I don't even know why I'm posting yet, I know it's WAY too early ... LOL
DD is getting her Bachelors in a (vocational) hotel management school. (College is three years here.) She alternates classes and working in the school restaurant for six months of the year, and then she does an internship. Last year she did a four-month internship at a luxury hotel in the south of France (the school only offers internships at 4*, 5* and "Palace" hotels).
Second-year students have to do their internship in English. DD wants to do hers in the US. The US is the ONLY country the school uses a placement service for.
She filled out her info (it took them a few tries to get it right because obviously DD does NOT need a visa.) Tonight she got two offers for skype interviews within 15 minutes of each other: one in upstate NY, and one in Carmel, CA.
I don't need to tell you which one she prefers!
All this to say, are any of you posters near Carmel? I know that Bonny is near SF. I know Dark and Sarahjese are SOMEWHERE around there, but I don't really know where. I think Molly is much further south.
Of course she has to actually get an offer LOL! I know I'm jumping the gun here, but I'm both nervous and excited and wondering whether some of you actually live near there.
ETA: OMG! She got another request from CO while I was typing this!

Who pays for the housing during the internship. That can make a big difference. Carmel area will be more expensive than upstate NY. Depending what her outside interests are, upstate NY can be interesting too.

Haha Phoenix, the guy made a mistake.
Turns out he was the CA guy but he posted using a CO address. He wrote DD on skype with a CO addy saying "So are you ready for your interview Fri?" DD said, so what do I answer, I don't know who he is?! I said, try asking if he works in CA too.
She did, and he answered "Oops! Yes, it's me, I meant the interview for Carmel." LOL.
I also told DD she probably needs to set up a second skype addy.

Tennesseer, we don't know yet. Some hotels offer room and board but pay very little. Others pay normal wages, but you have to find a place to live.
It's a long, long story that I don't have the energy to go into right now, but we want her to do what she wants, what will make her happy.
The short version is her dad (my ex) left when she was 1 month old and had nothing to do with her for 19 years. Yet he remained very close to her two big brothers, and he (and/or his parents) paid for their college and grad school, room and board, travel abroad, etc. I consider myself VERY lucky that my kids have all remained close in spite of this situation. Frankly, it's a miracle.
My ex's parents are kindly helping me with her tuition. But if I have to take out a loan for this, so be it. Same with DD. She knows she may need to take a loan for all or part of this experience. She still really wants to do it. DH and I planned to get DD through her Bachelors loan-free, but that plan did NOT include a six-month stint in the US where none of my friends or family live.
DD is NOT academic. She has ALWAYS struggled in school. She has come a LONG way, so money is just not that much of a consideration in this. We just want her to be happy and get through her Bachelors degree. Believe me, it's been a long, uphill struggle lol. She is FINALLY just "getting it", why we are trying to force encourage her get this degree. She LOVES the work itself, but she really hates school.
Her astonishment and pure joy at getting all these requests for interviews tonight was just amazing, and incredible to witness!
ETA: As of 14 Feb, DD is over halfway done with her Bachelors. So hopefully now it's downhill all the way LOL. And thankfully she has chosen a field where she can move up even without a graduate degree.

Thanks T-dog! We went there eight years ago, and LOVED it. I think that is why DD is so excited at the idea of going back there.

It's late here so I'm going to bed. I will update as things progress. She has her CA interview on Fri, and her NY interview on Sun. Both on skype. Thanks, as always!

Dark lives pretty close to Carmel I think. I used to live in Santa Cruz and Watsonville. Yay for your DD! I hope the interviews go great.

Debt, I live south of Bonny and north of Dark. Molly may be living further south or inland. I base that stricktly on the temperatures she has reported. And I second Bonnie: you have to come visit us, uh... DD I mean

My mom grew up in the Carmel/Monterrey area and just retired there. My uncle (mom's brother) and his family all live in the area, too. My brother is not too far away in Santa Barabara, but I'm pretty far away. It is one of my favorite places to visit, and if she likes aquariums at all, the one in Monterey Bay is among the best in the US.

I live about an hour from Carmel and work just down the road. If I walk to the other side of the building I'd be staring right at it. My office faces north so I'm looking at Seaside and the bay in the foreground and Santa Cruz in the background. This would be a pretty cool area to intern depending on what she's into. Still a decent military presence with the Defense Language Institute and Naval Postgraduate School if she's into young cute guys in uniform. Good spot to bag a wealthy husband if she's into the gold digging thing. Lots of little punk surfers and skaters if she's looking for something mom wouldn't approve of. Don't worry, I can show her all the good dive bars in Monterey and the good places to get 2am food in Sand City and Seaside.

I feel like Arnold Horshack in Welcome Back Kotter "Ooooh, Ooooh, I know where you live" LOL, ETA: Definitely a good excuse for a Central CA YM Meet up.

Definitely need a central coast CA meet up!
DH - Carmel is expensive so hopefully they will provide housing. If not, she should be able to find a crash pad. Carmel is very upsacle and a perfect place for Hospitality industry interns. I am 2-3 hours south - pm me your email and we can take this offline if/when you wish.
Dark - I need to go on the bar tour!
Back to the trust BS - will be done today! Anyone know where my father put the pink slip to his car? What about the deed to his house? lol He covered his VA life insurance policies with me countless times but still can't find the important stuff!

I'm always willing to organize a pub crawl. Just let me know when you'll be out this way.

Debt, When you make it to the states, I'm so willing to make the trek cross country for the meetup. And I'll take Dark up on the pub crawl, as long as Loop joins us...

Thanks for all these responses! You guys are so great, as always! It makes me feel like we have extended family there LOL. Her interview is tomorrow night (on skype), and I don't expect that they'll give her an answer straight away. I have no idea of how many people they are interviewing or hiring. If / when she gets an answer, I will definitely let you know! As far as a meet-up goes, since we were in CA just last summer, it's pretty unlikely, for financial reasons. Especially with trying to cover this. But we'll see. I'll let you guys know what happens! And Joss, I woke up thinking, "and there's Joss around there of course!" and there you were LOL. We went to the aquarium when we were there eight years ago, and loved it. My DS3 has a thing for seals lol.

Constanz, it's in the Adirondacks. It's gorgeous up there (I used to go to camp around there), but probably not so much fun for a 20YO lol.

See, we told you not to pay down on the rentals because you might have an emergency and need the cash... Mom might have an "emergency" trip to Carmel! Besides staying with me, there's some beautiful camping at Point Lobos. So basically besides needing a rental car, the only big expense would be airfare. If you don't have to work this summer I think you can do it! I'm a YM

Oh Bonny you evil woman you! LOL! ;-) I don't have to work in the summers. (There is no work, otherwise I'd happily work in July!) I keep trying to get my school to hire me for their July Summer School but they don't hire English teachers for that. I'm done at the end of the first week of July and start again last week of August (my school starts up early).
Let's see what happens and where DD ends up. She has to get the job first lol!
Also, we are suddenly very much in demand this summer! DS1 just left for a new posting in the Middle East and he is begging us to visit. Visiting DS1 would cost a fraction of what going to CA would.
I just have to wait and see (and as you know patience is NOT one of my many virtues lol).

"DS1 just left for a new posting in the Middle East" Where? I wouldn't go to Syria but there's a lot of other places I'd visit including Egypt outside of Cairo. BTW we can have this conversation off-line too.
