DH got lights on the tree last night. So I've got no excuse for tonight.
Am I the only weirdo who puts their tree up on Black Friday? Ours went up that day.

DH is sick, and for once, I’m not ready to strangle him over a man cold. Maybe it’s a Christmas miracle, lol. Not sure what he had, but he’s got a fever ranging between 100-102, and has chills and then cold and I can tell he feels kind of miserable. Regardless, he still went out and shoveled the driveway Sunday evening (that was the onset, so not sure he felt as bad then as he feels now). I had a one day work trip yesterday with a 6 am flight, so he managed to get the kids to daycare (because of course no school due to snow, so C went to daycare with M), went back home and crashed, then picked up both kids and did all the evening stuff plus bedtime. I had a delayed flight home, so walked in the house around 115am this morning. DH helped get kids and me out the door and then crashed again.
Here’s hoping he feels better soon, and that no one else catches it. He said a couple of others from his team at work emailed in sick today/yesterday - they had their team holiday outing on Friday, so I’m guessing someone there was sick.

Picked up stamps over lunch to mail my Christmas cards (hopefully I can get them in the mail tomorrow), and the last gift for my work secret Santa person.
And I hopefully spread some holiday cheer getting stamps - I know the post office is busy and not fun this time of year, so I asked around before I left work and picked up stamps for 3 coworkers so they didn’t also have to go wait in line at some point.

Just ordered my FIL’s Christmas gift, so that one is done.
Christmas cards are in and partially addressed. Still need stamps, so hopefully DH can go pick those up on Monday.

Thanks to a couple of work trips over the last few flights, I read more books than I have in a while.
700 Sundays by Billy Crystal - heartwarming ready about the Billy Crystal and his father and family during his childhood (700 Sundays refers to the number of Sundays that Billy had on earth with his father before his father passed away when he was a teen)
Extreme Measures (Mitch Rapp #11) by Vince Flynn and The Rembrandt Affair (Gabriel Allon #10) by Daniel Silva - both are series I like to read and while somewhat predictable, I still like them.
The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen - better than I expected
Holly Banks Full of Angst - this was a Kindle First Read or whatever it was called and it was terrible. I barely finished it.

Just finished Gods of Jade and Shadow. It was REALLY good, it's like an adult version of Rick Riordan's books. It deals with Mayan mythology. Thanks - I added this to my to read list!

And here’s what it takes to be “rich” here:
Kansas > Min. annual income to be in the top 20%: $111,928 per household (23rd lowest) > Income controlled by highest 20% of earners: 50.0% (25th lowest) > Min. annual income to be in the top 5%: $201,686 per household (24th lowest) > Median household income: $58,218 (21st lowest) > Cost of living: 10.0% less expensive than U.S. avg.

Welp that worked itself out, but not how I would have liked. No visiting tonight. SIl had a bleed and ended up back in the OR. She's out now but all visitors have been kicked out for the night. We're assuming everyone is okay, and sil/bil wanted to have time to recoup without the circus which is probably a good call. Hopefully will have more info soon. I hated hospital visitors after I had babies. I just passed a large object out a small hole, missed some meals, no sleep, no shower, hospital gowns. And c-Section would have been worse. We didn’t have local family, but a few friends stopped by. My real close friends were ok, but the rest was definitely awkward. Yes! My (make) boss (!!), our female team coordinator, and two male coworkers came to the hospital to visit when M was born. She was born by c/s, and it was the day we were headed home, but I was still uncomfortable. And the stress of trying to make sure she didn’t need to nurse while they were there because that’s not something I wanted to do in front of them with a newborn who is still figuring out how to nurse. I would never in a million years tell my boss because he truly meant well, but yeah, I’ll never go visit a coworker in the hospital if they just had a baby.

So DH made a comment the other day, and I’m still thinking about it a few days later. His comment was something along the lines of “with no mortgage payment, he would expect that our savings account would be higher than it was at the beginning of the year.” I pointed out to him that since January we put $12k in 2018 Roth accounts, and have put $6k in 2019 Roth IRAs (and will do the other $6k before the end of the year). So we’re still “saving” the money, but a different account.
He’s response was we’ll need cash when we finish our basement. True, but we have a stupid amount of easily accessible cash in our savings account. And we add to it every pay period.
DH does most of our bill paying and is generally more frugal than I am, but I handle most of the 401k and Roth IRA stuff. I go over our NW with him monthly, but probably need to show him something more. Just not sure what.

How does everyone set investment goals? Do you just focus on the amount you are saving, or should you also have some sort of minimum performance benchmark? It's been too long since I've analyzed the performance on my portfolios . I have goals, but the generally involve the next milestone and how much were contributing. Most of my investment account goal milestones are totally dependent on how the stock market is doing, so I can’t control it, but I still find it fun to track.

Our favorite Christmas tradition is placing cash in the employee stockings at our local taqueria, something we've done for the last ten years. We'll need to go to our bank soon to get the money which means convincing the sincere and utterly embarrassed manager that we aren't being blackmailed, held hostage or in our dotage, as required by banking regulations when seniors withdraw large sums of cash. What a great tradition, donethat!

