I need a new job.... how can I transfer to a hospital or university ? Really like my wife job 10% retirement contribution. if you want regular business hours/days, a hospital isn't for you.

You can work at a university but in exchange for the 10% match you will get a low salary, no promotions, no bonuses and your raises will not be determined by your performance it will be determined by bean counters in the state offices that set the entire state budget for the DC area. You will be lucky to get 3% raises, most likely it will be 0-1%.
This applies to ANYONE working in the university not just people working in a lab.
So if you like being stuck in the same position for forever, working your ass off for absolutely zero reward and dealing with an ever shrinking staff and budget then working in a university is for you!
Grass ain't any greener on this side of the fence.

If you are ambitious, want upwards mobility, yet hate the workplace politics navigation, a university or hospital is REALLY the last place you should be looking at. Those employers are notorious for stagnation and low raises.

For wanting to hire someone right away they sure are taking a long time to decide. It'll have been a month since I interviewed next week.

I only just heard back from C+D last week - obviously a rejection call. The interview was just about a month ago. I figure if you're gonna get the job, you'll hear back in about 1-1.5 weeks.

what sucks is that there are definitely good jobs I can do at my former employer, but the majority of them are in NYC. That's a big fat HELL. NO.

No bonuses, poor raises, regular hiring freezes, major league bureaucracy, grief about being a state employee and sucking at the public tit. If you happen to be on soft money (i.e. grant funding), when the federal government, or contract you are on is up, your job is gone. Oh, and your salary is going to be easily 10% less than what you currently earn.

So the past 3 weeks I have work 6 days a week on average 12 hrs day (sometimes 14-16) and the next 3 weeks same.
My new boss is in India for the next 2-3 weeks (family issues ), my co-worker just took a personal leave of absence because she lost her brother in law, she is having health issues and so is her husband (been in and out the hospital).
So it was just me left in the store and other co's they are sending to help out from other stores...
I felt it was safer to postpone starting school till spring. I hate I had to do it but don't want to start it on a bad note and failing.

I have job reviews every year but it doesn't mean shit. If the state says "No raises" then I don't get a raise. If the state says "You can have a 1% raise" it doesn't matter if I singe handed created Mighty Mouse I am only getting 1%. For me to change titles my boss has to "fire" me, eliminate my position, post my job with the new title, have me reapply, interview X number of internal candidates (and external if they don't exploit a loophole where youc an label it "internal only) and then hire me back. Which can take MONTHS and there is always the risk that you might not make it thru HR the second time around. It happened to a friend of mine and it took four months before her PI could get her rehired. She wasn't getting paid during all this. Since it's a big risk and big time suck most departments are not willing to do it unless there is a real need for that person to take on a new title. They certainly aren't going to do it because you feel you deserve a raise/promotion. Whatever you are hired at, you are stuck at. You'll get more and more piled on you but you will never get a title or salary that reflects that. Sounds like a blast all for 10% match in retirement huh? Private universities are often even worse. Especially in the bullshit department. I would rather work at McD's than go back to Creighton.

You'll get more and more piled on you but you will never get a title or salary that reflects that. Sounds like a blast all for 10% match in retirement huh? My boss actually did jump though these hoops for me, however I was the highest producer in the lab and had been running the lab as well as completing requirements for the doctoral program. Luckily, my transition between appointments was seamless, but there was always the biggest fear that some sort of bureaucracy was going to screw up somewhere. It was a buttload of work on my boss's part, but at that point I had been with him over 20 years and he wanted to keep me around. And Drama is right, you are continually being piled upon and as things need to be done, they get dumped on you. Oh, and during our lab move and when I was the only person in the lab, I was working 12+ hours/day and I was the person on call when a beeper went off. We had 3 x -80° freezers, 2 incubators and 2 anaerobic chambers that CONSTANTLY had beepers going off, and while incubators and chambers have an affinity for running out of gas during the weekend, freezers seemed to go down at 4 pm on a Friday afternoon - which meant I had to go looking for freezer space in other labs (which are largely empty). Even when I had to go back into work to finish up an experiment at 2 am, I still liked doing it. It sucked, but the thrill I got when something went perfect was worth more than anything. ETA: I also had yearly job reviews. I would get 5's across the board until they told my boss that I could not get them. The definition of a 5 was 'meets and exceeds expectations and goes beyond'. I did that regularly, but apparently only if you walked on water could you get a 5. My raises never exceeded 3%, and that was on a good (and rare) year. ETA2: It is very unlikely you would walk into a position making 6 figures unless you have a PhD. This is one place where your experience will not trump your education.

