What do you really think of single people?

As as follow up to the question about childless couples, what do you really think about single people?

Is there something wrong with them? Are they criminals waiting to happen? Are they smart? Or selfish?

Here's your chance to let them have it.

Being a single person, I like single people just fine. I have no opinion of married people, I'm fine with people either way.

There are 2 kinds of single people that I know -- one group just hasn't found a mate yet and the other are happy not having one. Either group is OK with me.

I don't really have a one-size-fits-all impression of single people, actually, because people may be single for a variety of reasons including (1) never been married; (2) divorced; (3) widowed. And single people come in all ages, from very young to old and grey. Some are men. Some are women. Some are liberals. Some are conservative. Some are living with someone. Some live alone. Some like dogs. Some collect tea cozies. Some play Halo all night long. Some knit incessantly.

I will say, though, that when I meet an ESPECIALLY quirky or rude or wackadoodle single person, I do sometimes think "Hmmm... I can see why this person is single."

I don't have any problems with people being single. Sometimes you just don't find the right person. Sometimes a career takes up so much of your time that there isn't any time or energy to put into a relationship. Sometimes people marry the wrong person, & don't want to marry again (at least not for awhile).

I don't consider someone with a DF single. Technically you check the single box, but you're not alone. Are we talking those that are legally single or those that aren't in a relationship single?

I realize what technically qualifies as single can be a bit tricky, I was refering to single as in not in a relationship. If you have a "boyfriend" or "DF" then you're not single. I wouldn't consider Zib single since she's in a relationship.

I was single until my late twenties and did very little serious dating during my twenties. I wanted to work in foreign countries and being in a serious relationship seemed like a solid way to jeopardize that dream.

People who can't be single, who line up their next relationship while they are still in a relationship seem to cause a lot of chaos for themselves and those around them.

Single people just seem like regular people to me, maybe people who have met a good mate or aren't suited to a long term romantic commitment or aren't yet at an age/stage for a relationship. There are so many reasons to be single and it is something you can always change.

Also, given the correlation between divorce rates and age, I think people who are single at your age are smart, Phoenix.

If they are over 25 or so, I tend to assume people (myself included) are single for a reason.

I'm in the happy not having one lot. I don't think there is any right or wrong either way. I am at a point right now that I don't want to have to take anyone else's thoughts or feelings into consideration. Maybe I'll change my mind later. Right now I have too much going on with my girls to even bother with a relationship. I have a "friend" who serves a certain purpose. That's all I need right now.

I've moved quite a bit since finishing grad school. Until now I haven't had the right mix of time and free funds for dating. The last person I dated wanted to see me every single fricking day. I was too busy for that shit.

I think the population of singles (at least in my area) is so diverse it's impossible to make any sort of generalizations about them. A few of my friends are very happily single, and another few are single but looking.

The one exception would be someone who was single, never married, never in a long-term relationship, and expressed no interest in dating. That might strike me as a bit odd. But again, you never know the reasons behind it.

I'd fall into the "discouraged dater" catagory, similar to "discouraged worker". Meaning I'd date if I found someone, but basically gave up for a while and might re enter the dating world when the time is right.

It depends on their age. As long as they're twenty something or younger I don't really think about it at all. Once they hit 30+ and have remained single I tend to think there's something wrong with them. By the time they're 50+ and have remained single their whole lives I figure they're gay/lesbian and living in the closet.

I sort of fall into this category as well. Or maybe it is too lazy to date. Sometimes it feels like a lot of work & effort. For now I am happy being single. Or maybe it's just complacency. I'm sure I'll get back into dating at some point when I get bored.

I think the same thing about single people as I do the married people both with or without kids. Some are great and some are jerks and they all have pretty much the same choices we all have. If they are unhappy or lonely or whatever... it's on them to change things.

Kinda. I've been legally single since my divorce was finalized in 1992. I love my BF more than I've ever loved any other man and his children nearly as much as my own BUT if I couldn't come home to my own place after being at his for a few days, I'd go plum crazy. A friend commented this weekend that we act like an old married couple and I told him if we had to live together like one neither of us would see "old".

And I think it gets worse the longer the time someone lives alone. I think if you've lived alone for 20+ years that it will be very difficult to live with another person as you are so set in your ways. That may be a fine solution for some but for people like my MIL she doesn't understand why no one wants to move in with her and live in her basement apartment.

All you have to do is live with her for 24 hours and you'll understand why. I can't believe a year ago or so that I even thought about it
