The results kinda blow the lid off the "Donald Trump is a legitimate candidate" argument. If you think this forum is any way representative of the American populace you are seriously mistaken. This forum is so left leaning it makes the Huffington post look like a conservative news source . I'm actually surprised Trump got the amount of votes he did! No, I don't think this board is representative of the American populace. There is a much smaller proportion of "deplorables" here. We are also as a rule more knowledgeable about politics and current events than the average person. While the division along left/right is a lot closer than you think, the ratio of hard-right to moderate-right is likely less than the general population. Many of those moderate-right recognize who and what Donald Trump is, and they will not vote for him. The overwhelming support for Clinton on this vote here is due to the independents and the center-right not being willing to jump off a cliff.

I agree that the majority of the foks who post here are kind of live and let live types...kind of like their fellows, are very tolerant of others and their views..support the right to have views other then their own so probably lean more left then right but with all that said...you, who I have always enjoyed your posts, your life experiences, service in protecting the country and mine, have to ask..after listening to this guys words..Donalds..and his thoughts and ideas and his treatment of others..you actually would want him in that oval office as POTUS?? You don't believe he is a sleeze? You would be fine having him in your home..with your wife..daughter, sister..Mom? i

If I can take a stab at that, it is because there is very little intellectual integrity left in today's incarnation of the GOP. The only thing that matters for most is that he is not a Democrat. That he is not a true conservative, that he is not Christian, that he is not honest, that he is not honorable, that he appeals to the worst of society, that he has ties to people and countries hostile to us, and that he holds in utter disdain the concepts of equal rights and the value of democracy matters not a whit. He's not a Democrat, so we'll give him a pass on the rest. ?I am thinking that you were trying to be facitiouse but realize there is so much truth to your statement and by the likes you are getting , so many are agreeing with your post..made as a joke or not...when u think this is what we have come down to...........................................please excuse but I am going to be sick Actually, and sorry to say, it was not facetious at all. The Republican Party has been hijacked by those making a mad dash for the right. The moderate voices have been for the most part forced out of the party, and it is that which will cause their downfall as a political force. Demographics are moving against them, and society is evolving away from them. If they don't get back to their roots, they will marginalize themselves out of existence.

I agree with u and feel it started with the rise of the "tea party"..also the moral majority, the religiouse right.. As u know , I see myself as middle to the left in feelings but don't think I relish this problem of the GOP..I know without a strong second party..I wouldn't trust my favored party to all ways be the smart one..the country needs differences and the ability to have all sides heard and acted on ..

Yes it does.
My preference would be for the Democrats to sit at about the 30-35 range on the spectrum, while the Republicans sit at about 65-70. Leave enough room on the extremes for two others. Call it the Progressives or Democratic Socialists (or whatever) at about 10 and the Social Conservatives (or whatever) at 90. Or slide the D's and R's out five more points and have an actual Centrist Party as well. The days of two major parties trying to be too many things and not doing any of them particularly well leaves us with...this.

Something I've never understood about Trump supporters..I get that people want someone who isn't a career politician. But his behavior is so reprehensible! Making fun of handicapped and women. The misogyny, the racism, the list goes on and on. How are (general) you "ok with" this shit? How are (general) you able to justify him treating people as less than human? He has no morals whatsoever, in my opinion. How can he POSSIBLY be good for this country? Are you really willing to overlook all of that, as well as the very good possibility of him getting us into some serious crap by not thinking before he speaks, just to have a 'non politician' in office? It's seriously mind boggling. Really. I can't understand how anyone who considers themselves a good person can want to elect this man president. They could be looking at it as a "lesser of two evils" situation. and liking him because he's NOT her. Sure Hillary is none or what Trump is... well... except a proven liar (but aren't all politicians liars?). But she is many things that trump isn't: a security risk, a perjurer, someone that will continue Obama's programs, and worst off (if you are religious) someone that wants to get religion out of government (one of two things I actually like about her, truth be told).

The numbers would be a description of where each group would fit on the left/right scale.

Incomprehensible how you think you haven't bought into the right-wing bull**** . Probably because I haven't? I guess that thought escaped you. All of what I have posted is provable with actual proof. I don't buy into her hit lists, nor do I buy into her being of poor/failing health, nor do I buy into anything that actually IS bull****. What I do "buy into" however is things that have proof. I'm sorry if you don't buy into things that have proof (but it does explain your bias against Trump... if you don't believe the provable, then it's easier to accept that you believe in the unproven)

Actually, they've adopted the nickname. I've seen some who are quite proud of it, even putting it on T-shirts. But it was placed in quotation marks here specifically to reference Clinton's use of the term because it clarifies the distinction between them and the Republicans who have repudiated the Trump candidacy.

