DH is turning 60, and we are having a big party here at home for him.
It is customary here for people to chip in for a communal gift. DH wants a replica of the Eames lounge chair and footrest. (The "approved copies" are about 7K, and unaffordable, so we're looking at a replica.)
IMO that is probably the ugliest piece of furniture I have ever seen in my entire life. I know it's a genius of design, yada yada yada. I don't care, to me it's ugly, it doesn't match, and I don't want it.
My first thought was to turn the downstairs master bedroom into an "office" and hide put it there, but we have done / are doing a lot of work in the house and there is no money to redo that room now. Plus, unfortunately, DH really does want it in the LR, he says it would be his pride and joy. And, he just paid for the LR/DR redo.
The idea of putting that butt-ugly object in my LR is absolutely killing me, but, DH has wanted it for literally decades. He has NEVER wanted a BD party before, but suddenly, he is all about celebrating the fact that he survived his bike accident of 5.5 years ago. He has invited people I have literally never even heard of, let alone met, despite the fact that we have been together for 25 years. That was a source of argument too, but not nearly as much as that horrific chair.
At this point he is saying crap like I WILL HAVE THAT CHAIR BEFORE I DIE EVEN IF IT'S IN MY NURSING HOME.
I just CANNOT get a compromise from him about this, it's his way (that ugly chair in the LR) or the highway. I tried to get him to compromise on ecru leather (since we have ecru leather couches in the LR), no way.
That chair is SO BEYOND UGLY to me, the highway has suddenly become very tempting.
Thoughts? Do I bit the bullet and get him a (replica, gag) Eames chair because he really really really wants one? Even if it's the ugliest piece of furniture I have ever laid eyes on in my entire life?

DH has one. It's appraised at about half that. Good to know.

Where, Zib? I'm guessing in his office, and not in the LR!

DH loved that chair as did his father. Maybe it's a guy thing? Although his former stepdaughter wants it. So it must be valuable if any of them want it.

I know it is very comfortable if you are in a certain size range (which DH is in).

I want to make my DH happy but I just can't bear the thought of having that ruining in the LR. I keep trying to purchase it because I do love my DH. But every time I try, my index finger suddenly gets paralysed and I. just. can't. do. it. Does anybody else besides Zib have one? If so, can you please try to convince me to pull the trigger?

Debt-is there a corner in the LR when the chair could be placed and call it DH's Corner?

I considered that but nope I told DH that too ... look, in every photo, that butt ugly chair is in some sort of corner, but in our LR, it wouldn't be. I even said, so that means nobody actually puts in IN their LR!

I'm probably going to pull the trigger.
I see an unhappy emojI but not a crying sobbing one.
i was hoping you might make me feel better about it. Not likely, I KNOW. It's horrific, the stuff that nightmares are made of.
And it's going to be in my LR, WAAHHHHHHH!

I'm going to bring it up again Tenn. IMO he's acting like a spoiled child. I WANT THAT CHAIR IN MY LR, WAAAHHHHH!
The obvious compromise would be, get your butt-ugly chair, but put it somewhere else FFS.
I've been trying that for a month but I'll keep trying.

I guess you have to ask yourself if this is worth fighting over.

That's what I'm asking myself. We're not even fighting anymore, there's no point. DH really wants it, he knows I think it's beyond hideous.
But, he nearly died 5.5 years ago, I didn't, so apparently that gives him carte blanche to trash our LR with that monstrosity.
I was actually hoping some people might chime in about how much they love that chair.
As most of you know, I'm extremely "live and let live". But I think that item is particularly horrific, and I really don't want it in my house, let alone my LR. I've been trying hard to find a compromise but DH won't play.
Because it means so much to DH, I'm probably going to order it anyway. But I think it SUCKS. I'm all about compromise, but I do NOT do well with one person imposing their choices on the other.
I guess that means I'm willing to order it, but I'm not (yet?) willing to order it happily.
So he gets to play Gd in our LR because he nearly died, and I didn't?

Rent him a pied-à-terre in the city for his chair?

Look at it this way, debthaven......if he is always sitting in the chair, he'll be hiding it and you won't see it. Maybe he'll sleep in the chair too!

Mich believe it or not, I HAD actually thought of that LOL! It's been a lifelong dream of his (Gd knows why) so I'll probably do it. But it sucks.

How about a compromise that he gets to have the chair in the living room for a year, then it goes in another room for a year. That way, he gets to enjoy the chair in the living room for awhile, then you get to put it out of sight, hopefully forever. Hopefully after 2 years, the novelty has worn off and he realizes that he can enjoy the chair, even if it's not in the living room.

The obvious compromise would be, get your butt-ugly chair, but put it somewhere else FFS. I've been trying that for a month but I'll keep trying. I honestly think if that chair is sitting in my LR I would just hang myself from the rafters. At which point DH would sell the house and move back into Paris. If he did, he wouldn't have enough room for it anyway. Get him the chair and put it in the LR. Then move it somewhere further from sight until it's in one of the extra bedrooms in his NEWWWW DEN/OFFICE! <<said in my best Bob Barker voice>> Honestly - I've seen way uglier chairs than that so let him have his chair. And buy a nice, great big throw for it until you can move it elsewhere one day. ETA: Oops - Adela beat me to it. Adela - You are a genius!

Hey it's the chair from the show Frasier!!! Personally if it's something he has wanted that long I would bite the bullet and go for it. Even if it's a knockoff, maybe it can go in a mancave at some point. I look at it this way, if it is something DH wanted for so long and has worked hard for our family he has earned it (as long as it's affordable). I hope you guys can come to a good compromise
