THANK GD it's not Syria, Bonny. It nearly was.
At this point it's a financial issue, and wanting to make both kids happy, but it's not a safety issue.

So, DD had her skype interview. She thinks it went pretty well but says it's hard to be sure. They should give her an answer in a week to 10 days. She was interviewed by the HR person and the hotel manager.
They asked her if she had any plans for accommodation (she said no, not yet, she'll work on that if she gets the job). They also offered to train her to do reception desk work in English (since she's only done it in French).
I think that's a good sign, but we'll see!
She has the interview for upstate NY on Sun, but she really prefers CA.

Yes Dark she's very cute LOL. She's petite and very slim. Given the cost of her school uniforms, she knows she's NOT allowed to gain weight LOL!
If she gets this internship I will DEFINITELY be asking you and Loop for housing advice, as well as your phone numbers!
ETA: From what I can tell, you guys are the closest to Carmel. Of course my family is in the US, in NY, and most of my friends are on the east coast (NY/CT/MA). DH's best childhood friend and his wife (the ones we did the road trip with last summer) are near Palm Springs.
Shane that's cool that your family lives there too! It is an incredibly beautiful place.

I'm thinking DD must have one wild English accent; British English accent from Debt's husband New Yawk American English from Debt The outrageously French accented English from school But don't worry Debt, we Californians will "fix" her English because, you know, like, we don't speak with any accent, for sure.

I don't even know why I'm posting yet, I know it's WAY too early ... LOL DD is getting her Bachelors in a (vocational) hotel management school. (College is three years here.) She alternates classes and working in the school restaurant for six months of the year, and then she does an internship. Last year she did a four-month internship at a luxury hotel in the south of France (the school only offers internships at 4*, 5* and "Palace" hotels). Second-year students have to do their internship in English. DD wants to do hers in the US. The US is the ONLY country the school uses a placement service for. She filled out her info (it took them a few tries to get it right because obviously DD does NOT need a visa.) Tonight she got two offers for skype interviews within 15 minutes of each other: one in upstate NY, and one in Carmel, CA. I don't need to tell you which one she prefers! All this to say, are any of you posters near Carmel? I know that Bonny is near SF. I know Dark and Sarahjese are SOMEWHERE around there, but I don't really know where. I think Molly is much further south. Of course she has to actually get an offer LOL! I know I'm jumping the gun here, but I'm both nervous and excited and wondering whether some of you actually live near there. ETA: OMG! She got another request from CO while I was typing this! We are inland, 3 hours from Carmel, and completely willing to visit your daughter as often as you deem necessary. If I could live anywhere in the world, I'd pick Carmel. (happy sigh)

LOL Bonny!
Honestly DD doesn't have much of an accent (I guess all those accents cancelled each other out LOL.) But the little accent she has left is definitely French. But unlike most French people, she can totally pronounce her TH.
I have NO accent. I have officially heard that from several sources. Except when I ask for caw-fee LOL. DS1 (26) still teases me about that.
When I was little my BFF (same age as me, 53) was in speech therapy. They finally figured out she had a Polish accent, like her immigrant mom!

Oh Molly, thank you SO MUCH!!!
I finally "fessed up" about this thread AFTER DD's interview. She is still getting her head around the fact that she has "extended family" near Carmel, and that I trust them, yet I only know them from the internet (apart from Bonny, who I know IRL, and I'm good friends with Bonny's best friend who lives in Paris.)
DD said, laughing, I'm older now, so I'm not going to even bother to mention all the SHITE you gave me when *I* wanted to talk to strangers on the internet. When *I* wanted to do it, you took away my internet access. But it's totally okay for *YOU* to do it. But that's OK, I know you were only looking out for me, and I get it.
LOL!

But if you can come to Cali you must!
Malarky - assumed Loop was in on the Pub Crawl - after all, everyone knows we only put up with Dark 'cause of her.