if you want regular business hours/days, a hospital isn't for you. Administration/management staff in the hospital... they still work 9-5 Monday to Friday. I'm admin in my public university. I've been in my job category for 13 years. I've had raises for 3 of them. Furloughs for two (so, we had to cough up like 5ish% of our income) and the rest has been nothing. I was supposed to get a 2% raise this year..but our state still hasn't passed a budget (Budget was due July 1), so I'm not sure what's happening with that. I treat raises, now, like most young people treat SS. It would be nice to have, but I'm not counting on it. I also only get three promotional opportunities. I've used up two. I'm never getting to the third, because I don't do that kind of work. You aren't getting a six-figure salary in management/admin...unless you are walking into something like an assistant Dean position. You don't have enough education/time in the system for that. And I don't work 9-5 M-F. Sometimes, it's a lot more. Before I left for grad school orientation, I logged in close to a 60 hour week, because other people weren't doing their shit on time. I will be taking some comp time for that. But I get no pay. The ONLY reason why we are able to make it is because 1) We don't have large student loans 2) We're OK with a more modest lifestyle and 3) DH's money. Otherwise, we'd be screwed. I don't know how much your wife makes? What 60k? Can you live on a total HH income of 120-140K, tops? Forever? Because that's what you'd be looking at.

The only people I see that are making six figures are directors of departments/chairman.* Carl isn't going to come remotely close to what he's making right now as an admin at a hospital or university. *Professors can but 60% of that six figures has to come from grants they earn. No grants and the university only pays 40% of whatever they were previously making. I don't know how much your wife makes? What 60k? Can you live on a total HH income of 120-140K, tops? Forever? Because that's what you'd be looking at.
You are looking at a MASSIVE downgrade in lifestyle if you want to work as a hospital or university admin. "Management" doesn't make much more. Odds are pretty good actually that you'll come in at a pay grade less than your wife's and stay there unless you want to spend years going back to school for more degrees. Experience doesn't mean shit. The ONLY reason I'm still in academia is because of our health insurance. If DH had ever worked at a company that provided good benefits I would have jumped ship a long time ago.

And to add to the whole "9-5" thing it's not that you wil have this cushy job that can easily be done in 8 hours. It's so universities and hospitals do not have to pay overtime. Your ass is in your seat at EXACTLY 9 am and does not leave it till EXACTLY 5 pm. You will still be expected to do a ton of work, but you aren't getting any extra time to get it done.
Or you will be allowed to work overtime but they will send you home early/have you come in late the next day to even things out. Or will tell you that you can take the time off "someday" which will never come, that happens a lot in labs.

anyone ever work "4th shift" in their career? this particular position is almost entry level, so I'm nixing it straight out of the gate. that, and it's on the other side of Providence, so a longer commute than I have right now. no thanks!
but, it did get me thinking - Sat/Sun/Mon 7a-7p. I have the rest of the week to myself.
how long before I go nuts?

But... not having one weekend day off ever would be tough. Hm. Tough one. Depending on where I was in my career, I would probably have gone for it, especially pre-kids. Having 4 full days off per week would be incredibly awesome.

This allowed her to cover her 40 hours in 3 days and have 4 days off to be with us at home or in her case work another part time job while we were in school and what not (her part time jobs were usually easy: either be with an elderly at their home (basically baby sitting) or a nursing home ). I say easy compared to her shifts at the hospital so not to straining. She seemed to have been ok with it, but my mom is not one to complain: she did what she had to do to feed us. By the way check the savings thread, just asked you a question.

Carl, I work in local gov't. I'm in the IT dept for a fire dept. Prior to this job, I worked for the same local gov't in the library system. I have 24 years in, I think. I'm grandfathered in to the "good" benefits.
Local gov't may have different options but you're still at the whims of budgets. Act 10, passed about 7 years ago, did a number on my local gov't. It destroyed out union, changed the salary playing field and is making it hard to keep new hires. They get a couple years experience and leave for jobs that pay more.

I have a good friend who worked 4th shift before as an ER nurse he had kids and when his kids were young. His wife was basically SAHM who did some work as pastry chef. It allowed him to get all his work in on the weekends and get a higher pay rate, then have all week to spend with his kids. Once kids were school age he shifted to more traditional work schedule.

