In part: www.msnbc.msn.com/id/46209349/ns/health-womens_health/?ocid=ansmsnbc11NEW YORK — The nation's leading breast-cancer charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is halting its partnerships with Planned Parenthood affiliates — creating a bitter rift, linked to the abortion debate, between two iconic organizations that have assisted millions of women. The change will mean a cutoff of hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants, mainly for breast exams. Planned Parenthood says the move results from Komen bowing to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Komen says the key reason is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress — a probe launched by a conservative Republican who was urged to act by anti-abortion groups. The rupture, which has not been publicly announced as it unfolded, is wrenching for some of those who've learned about it and admire both organizations.

Because some Planned Parenthood Clinics perform abortions, lets let poor women not get mammograms. Nice thinking there, asswipes.

I saw this earlier today, and was not happy about it. But it's typical; all it takes is a howl from some group who doesn't get it, and the knee-jerk reactions begin. In the long run, I think Komen will be sorry for what they've done, if enough pressure comes from supporters to make it so.
And Komen's reaction to it all was particularly two-faced. They said they wanted to maintain "a positive relationship" with Planned Parenthood. How nice of them. AFTER yanking all your financial support, you want to stay positive? Positive does not pay the bills, and does not save women's lives. I'm not taking a stance either pro- or anti-abortion here, just saying that the Komen group did themselves no favor by doing this. Unfortunately, they have the financial balls to not only get away with it, but survive whatever fallout occurs.

I just did the local Race for the Cure last weekend, before this story broke. Had it been announced earlier, I would not have done the race. And I will not do it again. This kind of thing from an organization that has a literal army of lawyers whose only job it is to police the smallest (mis)use of any of their trademarked slogans ought to know better. When the business of your business is more important than the lives you are supposed to help protect, your business is too damned important.

well SGK probably knew that women who have abortions have an increased risk of breast cancer. So they made the rational decision to stop funding abortions, and thereby lowering the risk of breast cancer. I'm shocked that all these women get up in arms when the chance of breast cancer is reduced??
If someone told me that smoking lead to higher risk of lung cancer, I'd stop smoking.

Women will still be able to get mammograms. They will just have to go some where else to get them. It isnt the end of the world.

I've been to a Planned Parenthood, and nobody forced me to have an abortion, or even mentioned it.

It's not like SGK went out and smashed all the mammogram machines or something..... I'm going to make a donation to SGK now - at least now I know the money will be going to cancer research and not killing a baby, some ho decided she didn't want.

What we don't spend on planned parenthood, we will spend on Welfare and other services for the little ones that result.

Were you pregnant when you were there? When I was a teenager I went there too and no one mentioned abortion...but I also wasn't pregnant. I did have a friend who was pregnant and they did counsel her on her options...abortion was one of her options they brought up.

If so, I say kudos to them for taking a stand If they did, wouldn't it be a prudent PR move to make that public knowledge? And I'm not sure they took a stand if they were pressured by pro-life groups. I don't know, they never seemed to say anything about abortion before this..........

No, it's not, but it's another pile of shit that poor people have to deal with. That's the bitch about being poor :-( You're right. Being poor sucks. We bitch about the cost of Medicaid and welfare, so we have a program that pays for mammograms for poor women without the government chipping in. Now it goes away. So much for that argument that if we take away welfare, private organizations will take over......

I should not have to add this, but not getting mammograms increases the rist of breast cancer as well. www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/testing/types/mammograms/benefits_risks.jspThere are a number of factors that can factor into a woman's chances: smoking, weight, alcohol use, having children after a certain age, family history. What Komen did was remove a tool for diagnosing the issue for any woman, whether they've had abortions or not. Not everyone, not even the majority of women, use PP for the abortion services. www.plannedparenthood.org/about-us/who-we-are/planned-parenthood-glance-5552.htm Only three percent of the five million people who have used PP services have used it for abortion-related purposes. The abortion issue should not have been a factor in the decision.

I'm not sure I understand why everyone is so upset...this is a private organization who is choosing to direct their monies elsewhere....they have no obligation to fund Planned Parenthood or any other organization. My guess is they will still fund mammograms for the poor, just not through Planned Parenthood. I'm ok with that.

The board of directors made the decision to stop funding an organization that is known for baby-killing. (even if they do other things, PP is famous for ONE thing) Mammograms are still available to the poor people. Like I said SGK didn't smash all the mammogram machines :-)

This actually isn't very sudden. I work in the non-profit community and in my county alone for the last three years we've watched Komen withdraw its funding from community agencies who used to provide low-cost or no-cost breast exams and mammograms. I personally know of 5 agencies that have lost their funding without explanation, including two that Komen funded for more than 20 years! Sadly it appears that they have been shifting their focus from grass-roots prevention, early intervention and community-based fund-raising to corporate in-gathering of $$ for pharmaceutical research. Word on the street around here is that their primary goal has shifted to fundraising for organizational self-preservation and for the feeding of the insatiable and mutually-profitable bohemeth that is pharmacology. So sad, because study after study has shown unequivocably that prevention and early intervention are the best "cure." The research results of advanced-stage cancer pharmacology? Dismal. My charity dollars will be going elsewhere.

PP though has pissed me off with their continual monthly followup request for more donations.