Eh.... Don't you mean caw-fee and tawhck? ; You know my mother came from L.I. I never heard her accent until she started tawcking with other New Yawkers. But the best speech therapy story was about my niece. Poor girl grew up in N. Viginia (Washington D.C. area) and was sent to speech therapy. When the speech therapist met my (paternal) uncle she pointed her finger at him and said "You!; you're the reason your child is in speech therapy!". So it's true, you can take the boy out of Brooklyn, but you can't take the Brooklyn out of the boy. All kidding aside, best of luck to your DD. You know you can ask any of us to help out or provide a home-cooked meal for her.

ETA - and next time I will only say it behind your back. Uh,... um,... er ... Dark, would you look over there behind you please - what IS that?

Joss, I USED to talk to strangers online! But now I only talk to friends LOL.
Thanks Miss T ... frankly me too.
Update: DD had the interview for upstate NY tonight. She got on really well with the woman and she thinks she wants to go there. The woman basically offered her the internship, to be confirmed tomorrow. Argh!!!
I think DD'd be MUCH happier in CA than in the boonies, as she knows. She says she'd rather go wherever they offer her more front desk work (as opposed to restaurant work). The final decision, of course, is hers (assuming she even ends up having the choice).

Part of the reason DD liked this woman so much was that she too was skyping from home, and hadn't hung up properly before telling her dog that she thought DD was great and that she was going to offer her the internship as soon as she clears it with her boss tomorrow. LOL.
I'm not sure that's the best reason to accept the job though.
ETA: I couldn't find a location for the NY Crue Fest?

ETA: The hotel is on Lake George.
ETA2: Distance from Montreal, 155 miles.

Tennesseer I know it's just gorgeous there, but do you think a 20YO would be happy there for 6 months, with two days off a week, ie without the possibility of going elsewhere during those two days off? As an intern, you can't accumulate your days off, you have to take them off every week, and sometimes you can only take one day off at a time, so you can't even go away overnight.
THAT is what I'm worried about. I'm scared DD'll get the equivalent of "cabin fever".

DH2 - What concerns me is that you are willing to expose your 20 y/o DD to be shaped and molded, even influenced by us YM'ers in all our weirdness and strange glory! She'll probably even like us and listen to us just because we are not her parents!

If she wants to take day/overnight trips, your daughter can take Amtrak into Manhattan when she wants to get away. There is an Amtrak station about 10 miles from Lake George and she can take the 'Adirondack' train back and forth. If your DD likes American history, there is plenty of Revolutionary War history in the area. I know she's 20 and 20-year-olds probably like other things besides history, but there are things to do. Plus there are plenty of young people who go to Lake George (depending of course on the season). As late teenagers/early 20s, we went to Lake George for long weekends during the summer. Of course that was 40 plus years ago.

Tennesseer, what I meant was I assumed she wouldn't have time to leave the area! How long does it take to get into Manhattan? I'm guessing 8 hours or more but maybe I'm very wrong?! Alas, she is not a history buff, but she likes hiking. What concerns me is that you are willing to expose your 20 y/o DD to be shaped and molded, even influenced by us YMers in all our weirdness and strange glory! She'll probably even like us and listen to us just because we are not her parents!
I KNOW she would indeed like you guys! Maybe that's what I'm worried about?!

DH-if she has a car, she is about 2 hours from Burlington, Vt (home of the U. of Vt.) which is a real good college party town. She would also be about 3 hour (driving) from Montreal. Or again, she can take the Amtrak Adirondack train to Montreal. Another fun place and language wise, she would be right at home.

She won't have a car, Tenn, she doesn't even drive. That drives ME nuts but since she has always struggled in school she never wanted to learn to drive on top of the rest (it's much harder and more expensive here). But that is a great point, maybe some other employees would?!
I know at the last place she worked there was always at least one other person with the same days off. This place is MUCH MUCH bigger, so there are probably a bunch of them with the same days off!
Thanks again, Tenn, that is a great point!!!

DH-it's about a 4 hour drive from Lake George to Manhattan. A long drive but could work as an over night trip (two days off).
