't seem part of setting goals, etc. for 2018, it is because of the way calendar years are set up for teachers. There are a lot of issues like the FSA account that need to be worked through during 2018. Ditto for a Medicare supplement. The state's retiree insurance is basically an Advantage plan, and I'm not sure that would work for DH. And then there are tax issues.
So my goal is to start doing some realistic planning involving Social Security (I would only be 65), insurance, budgeting, etc. so that I can make a good decision. June of 2020 may be the better choice.
Non-personal goals include decluttering. I need to become ruthless, but it is hard. Just today, DH asked about some wine stoppers that my sister had given us several years ago. We hadn't used them in 3 or 4 years, but he bought wine for NYE and wanted to use them. He was very disappointed that I had donated them.

I'm going to have to sit down later and review what I wrote a year ago. 2017 really wasn't a good year for me for a number of reasons, some within my control, others not. but I survived, and I've got goals for this new year as well. will post again later tonight

Oh I need to stop with the Diet Coke too. I get free beverages at work so started letting myself have one and now that is 2-3 every day in the office and I started buying them for home 😕. But DB drinks Pepsi and keeps some at my place. I can resist usually. I broke the daily consumption last week when I wasn’t at work, but I’ll be tempted when I go back in today. I’m limiting myself to one a day for the time being.
