My employer does reviews in the quarter you were hired, so mine is usually in late August. Of course, ever since I became a team leader, that means I have to fill out at least one person’s review every quarter. Blech.
I don’t get to participate in the request for raises for employees (at least, not until my next promotion), but basically the team VPs put in the request for what they want for each employee being reviewed that quarter to our business unit leader. S/he reviews it with the VPs, and then sends it to our core leadership team, and they make the decision. Raise amounts depend on performance and to a lesser extent, what the market says (ie is someone being underpaid and we don’t want them to possibly leave because it’s a hot market for Engineers). I hear the raise amount in reviews and most of them this year were anywhere from 3-7%.
In addition to annual reviews, we do touchpoints the other 3 quarters. Which basically means one of the team leaders takes you to lunch or breakfast (or even happy hour for a drink) to check in and see how things are going. We usually end up talking about family and personal life and getting to know them better, but most people seem to like it. Or at least they like free lunch. 😉
Assuming an employee is doing well, we usually give some informal feedback when bonuses are handed out to thank them for the work they’ve put in this year.

I’m traveling today through Tuesday for work, so I won’t get anything done around my house. We did have someone pick up the sofa and love seat today before I left for the airport, and new ones are being delivered tomorrow.

Okay moms of girls, how do you talk to them about periods when they’re little. M is 3y4m, and has followed me into the bathroom enough to know that mommy sometimes has “red pee” as she calls it. I don’t want to discourage her asking questions as I definitely want to be able to talk to her about this stuff, especially as she gets older and heads into puberty, but not sure what age appropriate things to tell her now.

So, I received an email from the arts conservatory where Carrot takes piano lessons saying they received a grant from someone trying to encourage boys in ballet and they are offering to put him in Ballet I starting Monday for free if we want it. I'm not sure. Carrot says ok, but he wasn't super excited about it. He took a boys dance class there for a couple years and liked it, but I'm not sure I want to get sucked into another activity. I have such a hard time turning down free. I’d have a hard time turning this down even knowing it’s not really “free”, FWIW. I’d probably try it for one session and see how it goes.

TCU - if you don’t mind me asking, how on earth have you built up that much net worth at your age? I’m six years younger and net worth is only around 250k. I feel like it’s a long shot for me to get to your level by retirement age, let alone within the next decade. Hmmmm...not sure, but you did spark my curiosity, so I went and looked at some historical data in my spreadsheet. 12/2011: $485k 12/2012: $626k 12/2013: $840k 12/2014: $1.109M 12/2015: $1.108M 12/2016: $1.281M 12/2017: $1.461M 12/2018: $1.485M 12/2019: $1.865M All of the following is my random musings, complete guessing, and highly personal to our situation, so forewarned. :-) We've gotten lucky with some really good market returns. For instance, this year our 401k accounts increased more than we made in salary before taxes. Part of that is contributions/company match, but most of it is all market gains. Since circa 2015 or so, we've been maxing our 401k accounts. Before that we were probably only $1-2k away from matching each one. Not sure if I shared this above or not, but DH and I are both engineers, and work for the same company. Our employer match/profit sharing is decent, but I don't think it's crazy generous - we get 5.25% if we contribute 9%, and profit sharing is maybe another 1%. I should probably track our salary info somewhere - I think I crossed the $100k mark for the first time in 2017 (would have in 2016, but maternity leave made me miss that mark). DH crossed the $100k maybe a year or two before me. Whenever the market dives again, it's going to hurt - thankfully, we have a while before we plan to retire. The really big thing is that we live in a LCOL/MCOL area - not sure what KC technically is, but it's definitely cheaper than the costs/major large cities. We also lived in a north Dallas suburb for 3 years early in our marriage and made around a $60k profit on our house. We bought our house in Texas so that we could have the option of me staying home if I wanted to when we had kids - I ended up happy to go back to work, so we spent more on a house when we moved back to KS, but we had a hefty down payment thanks to equity in our other house that we sold, so we paid it off a few years ago. I'm not a decorating/interior design person, and DH is super handy, so we don't spend a bunch of money on extra house stuff. We *just* bought a new sofa and love seat to replace the 10-year old set that DH bought when we were dating, the oldest's bed and desk are from IKEA, the youngest's bed is a hand me down frame with new mattress that came from family, etc. Neither DH nor I are car people. We replaced DH's 10 year old car with a minivan in 2013 when his car was totaled in a multi-car pileup on a Dallas highway. We're still driving that minivan. We replaced my 12 year old small SUV with another small SUV in 2017 when my car was about to bite the dust, and will drive both until they end up costing more to repair than they are worth. I will say that there are things that I think we should spend more money on, but DH disagrees, so for now, we don't. I'd LOVE a cleaning person, but he doesn't want to pay someone for something that he can do. So, he does most of the cleaning at our house - I don't want to spend my precious free time doing that when I could be doing stuff with the kids, so I put most of it on him (besides laundry - I mostly like laundry, and a cleaning person wouldn't do that anyway, so I'm okay with that one). Also, my career is the one with more potential at this point, so it doesn't make sense for me to do it when I could be focusing on work stuff if I'm not doing family stuff. DH doesn't hire out much of anything around the house - roof work would be about the only thing, otherwise he can and will do it, which is sometimes awesome, but other times I'd rather have him doing stuff with us.

