he turns 12 in April. i think the biggest thing he has going for him is that he doesn't watch TV and doesn't play video games. that frees up countless hours per week for things like learning Hebrew (outside of school). GEEEBUS!! Hebrew, now I am jealous. Mind adopting a 32 year-old kid? No kidding, reason! Just to be able to go to a school where both cello and Mandarin are taught is awesome! That must be one heck of a school, whether public or private!

Yep, that would be one thing I would try to get accross if I found out my kid is being bullied. I might get him boxing lessons or martial arts or G-d knows what else, but start homeschooling just to prevent bullying would be the VERY LAST option.
Heck, I don't even react when my 3.5 yr old abuses his younger brother. I just tell the younger one - don't like it - don't let him do it.

Really?! You think people of average intelligence are deadheads? If that was your attitude, I can see why you got beat up. Ok, the people who actually paid attention in class and did their homework were segregated from those who didn't. Does that sound better to you?

djlungrot- we also chose to home school our daughter in high school due to what they (grammar school child study team -school counselors) had labeled a 'school anxiety' problem. Nobody could ever really tell us what the problem was, all we know is that our daughter was physically sick for many years all caused from anxiety over school. Long story short-within months her health was restored and she went on to excel in college. A regular school environment does not fit the needs of all.

I had lousy teachers who hated their jobs mostly but I still learned because we all behaved or else. None of this PC nonsense.

As parents we will sometimes intentionally have contact with people who had what most would consider some social or behavioral issues and will have a discussion with our kids either before or after about why they don't want to be like that. Not sure how effective that is but just isolation and avoidance doesn't seem like a good option. Not that this really relates to home schooling or not since this can happen either way.

Yeah, not calling people derogatory names is a nice place to start.

You're kids are already screwed swamp, they have a working mother and a dad who used to participate in the free lunch program. Might as well overachieve at something and put them in public school to finish the job.

Might as well send them to one of those charity run orphanages that are so prevalent.I think it would be better to have them adopted out by a family whose mother is willing to sacrifice for her children and will protect them by homeschooling and a father who provides properly for his family so his wife can do these things.

I didn't really pay attention in class, did homework only when I felt like it and still made As and Bs ETA: That's not what I wanted to quote but I'm a slacker, I'm not fixing it.

CL you were a victim of the dumbing down of the public education system. If you had had to go to school "back in the day" you would never have passed and would have been beaten with rulers by nuns every time you failed to do your homework.
Think of what you could have accomplished in-between beatings!

I did get beaten with rulers by nuns but that was for playing in the ditch behind the school with the boys Mostly the teachers didn't care because I knew the stuff, I spent the time I should've been listening to them explain stuff I already understood reading. Or sleeping

I am sure had parents that were not involved in what they were doing. That is a huge problem today. I thought it was because they were in public school? I am confused becasuse are you saying that public school kids with parental involvement wouldn't be bad kids? Which is what I really think this whole debate boils down to, being an involved parent with your kid. I figure either way someone somewhere is going to think I am a crappy parent no matter what I do, my goal isn't to get approval from others it is to raise my kid. No, you are misunderstanding me. I said IF I had kiddos today, they would be in PRIVATE school because of all the drugs, gangs and violence. There is more attention on these things than actually teaching your kids. If you live in a great school district, then great.. Private school is more strict, and IMO, it should be.. Discipline is seems to be better managed. However, yes.. there are parents who are not involved with their kids.. but in their own lives. You have the underprivileged ones, who's parents ARE the one;s on drugs. You have well off Parents who just hand their kids $$$ and because they have a "great" lifestyle, lil Johnny or Mary would never spend those $$$ on drugs.. wrong again and bury their heads in the sand comes to mind. I know many great parents in both Private and Public. They are very involved in their kids lives.. they have rules.. and discipline. In my experience with my grown kids.. communication is the key.

Riff-raff comes in all colors and socioeconomic levels.
