Of course, and I'm almost surprised you haven't realized it. One side won't do it because they would have to admit that there ARE small gains, and they are absolutely unwilling to do that when it would grant the other even a modicum of credit to do so. The other side won't be happy unless the gains are larger. Some because they haven't benefitted yet, and the rest because they otherwise have to defend the small gains against argument from everyone else. Simple, really.

I was trying to make it a joke. Didn't really want to be depressing. On the other hand:

In my case it's easy. I quit a job to start a business. I'm a little over one year in, and most small business struggle for the first few years. The job I quit was horrible in a lot of ways, but not pay wise. I never took a pay cut, and in fact got a raise pretty much every single year, even if they were small the last couple. During the worst couple years of the recession my pay increased by over 25%. Had I kept the job I'd probably be making more this year than I had at any point in my life, since I'd done that pretty much every year since I started that job. Opti is in a very similar career, except she was further along in hers. I was still working my way up from junior positions to more technical management type jobs. She was already further along, lost her job, and was probably facing age discrimination and the problem of most companies wanting new employees that they could underpay instead of experienced employees that wanted top dollar for their knowledge. I'm not talking just about me though. I have several people in my circle of friends that are struggling right now. Some are young, some are older, they're all in different industries. The employment market, at least in this area of California is still employer friendly. When you lose a job, it can still take a while to replace it. I know at least 6 people that have lost jobs just in the last six months. mind me asking what county you are in?

Things are improving.
It is just spotty and as usual weather, i.e. employment is regional and cyclic/fickle on one's local employer pool.
Where I work at my sub-acute, proudly under-employed at this specific job since March 2011, the nurse that got mad at me, just recently quit our facility FT and now works there as FT weekend shifts every other weekend.

I live in upstate NY. Way upstate. The recovery and job growth has completely passed us by. By I'm happy to hear other areas of the country are thriving.

I've realized looking back that, 2003 to 2014 is 11 years. While less than 1985 to 2003(18 years), downwardly mobile for over a decade feels more sucky than usual.
But that could just be me.

they still tour. i saw them 2 years ago. and they are still great. they can all REALLY sing and play. a lot of people think they are kinda corny. but i don't. they are really really tight. their shows sound better than their records, and hardly any band can say that.

Crap wrong button. Yes I celebrate small gains, but *you aren't living our reality*. Shaun has shared some of his. I have shared only bits and pieces of my near fore-closure story which ended with the sale being recorded on Valentines Day in 2007 I guess so I could never forget. Listen I refinanced house #1 with Hubby #1 when I made the choice between quitting a stressful job at AT&T and quitting the Hubby. (I sometimes wish I could go back and try it the other way. ) When hubby remarried, I found out about that refinance and that it hadn't happened like the divorce decree had let me just ask you a simple question: do you think your "reality" is more real than mine?let me answer first: i think i have had a really good "reality". things have gone well for me.and i know, for example, that average wages have not kept pace with inflation. mine have.so, i have a lot to be thankful for, and i know that i am in the minority.you are struggling, part time, and went through a near bankruptcy. i realize that things arereally hard for you (and, i guess, Shaun)- but my impression is that you are ALSO in theminority. my impression is that MOST people are doing "OK". not great, maybe not even as well as they were doing up to 2007- but OK. is that what you think, too? quick ANSWER. everyone's REALITY IS equally valid. Expecting someone however, to

Having reality issues obviously...
That and being sick with less than 4 hrs sleep all week, I'm not my best self and more likely to lose the battle with the evil trackpad and Win7 in general. DJ, I'm glad its working for you. Truly. My first house was under water when refinanced prior to me filing divorce. I actually wrote the codicil(sp?) to the divorce agreement myself because my lawyer thought it wouldn't fly and I said all that can happen is it won't work. I actually laughed when XH and his lawyer rewrote the terms. I knew the job market, I knew me. It wasn't doable how they wrote it, thus became unenforceable. (Wasn't really an issue, but I wrote something fair and three men just simply weren't as good at that piece of reality matawas. s I <- Yes, I earned it!
I would feel however, much more kind-hearted to pull-out of the slide and then be someone giving charity instead of having to rely/exist/manage with it.

No. I was a top 20% in a few periods, including my Pfizer run in the early naughts. I'm trying to hit being a 50 percenter or better in my area.
I'm somewhere between a 20 to 40%er in the wrong direction(as the song says).

I live in the Southern Tier area of NYS. Once a vibrant area. Binghamton is a shithole for a college town. Moved here from Washington state. Great for my autistic son as this state is great for people with disabilities. My husband who works in the HVAC field and did great in Washington state with specialties in radiant heat and geothermal is making $15.00 an hour. Made over $20.00 an hour back in Washington state.
Me? My autistic son is ten years old. I can't be a stable employee. How, when the kids have so many days off in a school year. In this area the economy IS NOT getting better.
My parents live in Western NYS and the economy IS NOT getting better there either.

I played that song in band, performed primarily on the football field at half-time, in High School... awesome drum parts (in the "Marching Band" version).

And why we moved back here? Closer to family and better services for our son. Just so frustrated with the "so called economy bouncing back". Whatever, it's doubly hard when you have only one spouse bringing home a paycheck.

interesting. there are a shit(*ad of unhappy people out there.
i am sorry to hear that, but at the same time, it explains a lot, like the fact that something like 60% of the country thinks we are heading in the wrong direction. i mean, i can understand how 40% could think that. i don't think i have ever met a member of my own party that thinks we are heading the right way. and i guess it is not surprising that 1/3 of the rest of the population feels that way too, based on what i see here.
i know dem is happy. anyone else?

i will share one other short memory with you, and then i will stop making this so personal and anecdotal, and just accept that there are people hurting out there.
in 2010 i bought a building. i remember that year very well, because the year i bought it, even though it was a relatively small building in a vast and rich county, it made the 10 largest purchases of commercial real estate in the county list that year. our business was doing very well. what i remember, what i wanted to recall now, is two things about that time. the first is that when i commuted to work, i literally NEVER ran into traffic- even though the route goes through the biggest intersection in the county. this continued for years- right up to 2013.
the second thing i remember is that everyone i interviewed during that time was really awesome. really smart, well trained, highly skilled, great attitudes. contrast this to just 1-2 years prior, when everyone sucked: no talent, no skills, and no attitude. so yes, i know what the poster who spoke earlier means by an "employers market".
we don't have one in the county any more. traffic is terrible, and good, skilled workers are nowhere to be found.