Night stand cleared off and cleaned. Ironing done. One load of laundry done.
I’m going to sell some kids’ stuff at a consignment sale in late February or March (dates haven’t been announced yet), so I’ve started sorting and tagging the clothes piece of that. It is so daunting, so trying to at least do a few things a day.
DH and I rearranged DD’s dresser, so that is more organized. She likes to pick out her own clothes (DS totally didn’t care at age 3, so this was unexpected for me) so this will make it easier for her to do so.

I'm not a heavy drinker, and on New Years I only had two shots of Patron, so I'm going to try and not worry about that. I get off of work in a few minutes and I'll be going to my local CVS to get another test, i'm not sure if I want it to be positive or negative. We’re all waiting on an update here... 😉😊

Okay, here are my (somewhat) finalized 2020 goals. The first set is the goals we came up with as a family (with mostly input from my 7yo DS).
FAMILY GOALS: *Read 100 books (this will likely be done by end of January based on how many books I read aloud to DD(3) and DS(7), but it was a huge number to DS) *Visit all parks in our city (they do a city park challenge each year that we've talked about doing, but this year we're going to do it) *Take kids to a state they haven't been to before *Take kids to a country they haven't been to before (will likely also be new to DH and I, but we haven't solidified our vacation trip location yet) *Complete 50 puzzles (again, probably too low, but DS thought it was huge) *Try 24 new recipes *Plant a vegetable garden *Donate/get rid of at least 500 items (too low, but DS was balking at this number; final count better be higher) *Do 50 random acts of kindness
PERSONAL GOALS: (FINANCIAL) *Fully fund 401k and Roth IRA accounts for DH and me *Fund kids' 520 accounts at least as much as we did in 2019 *Invest at least 25% of cash that is over and above our e-fund *Set up wills and trusts
(HOME) *Replace our love seat and couch *Select and purchase an area rug for our living room *Replace the rug under our dining room table *Set up DD's bedroom (it has leftover stuff in it - mostly DH's - but just random stuff, so we need to fully convert it to *her* room) *Hang family pictures
(WELLNESS) *4000 sit ups *4000 push ups *52 class-type workouts *Read at least 36 books (for me - fiction, nonfiction, leadership, parenting, whatever strikes my fancy)
I should probably add some more to the wellness one, but I haven't figured out what yet, so we'll see what happens.