Commenting so I remember to circle back later. And mine are more goals, not resolutions. Though I haven’t figured out what they all will he for 2020. This confuses me......I'm not sure why there is a definite anti-resolution contingent on the board - but there certainly is! Resolutions are goals you make for New Year's I equate resolution with a firm decision to do or not do something. Goals are less strict/firm, at least in my head. So no beating myself up if one of my goals is a miss.

I am going to bake 40 new baked items and cook 40 new dinner recipes. I find putting fun things that I really want to do on my resolution list makes the whole process more enjoyable, and actually achievable. On our fridge, I put a piece of paper with the goal and boxes, and when I do it, I check a box. That way I am reminded that it is something I want to do, and if I am keeping up with it all year. Love this idea! I might do something similar, but significantly less than 40. 😉

I did a bunch of Thanksgiving weekend holiday shopping. So I’ve been bring home boxes from work nearly every day last week and probably a chunk of this week as that’s where I have stuff delivered. More or less done with DH and both kids - DH will probably find something else he wants to get the kids, but that’s on him. He also started wrapping everything already, so yay!
Mom told me yesterday she wants the gift of time from us to help with a few things around her house, so that’s easy. I’ll pick up a few things for her stocking, but it’ll mostly all be consumable items as she doesn’t need more stuff.
We’re done with all of our nieces and nephews but DH’s oldest niece and her husband. DH still needs to shop for his parents and brother, and I need to shop for sister-in-law.
I also need to figure out a gift for my cousin’s husband. They are the godparents to our kids, and we’re godparents to their son. Gifts are her love language, so we still exchange gifts (I already have her figured out, and our godson). At this point I think he’s getting a bottle of liquor, I just need to figure out what kind.
I also need to get a gift for my sister’s boyfriend’s son as she informed me that he’ll be at our house for Christmas lunch.
The house is decorated.
We’re hosting Christmas lunch for my family. I have no intention of spending my Christmas morning cooking and not enjoying my family, so I’m going to do a couple kinds of soup in crockpots, veggie tray; and some other finger food/apps.
Christmas cards are ordered and should be here on Tuesday. I still need to get more stamps. DH and I will work on addressing them after the kids are in bed this week.
I’d like to do some holiday baking with the kiddos, so that’s on the list, but that may not happen until the day or two before Christmas.

That's why I just keep my house value at a conservative number and don't bother looking at the fluctuations there. Ditto.

Anyone know the signs of a UTI in a 3yo? M was grabbing her vagina through her diaper tonight at bedtime and saying it her. She asked for diaper rash spray, so I used that, but it wasn’t her butt that was hurting, so I’m wondering if it’s a UTI maybe. I don’t think I’ve ever had one, so I’m not sure what to look for. Uti usually are internal pain. But it can be hard for 3yo to communicate exactly where it is hurting. It can also be yeast infection, which is more external pain. Either should be treated by doctor. Yeast infection usually looks like a diaper rash but with red bumps, right? At least that’s what I remember from when her brother had a yeast diaper rash. She’s 90% potty trained and only wears a pull-up at night. It’s usually dry in the morning (like 4 days out of 5), so she’s not sitting around in wet diapers or anything. I’ll see how she is today and then take her in if something is still bothering.

Thing 1 had one when she was a little smaller than that. She would scream "Pee pee!" when she went in her diaper. I would take her to the doctor. I've had one and it feels like you're peeing fire. Hmmmm. No pain when she pees, so I don’t think it’s a UTI then.

My team just did our annual holiday outing today - we did ax throwing; which was a blast. We’ve previously done things like lunch out, lunch catered in, Whirly ball, Main Event, etc. I know some other teams who have done or are doing escape rooms, go carts, scavenger hunt around the city, etc.
The week before Christmas is treat week, so most of us bring in treats (usually homemade) to share with our teams. We are going themes, so one day is breakfast, one sweet and savory, one is happy hour, etc.
The company holiday party is a Saturday in January. I haven’t heard where this year’s is yet, but they rented out a local Main Event the last 2 years. It will include dinner and an open bar, plus some sort of entertainment. If it’s Main Event, we can bowl, free use of arcade games, laser tag, ropes course, etc. One year it was the College Basketball Experience. Other years it’s been a catered dinner with a band after.

I made these candy cane ornaments with pipe cleaner and tri-Star beads last year with C’s class during their holiday party. They were easy and the kids all seemed to like them. pin.it/65unwzpvb6b7at

Ditto the Sequence recommendation. Ticket to Ride is also fun! Several of the 20-somethings at work have been playing Settlers of Catan around the plan table after work recently, and all appear to be having a great time. Love Ticket to Ride! My neighbors enjoy board games and introduced me to this last Christmas. Their teenage boys really seemed to enjoy it, so I bought it for my teenage cousin this Christmas. Not long ago, I was watching a re-run of a Big Bang Theory episode from, I think, about the middle of the series run and noticed a Ticket to Ride box on the coffee table. DH’s uncle introduced us to the game 10+ years ago when we visited them and it’s been on of our favorites since. We love introducing it to new people.
