"I have sole custody of my son. I had to get "permission" to get a passport, but since his dad has disappeared and wouldn't respond, it finally came down to a court order. My sole custody "wasn't enough" for whoever was doing the paperwork that day."
Sole legal or sole physical? I have both and the website specifically states if you have sole legal you don't need anything from the other parent. They sent a letter recently asking for a certified copy of the decree, which i sent, i should be receiving his passport soon, I hope. Also, did you apply at a post office? That is what I did and the guy seemed clueless as to what he was doing.

Yes, applied at PO, but it was after I sent my divorce decree thay wouldn't do it. They said they had in the past, but they had quit doing it and started cracking down harder. This was years ago. I had to get the dad's signiture or a court order specifically stating it was to get a passport. Cost me $1k in the end. Really hope yours goes more smoothly, but don't be surprised if they deny it. Very frustrating and can get expensive!

You are scaring me. I will be pissed if they don't do it because I already bought the plane tickets! If I need to I guess I can get the douchebag's signature, IF he feels like it. I would hate to even have to go to him!

Thyme, I'm going to apologize preemtively for asking a question that got your thread off topic into dullsville. Peeps, totally my fault for asking a question about mechanics, but really I've been punished enough. Please - no more detail on how to get a passport.

I just submitted last week for renewal of son's passport and had to present a death certificate to show why his dad wasn't with us and didn't sign the application. Original death certificate went with the renewal application for processing and will be returned to me with the new passport.

Well, not sure I've done anything. I did listen, but I'm not sure I was being a good friend as much as a nosy nelly. I would have listened to a total stranger tell this story. My stories are boring!
Although, I will say that if I ever see MIL around, I will start making phone calls, and she is small and old. I will take her out if I need to. [/span]