I keep adding up the numbers to the right of each bar forgetting the total voted is right below them.

Oh for Pete's sake. While the 57% of votes that Clinton has received on this board is a majority, it is hardly overwhelming enough to warrant the "oh woe is me, poor outnumbered conservative" persecution complex pity party that is being evidenced by the conservatives on this thread, and the board in general lately.

Yep. This is particularly true in this election because it's so contentious. High rhetoric on both sides has been very polarizing. That's resulted in a lot of people voting against a candidate rather than for a candidate - even more so than in previous elections. The vote this year, IMO, will be less indicative of the individual voter's preference on issues and more indicative of that individual's opinion regarding the candidates presented by the two major parties.

... the candidates presented by the two major parties. IM(not so)HO, it is more accurate to call them the candidates selected by primary voters.

I find it rather quirky that Conservatives are more for " me " than " we ", and yet they tend to attach themselves more to a religion that promotes more " we " than " me ".

Interestingly if you take that line and bend it into a circle, the extremes at either end, left or right, will give you a totalitarian governmental system

Methink I misunderstood what your definition of a spectrum is..I was thinking u were asking for the pubs to be in power say 65/70 % of the time and Dems the difference with some % given over to other groups...and my feeling the exact opposite as to which party being in power for what % of time....thinking both of us felt the same , to have either part in power to long over the other is not really a healthy thing to have happen...

I wrote in Bernie Sanders, having changed my mind. Jill got my vote in 2012 so I had to mix it up.
And to sort of answer zibi from an earlier post, although she won't see this, in Washington state all write-ins are totaled but not by individual name, only as 'write ins'. I doubt Bernie will know how many he got here.

I live in a very red state (Indiana), so I know a lot of people who are voting for Trump. I don't talk to many of them about it, but I have heard a few things. One man is basically a one issue voter, and his one issue is the 2nd amendment. He thinks Hillary is going to take his guns away and so he just "can't" vote for her. He hates the racist part of Trump, but not enough to not vote for him.
Others are basically always going to vote for the Republican because they see that as the correct pro-life thing to do.
Some are convinced that Hillary belongs in jail and want no part of putting a criminal in the oval office. I'm sure there are other reasons, but those are just a few that I've heard and I'm sure the people I've heard it from consider themselves to be good people.

It's seriously mind boggling. Really. I can't understand how anyone who considers themselves a good person can want to elect this man president. I can only speak for myself, but I'll answer as to my reasons. Normally an election like this would be a no-brainer, I'd just vote libertarian. Unfortunately their candidate is uhhh....I'm trying to be nice...I'll just say "not as knowledgeable about world events as a potential president should be." So basically I put aside ethics and values since both major candidates are such turds - and yes they are. You listed trump's shortcomings but didn't mention Hillary's, and they are just as plentiful and damaging to our country. I could very easily change about 5 words in your paragraph and it could be talking about Hillary just as much as Donald. In a situation like this you have to go with the issues - and normally ethics and morals is a big part of my vote so that was a tough decision - but the fact is I agree with him much more than her, so he gets the vote. Ratchets, thank you for this. You took the words out of my mouth. In the (few) weeks I've been watching the PB politics board, I've posted several times Trump's opponent's shortcomings and outright lies. Similar to RL, it's like talking to a wall. Actually, I take that back, at least in RL, my Democrat friends, including my best friend, are at least willing to consider other opinions and points of views. Frankly, I take offense to the insinuation of not being a good person for voting for Trump. #Trump2016

I just don't get the 'pro-life' argument that at every turn supports policy most likely to increase the factors that correlate with likelihood to choose abortion... But yeah, lots of 'vote for the unborn, that's my bottom line' voters here...

DH and I are mid-50s, registered Republicans. We started out as #neverTrump people who didn't know what to do. Even considered not voting. After watching every minute of the debates, a light bulb went on for me and DH has agreed...#wearewithHer. Gained a lot of respect for how she has handled him in this election and I made myself read more about her. We both cannot talk politics where we work and we are also in a very RED area in PA. Trump signs are everywhere. We know quite a few people who will do what we are doing and vote a straight blue ticket. I just hope people like me get out and vote. I wonder if you're not around my area - SW PA. Lots of coal mines, lots of Trump signs.
