Fixed = please change yours also. Have no idea where THAT came from - never commented on EE board and only thing I read over there is the ANONYMOUS thread because it cracks me up. Not that there is anything wrong with them ... better stop now berfore I get more benind than I already have ... never mind! Seriously though, bad lupus day and just hanging around on the internet, looking for something good to read. Hmmmm, guess I'll go see what is on my kindle since there is not a so-bad-it's-good Doxy thread or anything else of interest. ETA - California might also encourage her to learn to drive as EVERYONE drives in CA.

Tenn, so that it means it's about 6h to NYC. Much closer than I thought, but still difficult to do overnight.
But, there are possibilities! So I am happy for her. In any case DD is a trooper, if she decides to take this, she will do her best there and make it work.
Sarahjese I will done. Sorry I'm not as entertaining as Doxie lol! I hope you feel better soon, I know you have had a really tough time of it lately.

Night all! It's late here and I'm going to bed. I'm guessing this will all pan out within the next few days. I think DD is wise to go with whichever hotel offers her more front desk experience because that's much harder to acquire, especially for the people coming through the foreign placement agency (as she is). Thanks again for all your help!

DH-if your daughter decides on Carmel-good news. She is 17 miles away from an Amtrak station (in Salinas) which can take her to either Oakland/San Francisco or Los Angeles (the Coast Starlight train). San Francisco is a 3 hour train ride from Salinas. Los Angeles is like 8 1/2 hours. So if she wants out of Carmel for a day or two, she has a couple of options. The Coast Starlight Schedule

Constanz, it's in the Adirondacks. It's gorgeous up there (I used to go to camp around there), but probably not so much fun for a 20YO lol. Plenty of fun to be found in the Adirdondacks. Lake placid has a very active nightlife/ club scene. ETA: I just saw it was lake George. Lake George as a 20 year old is freakin Nirvana. Huge party scene. I live about 3 hours from there.

ETA - California might also encourage her to learn to drive as EVERYONE drives in CA. ...fwiw, the MST system is user-friendly and goes all over... I'd expect the hotel would either have a bus stop nearby, or a shuttle... I've got family who have lived in that area, so I'm well-familiar with it and visit often... tbh, now I'm curious about favorite non-bar hot spots Dark recommends? ...she'll also be able to find native French-speakers in the Carmel, CA, area, if/when she feels a little lonely... ...I'm not familiar with the Lake George, NY, area... ...best wishes and kudos to your working girl! eta ...kent is near the bay area, too... right?

I'm not following... ...fine... withhold good eateries from the teatotaler, why don'tcha? ...fwiw, I've been encouraged to try the Mucky Duck next time for the best burger... would you agree? so far, I've liked Phat Burger near Del Ray Oaks or an Islands burger at the DMC...

And FWIW, Not EVERYONE drives or has a driver's license in CA. My BFF (I really do hate that term) whom Debt knows didn't get her driver's license until she was 18 and promptly went off to college in NYC. It was kind of scary to be in a car with her in her mid 20s. Ditto for our attorney. And we're all San Diego kids which had sucky transit when we were kids (1970s).

Eh.. the Mucky Duck is alright. I prefer the Crown and Anchor for pub food and beer selection. The burgers are better at the Bayonet and Blackhorse golf course club house. It's got a good bay view from the dining room too. Not Pebble Beach good, but you can also get great burgers for like $8.

We're off to visit DH's family, so I may be offline for a few days. I just wanted to say that DD hasn't had any news yet.

She just sent me an e-mail; she's on her way to visit her DH's family.

Just wanted to check in, although Bonny posted my great news yesterday!
To be honest, I do NOT think we will be able to afford to send DD there AND go to CA again ourselves.
But thanks again so much for your help and support! I hope to get a few of your phone numbers before DD leaves for her internship. She doesn't have an exact start date yet, but it should be around mid-May. She is VERY excited lol!

Update! I paid the placement agency today. That hurt a bit lol. I knew that the hotel had pre-selected and interviewed 3 candidates: DD, and two others (a girl and a guy). Today DD told me that in fact, the hotel hired all three. Turns out the two others are from the same school as DD, but from another campus, several hours away. (Her school has four campuses around France.) The girl contacted DD on Facebook, suggested that she and DD fly out to CA together (the guy is traveling separately) and invited DD to share a place with them! So DD is very happy, and I am relieved, because it's much less daunting for her this way. They still have to find a place to live (the placement agency is supposed to help them with that) but DD feels less "alone" now.

...maybe we should plan a proboards meetup in her hotel lobby, while she's on duty, and then we could get rowdy to test her customer service skills...

Thank you all SO much! BTDT, if you're going to do it, do it in October, her last month LOL. I don't have exact dates yet but it should be early May to late Oct. I should have the exact dates by the end of the week.

Sounds wonderful, debt. I'm really very happy for your DD! Carmel is absolutely beautiful. I can't think of many places I'd rather call home.

I hope so Rukh! Alas it seems really pricey there.
The placement guy is SUCH a twit. DD wrote "I have been in contact with the other two interns and we have decided we would like to share housing."
He wrote back, "I have great news for you! You are actually one of three interns at the hotel! I suggest that you share housing, because that can save you money!" Unbelievable! He's probably about 12 LOL.
Off to bed with me!

...it is pricey in the area, but some smaller places could be reachable for an intern... especially in Pacific Grove... places go fast, though... so what's listed today could be gone tomorrow... it may be wise to stay in the hotel for a few days while she looks? monterey.craigslist.org/apa/