Dear manager,
Thank you for admitting that you too can find no reference to the GSA for hotel costs in city documentation.
Beth
If the point of this is to make me NOT want to travel for work, they are succeeding.

just got a call from a recruiter I haven't heard from in literally months. She redeemed herself by sending me a opportunity that would be ideal for me. It's a planner position, which will definitely give me some great experience when I go the consulting route. It's in a town 10 miles away, so cutting my commute in half with zero tolls. And the salary is around $70k - so a $13k bump. I'll fill out the info and tweak my resume for it and send it all to her tonight.

Not fiflrju rich but at a point where all our expenses are covered under 1 income. ---> savings 30% now puts us about 70% for expenses/taxes... will Keep chipping at those expenses.

Today was my last day with this agency. I can't even begin to describe the relief of being out of there. It used to be a nice place to work, but the last six months or so have been awful - negative, rigid, and vindictive. It's amazing how a couple people can change the whole environment.

I'm a little sketchy on your back story - I think you have a BA? what are you going to school for? How long will it take/cost before you finish - and what job are you targeting in your post retail career?

I am coming up to a cross roads, and not sure which direction to take - while I'll get a raise/promotion when I finish my phd, it may not be enough to compensate for the student loan payments I'll have . I'm aiming for a minimum of 20k more per year for many reasons - including justification to myself that pursuing the degree was a sound decision!
My current employment options for that 20k extra:
• Stay temporarily and advocate for better raise with promotion (I think they are planning to give me lowest on scale when I've been doing job for 12 years...no.)
o get an extra tuition reimbursement at 1 year post degree (~5k)
o develop rukh, inc on the side only for noncompeting entities (extra $)
o continue to mine data for publications (more justification for more $)
• Get another job offer in Chicago and refocus areas of expertise (not finding anything suitable locally)
• Get another job offer within area of expertise and move
• Attempt to get an academic job and do rukh, inc on the side with no restrictions - likely still moving, may take time to develop rukh, inc. to level of $ to compensate for low pay academic position..but will have the freedom to pursue what I do best, and the academic position would be a huge plus for credibility.
I have a 2/3 year plan on taking myself to the next professional level:
Likely graduating May 2018 (maybe summer term 2018). My goal was to have 5 presentations (combo national and local conferences) and 5 publications by the time I graduated. That is really unlikely to happen!
I have 1 local and 1 national done. I’ve submitted to 2 national conferences for 2018 and will hear before year end if they are accepted. In those cases, the presentations would occur prior to graduation. There is a local conference I will develop something for, and if all 3 are accepted, I’ll have the 5 presentations with 3 national and 2 local. Hopefully all 3 new ones get accepted……
Publications is another story. I may end up with none by then!!!
I have been doing a lot of research with good feedback and developing it for publication. I can’t believe how long it takes!!! So much reworking of it all….over and over and over again! I have one paper I am very close to submitting. I’ve been working on it for 4 years! It's a relatively straightforward piece!! Recently had a convo with a mentor and she mentioned that its can take up to 18 months from initial submission to publication…..yikes! I have 4 other pieces that I’ll be developing (2 which are submitted to 2018 conferences - and on hold till after the conference if accepted) but its going to be a while before I get them to submission standards for publication. On 3 of those, I have a coauthor – so some help but I am first author so the onus is on me. So – I am looking to 2018 to get all these sent out, and to the end of 2019 to know the outcome of those submissions.
Then I would be very competitive for both industry and academic positions. I'm looking for jobs now, but not seeing anything good local - not just posted jobs - but employers that would have a use for my particular expertise. I don't have the wherewithal to move for a job before graduating. I'm thinking of developing some basic materials for ruhk, inc. (website, email, phone number) but not sure if that is the best use of time right at the moment - and money is getting tighter. I've submitted first draft of last 3 chapters of dissertation to advisor and waiting on feedback, so I've got a bit of time to think these thoughts, and maybe put up something for ruhk, inc. My first client project is finished, and now I'd need to get active on it or wait for more word of mouth to generate business.
I don't really want to move, but am not super-opposed to it. The time and effort to sell the house is a big de-motivator on that. I'd need a really nice offer to sway me.
I really enjoy my work, and the research I'm doing with company data. I'd like to find or make a similar gig elsewhere. Maybe the promotion/raise will be enough to keep me. I have no idea what it may be, my boss is sometimes not too aware of things, so his comment on 'not much' could actually be my 20k target.....then I'd be ok with staying. As an example, when we were first bought I asked him about the ESOP. He said we could buy stock but we were not given stock. I was confused as the manual had made it seem like there was. Sure enough after 2 years we all started getting stock in the company as a yearly contribution into a retirement fund. He'd worked there for years and never noticed?