Peter Walsh 31 Days to Get Organized Challenge
#31Days2GetOrganized2020
m.facebook.com/PeterWalsh/
Day 1 of #31Days2GetOrganized2020: Walk around your house and see where it is that clutter has built up - kitchen cabinets, closets, garages, whatever it is, make a list of those, and a mental note of the type of clutter that you see being your biggest stumbling block to being organized and clutter free.
Day 2 of #31Days2GetOrganized2020: Do you know what "Memory Clutter" is? It’s clutter we don’t want to get rid of because we’re worried we will lose the memory of we get rid of the thing. Walk around your house and make list of the memory clutter so you have a sense of how much memory clutter you have. #31Days2GetOrganized2020 #ItsAllTooMuch #LetItGo
Day 3 of #31Days2GetOrganized2020: It's great to hold onto items that evoke strong positive memories - UNLESS there's so much of it that it's crowding out you living your best life today. Understanding ZONES and LIMITS is key. #31Days2GetOrganized #ItsAllTooMuch #LetItGo
This is the day 3 recap from the video: Focus on memory clutter. You should have an idea of memory clutter in your home and what you would like to deal with it. Look at where you are going to store the memory clutter items and how much space you have to store the items, whether that is kids' photos or memorabilia or things you have inherited. Look at and designate an area or zone for storage, and how much space you have to store the items in that area/zone. Now you need to start whittling down the items to not just good but great items that bring great memories and great joy.
I'm going to throw out that so far, I don't love the 31 days challenge this year. I'm feeling uninspired and unmotivated, which bums me out because usually I like his challenges, and they're simple enough that I can fit them in, or do 2 on a one day if I miss a day.

I’m going to join this year. I’ve noticed that I’m having some on and off lower back issues that I think are related to (lack of) core strength, so I want to focus on improving my core strength. I also need to get back to working out - I did okay the first half of 2019 and then dropped off in the summer.
I would love to lose weight, but that’s not my primary focus here. Hopefully it ends up as a byproduct.

I’m in, again. We made some family goals yesterday for the year, and one of time was to declutter at least 500 items (mine was 1000, but 7yo DS was aghast at that number). It’ll probably be bumped up as we still have a ton of outgrown kids’ clothes and toys that need to find new homes.
And on that note, we met friends at the rec center indoor pool today, and I gave them 65 too small clothing items from DS that their son will be able to wear. I’ve got a couple of bags of stuff for a coworker that DD has outgrown so I need to get that stuff together and try to take it in next week when he’s back from vacation.
My mom is planning to retire this year (by end of January, actually - though she won’t set a concrete date so it won’t surprise me if it’s February), and will likely sell her house and move up here (and in with us) by 2021, so I also feel pressure to continue to purge and make sure there is space for her. And knowing I will likely have to help her declutter her house. I’m not mentally prepped for that, so I can only imagine that she isn’t either.

Here's my EOY/end of month/2019 update: Me 38/DH 43, 2 kids (7 and 3) TOTAL NW (no vehicles): $1,865,721 Retirement: $1,271,871 Stocks: $4,398 529s: $36,800 Cash: $124,702 House: $427,950 I looked at our year-end 2018 numbers, and our NW is up about 25% since then, which is crazy - so thank you, market! Our house value has increased since we bought it 5-1/2 years ago, but I'm not worried about it as we intend to live here for a long time, so maybe I'll check and update it whenever the market crashes, so I'll on paper make myself feel better when our NW drops whenever that happens.

Finally made it to shopping center with a Nike store and remembered to take the 7 pairs of beat up and outgrown sneakers from DS so I could drop them in their sneaker recycle bin.
I also have a bag of clothes in the car that DS outgrew but didn’t manage to connect with the friend we’re giving them to, so I still have those.
Need to declutter our couch and loveseat in the next week as we bought new ones yesterday and they’ll be delivered in a week. I’m going to post them for free at work on our e-bulletin board, so hopefully someone wants them and will come pick them up so I don’t have to deal with FB marketplace.

justme - We're about $60k from the ROTH income limit. I'm not actually looking to do a backdoor ROTH contributions. The reason I brought it up was the fact that some people do do the backdoor ROTHs, it makes me wonder why a ROTH would be so much better, and so, should I look at converting my traditional IRA to a ROTH if I'm going to be moving it anyway. Most people that do the back door are doing it because it's the only way to increase their ability to save in retirement accounts. Their income is too high to contribute directly to a Roth. And while they can contribute to a traditional IRA they make too much to be able to contribute to it tax-free. And since it's not tax-free they've already paid the taxes on the money so can convert it to a Roth for $0 (assuming they don't have the tax issue of also having an traditional IRA accounts). Which all gives them another $5500 in a tax-free growth account that they would not have access to otherwise. Why put $5500 in a taxable account if you could put $5500 in a tax-free account? This is us. We are over the Roth limits and max our 401k accounts. We also have no money in regular IRAs, so it’s relatively simple for us to contribute to traditional IRAs, and then immediately convert to Roth IRAs.

