See debthaven, it could always be worse. A lot worse. Your DH could have taken an art class and MADE something horrible like the fat guy skin chair. Think of him proudly dragging it home and exclaiming "look what I made!" It would be in your living room, in a place of honor, lurking... forever.
Until it killed you and then at least you'd be put out of your misery. So that's OK then.

Chloe, is a great room the same as a LR? Or it is like what we used to call a den?
Because I would be totally fine with having it anywhere else in the house, I would have just preferred not to have it in our LR, although at this point I've accepted that I'm going to have it there anyway, because I love DH.

Well, it's the first thing you see when you walk in our front door. I would say our living room is a different room. The center of our house is completely open. The front door is smack in the middle of the width of the house. The center of the floor plan is our dining room, kitchen, wood stove, and tv area with no interior walls at all.

Also Milee, DH is actually an artist / industrial designer who reincarnated himself as a graphic designer. So anything he made would be much more attractive than either hideous chair LOL.

So you would like to think.... But as the now infamous Eames Chair Incident has proven, you just never know what crazy thing your spouse is going to love.

Thanks everybody for helping me to put things in perspective. Well, almost everybody. No thanks to those who posted nasty comments or the rude and wrong ASSumptions that I am some sort of interior design Nazi.
If I bothered to post about this, it's because it was literally the first time in 25 years together that we were at polar opposites about something. Perhaps we've been blessed until now, but we really do generally have the same taste, so we have never before had any major disagreement about anything related to the house. And since DH has an artistic background, and I trust him, when I'm in doubt, I defer to him. This time, I had no doubt, and as Quince pointed out, there was no possible compromise. Either we get the chair, or we don't.
ETA: We had one minor disagreement about a piece of art a prominent artist friend of DH's did, and a bunch of mutual friends gave us for our wedding 12 years ago. I said I really didn't want that up on ANY wall. DH agreed he didn't either but because of who did it / gave it to us, he felt it should be up somewhere, but he didn't like it either. For the first few years we kept it in the basement and only brought it up when one of the people involved came over. After a while it got too tiring to keep remembering to do that, so DH had a stroke of genius ... now it's up permanently, in our half-bathroom.

Miles, I always knew that DH wanted an Eames chair. But it was always clear that it was totally unaffordable, so I never bothered to find out what it was. When DH recently decided that we'd never be able to afford an "official" one, and that he wanted a replica instead, I finally googled it.

Kind of like how someone's wife always knew he had a love of designing interesting art piece furniture but never knew that his latest design involved skinning one of the neighbors...

Remember Silence of the Lambs? The talk about that weird chair has reminded me that we need 2 new lampshades because the colour has totally faded from the 20+ year old ones.

When DH recently decided that we'd never be able to afford an "official" one, and that he wanted a replica instead, I finally googled it. Well you could get one made by Ikea and it will fall apart in about 6 years. Then don't replace it.
We have a knock-off that was my mother's. It was her favorite chair and she got it at a back store shop so I guess they are designed with that in mind. But it's not made with real leather and the "pleather" is starting to shed off.
I actually like it but I'm partial to the mid-century look. 4 of our 5 properties were built between 1959-1964 and we have several pieces of furniture from that time too.
Good for you for sucking it up. Your DH's happiness is worth more than any décor. And best of all now you've got a great story to talk about at cocktail hour!

Update ... I ordered the chair today. I've been in touch with the shop to be sure it was still in stock. They suggested ordering it today or tomorrow so it would get here in time for DH's birthday.

UPDATE The chair arrived Wed, 2-3 days too early. I got an email from the seller (a big store in the UK) that I absolutely had to check out the chair to make sure it arrived undamaged, and the delivery person would wait, because if it was damaged, and I didn't mention the damage on the delivery slip upon delivery, I would not be entitled to repairs / replacement. I emailed back saying I teach most days, what if I'm not home?! They answered, they won't deliver unless you are home, because you absolutely have to check out the chair to make it sure it arrives undamaged, yada yada yada. At that point I told DH (who makes his own hours), guess what, you will have to be home to take delivery of your present to make sure it arrives undamaged, because you are much more finicky than me about most things, and you know what you should be looking for. BY MIRACLE, the chair arrived the only morning we were both at home. It arrived in an ENORMOUS WOODEN PALLET. If I had been alone, I don't know how I would have dismantled the pallet on my own. It took DH nearly 15 minutes to dismantle the pallet and another 10 minutes to check out the contents. So long story short, the chair arrived, and it was undamaged. I then put a spell on DH to make him forget about his BD gift until his party tomorrow, and covered it with a throw. He is not allowed to sit on it until his birthday, and nobody else is allowed to sit on it until after he does. It's too big to gift wrap but I'll get a big ribbon tomorrow to wrap it up with, over the throw. I had planned (and would have preferred) to bring the boxes out on his birthday, but given the seller's stipulation about the damage, I had no choice. Tonight our cleaner picked up the old chair that this chair is replacing. I still think it is ugly as sin but DH was so excited to see it, it made it worthwhile. I'm very happy for him. Hopefully I'll get used to it.

I'm glad the chair arrived OK. To cheer you up, perhaps Moon or Virgil can post different colors of the scary chair to cheer you up. Personally, I think stuffed clown costume would be a classic.
Hope the party goes well.

Thanks Opti! I'm happy for him, he's a good man, he really wanted it, he deserves it. IF when we redo the downstairs Master he wants to turn it into a mancave / music room and put his chair there, I might consider it. Thanks again to those who encouraged me to get the chair even though I dislike it (immensely). I'm glad I did.

Buy a very large, full silk tree (you don't want a real tree losing leaves and revealing the horror). Put said tree in front of the horror. Then, cover what's left peeping out with a colorful throw. Living rooms need greenery to come alive. Yasss.

After I ordered it (because it wasn't a surprise, it was a demand (very strongly worded) request DH said, I really want it in the LR. But once it's here, if you still really hate it, when we redo the downstairs Master, I'll put it there.
I'm good with that. And frankly, I'm planning to keep it in the LR.

Final update ... the party was Sat night. It went fantastically well! But it was exhausting ... 84 guests, and 7 house guests (DH's closest cousins). The house was a total mess. It is finally all put back together again, except for some glasses and music equipment that need returning. But everybody was very happy! DH is absolutely thrilled with his Eames chair! I'm SO happy I relented and got it for him. Although I still don't love it, it doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. It replaced an old fabric chair that our cleaner was happy to take, so we were glad to see that chair go to a good home. All's well that end's well.
