I think the word choice goes to the nature of the altercation. The implication would be that national pride was a cipher for resentment of white privilege.

Santayana had something smart to say about history repeating... there is something that has always bothered me about that saying. it is that history is often told by those that wrote it, from their perspective, rather than how it actually went down. i would presume that Santayana was talking about the history as events actually happened, but that is by no means clear from the saying.
