Georgia being sued by foreign Country's
ATLANTA — Mexico and 10 other countries have joined the legal fight against Georgia's tough new immigration law, warning that the strict crackdown could jeopardize close ties between the U.S. and its Latin American neighbors.
The nations filed briefs late Wednesday in support of civil liberties groups who asked a federal judge to declare Georgia's new law unconstitutional and block it from taking effect. The filing marks a new phase in the legal showdown that has pitted Georgia's attorneys against groups who had threatened to challenge the law even before it was adopted by lawmakers.
Mexico's move also echoes the legal strategy it pursued to challenge tough new immigration rules enacted by other states. Attorneys representing Mexico filed briefs challenging similar legislation adopted in Arizona and Utah.
Georgia's law, known as HB 87, would allow law enforcement to check the immigration status of a suspect who cannot provide identification and empowers them to turn over anyone found to be in the country illegally to federal authorities. It also adds new penalties for those convicted of harboring illegal immigrants and presenting false documents when applying for a job.
Gov. Nathan Deal's office on Thursday declined to comment, but he has praised the legislation as a "responsible step forward" in the absence of federal reform. Earlier this week, Deal urged farmers who claimed workers have been scared away by the new immigration restrictions to hire people on probation to work the fields instead.
The measure, Mexico said, would strain diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Mexico, "interfering with the strategic diplomatic interests of the two countries and encouraging an imminent threat of state-sanctioned bias or discrimination."
Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Peru also filed briefs Wednesday in support of the plaintiffs.
Other outside groups have also sought to intervene in the run-up to a highly anticipated hearing scheduled for Monday, when a judge could decide whether to block the law from taking effect. Court officials expect a crush of people to attend and are arranging for a spillover courtroom to hold the crowd.
The Anti-Defamation League filed an amicus brief this week warning that the law could deter Latinos from reporting crimes and create an underclass vulnerable to increased hate crimes and violence. And the American Immigration Lawyers Association claims the law forces police to make "highly discretionary judgment calls" about whom they should detain for immigration violations.

I keep seeing this in new state immigration laws. Can't LEO's check immigration status now if they choose to?

Gotta love the hypocricy of the corrupt Mexican govt. They have the most stringent immigration laws, perhaps in the world.

I keep seeing this in new state immigration laws. Can't LEO's check immigration status now if they choose to? No, they aren't allowed to enforce FEDERAL immigration laws at present! I live in Ga. in a rural FARMING area. The farmers are all crying that they can't get field hands to harvest the crops that are now coming in early due to the horrible heat we have been experiencing. They keep saying that no one else can do the field work, that they can't handle the heat & hard work. Well, we had a couple of heat related deaths of migrant workers last year so I guess not all of them can handle it either. The governor has started a program where the farmers are supposed to hire parolees to do the field work...it's too soon to know if it is doing any good but most of those guys aren't into WORK of any kind! That is why they have been to prison. And working in the fields would only give them an opportunity to "case" the irrigation systems so they could come back & steal the copper & pipes from those to hock for drugs. It seems that most of the illegals that generally do the field work are by-passing Ga. Going straight from Fl. to other states north of us like NC. Maybe this will be some incentive for the farmers to pay better wages to farm help. But then again....their former base of summer farm workers has been pretty much descimated.... They are too spoiled by their parents and too addicted to their electronics to put them down long enough to get a job...TEENS. And then there is the other "former" labor base...the ones sitting in front of their TVs or playing with their electronics that we are paying to stay sitting there...WELFARE! Seems to me that a lot of things have to change! And BTW, AL. just passed "their" immigration law that may be more strict than Ga.'s! And who cares if we pi$$ off Mexico? They may have to learn to live without all the U.S. $$$ that get sent home every week in money orders or other forms of $$ transfers.

Doesn't matter. The Feds will shit it down. States have no rights to make immigration policy.

I would love to see a 40% tax slapped on all money being transfered to Central and South America. Use the funds to send people back.

Ask Lakhota. Many civilizations were doomed and disintegrated into oblivion. In other words, when the European did it to the Native Americans, they were justified. But Latin Americans need to be kept out of the USA.

No read the definition of illegal, we have laws and rules in place to enter our country, if you do not follow the Laws what you have done is Illegal.

Native Americans(ie: Indians) also emigrated here. Latin Americans are bringing poverty, clogging our schools, taking jobs, getting free medical care, etc. 600 years ago, the continental US did not have a free for all entitlement social services system.

Or were they many, many different tribes that could barely get along with each other?

Shall we apply 150 year old legal concepts to this issue. Can I shoot them down if they are stealing my property? Can I use them for fertilizer if they jump my claim?
The latino's have perfectly good countries where they came from. Let them go home and straighten them out if they are unhappy with their lot.