Had our last Christmas today with the ILs. Poor C got nailed on the side of the head right by his eye by a stool his cousin was carrying (not sure why he was carrying, but C got jailed by it). We iced it right away, but it’s definitely going to look worse tomorrow.
The gift I was most excited about giving this year was to DH’s younger brother and his son (the family that was hosting the get together). We bought them men’s b-ball tickets (and parking ) for tomorrow to their favorite college game (cleared it with SIL that they were available) and they were pretty excited.
Also, in reasons why get togethers with my ILs drive me nuts. About a week ago, SIL texted my MIL, BIL (not her husband, the 3rd bro who isn’t married) and the oldest niece (married with 2 kids, so she’s more on the adult end of things now, and not the kid end) that they were doing chili/chili dogs, and could someone please bring cinnamon rolls, veggie or fruit tray, and crackers. MIL replied she would bring cinnamon rolls, I said I’d bring a veggie tray, and crickets from the other two. SIL followed the up again two days ago to note that MIL was bringing cinnamon rolls, I was bring a veggie tray, and could someone else please bring crackers and soda. Again, crickets. So sure enough, no crackers tonight and her husband made a run to grab soda today before everyone got there. Seriously peeps; this all works much better if we all pitch in. 🤷♀️

Hang in there, mililizard! They’ll eventually go back to school...eventually! 😂🤣
I’m jealous you have pool weather! We have had unseasonably warm weather this week, so I took the kids to parks on Monday and Tuesday, and we had them play in our backyard yesterday to try to burn some energy, but it still always feels like a losing battle.

Hope everyone who was celebrating had at least an okay day. It was just the four of us at home yesterday morning, so it was fun - kids opening presents were hilarious. M is all about the present aspect - present, more present, present please kept coming out of her mouth. C got new Lego sets so he’s a happy camper.
DH got me new golf clubs - something I had mentioned back in September, so yay that he remembered. I’ll only use them a couple of times a year (for now, at least), but I have my ex-BIL’s old set (we’re both lefties, so harder to borrow/find used), and they are too tall. I keep thinking when my kids are older I may take lessons and/or join the ladies’ league on the 9 hole course near my house, so we’ll see. Probably not this year, though. DH also got me a new backpack which I want and need, so nicely done on that. I’m still using mine from grad school, so it’s 16 years old, and starting to fall apart. I’ve been loathe to replace it because it’s huge and can hold my laptop plus a ton of other crap. He said he got the biggest one he could find, and it’s purple, my favorite.
We hosted my sis, her boyfriend, my 2 nieces, boyfriend’s son, mom, ex-BIL, and aunt and uncle for lunch yesterday. It was soups and apps, so not too much work on my end other than last minute stuff trying to get the house ready. I’m assuming my sister will tell me at some point that she thinks we still hate her boyfriend (which isn’t true) and that he felt our dislike, but I did my best to be welcoming. Not sure there’s more I can do at his point, so I’m about at the “que sera, sera” attitude point on that front.

Helped Gwen shave for the first time and now I feel like crying. My baby isn't a baby anymore! 😢 Remind me again how old Gwen is? It doesn’t seem possible she’s that old!

Oy, we haven’t even had any family Christmas celebrations yet and I’ve already told DH I want to travel somewhere away just us and our kids next year for the holidays. I am at the point where I just can’t even with my sister. She’s self-centered and selfish, and when things don’t complete revolve around her and go her way, she creates drama. And seriously, can my mother actually tell people what she actually wants/thinks/feels instead of telling people what she thinks they want to hear and/or outright lying because she thinks they won’t like the truth?!?
Argh, can’t wait for Christmas Day at this point. Not.
