We took the kids to a Home Depot free build this morning. While out and about, DH got a tool to figure out which bulb was out on our prelit tree. I also got a new button and matching thread to replace a missing button on one of my cardigans, some new safety pins I needed, and grabbed a Mickey Mouse sticker pack for DD’s stocking. My kids go to home Depot nearly every month to do the kids project, and went this morning, too. We might skip next week, though, as they have sports in the morning. We have the same issue next weekend with C’s basketball game. I signed them both up, so we’ll see if we go after or not.

All the things! Not really, though I did go shopping with my mom. First stop was Home Depot to get evergreen wreaths. She likes to get one to put on my dad’s grave. I got one for me and for my sister for our front doors.
Then we went to the mall. I picked up DS a talking Boba Fett action figure and matching Mickey/Minnie/Pluto/Goofy PJs for both kids at the Disney store. Mom got her boss a calendar of stuff related to his alma mater (her annual gift to him). We both bought new jeans for my godson as that’s what my cousin suggested we get him. That was it for the mall.
We went to Target next - Mom got a new outfit for each of her 4 grandkids and her great niece and great nephew. I grabbed a couple of Disney roadster cars for DD’s stocking, makeup stuff for one of our angel tree kids, a new puzzle for DH, and a few Christmas movies.
After a break at home to play with the kids, eat lunch and nap, we al (mom, DH, both kids and me) went to Scheel’s (local sporting goods and more store) to ride the Ferris wheel and for me to get DH a Chiefs T-shirt. I also picked up a few pairs of the Darn Tough socks (I think someone here maybe recommended them - or it was somewhere else that I saw the recommendation) as they were 25% off. And I grabbed a new fleece jacket for myself as mine is from Target and is maybe 8-ish years old and really showing its wear these days.
Our last stop was Fat Brain Toys for something for DD and a couple of stocking stuffers for the kids. L

there is an interesting job op in Olathe KS.....should I apply? What would I be doing pulling up stakes for Olathe KS? idk. Yes! I live one town over from Olathe, and we are in the Olathe school district. Housing is more expensive than most of Kansas in this county, but cheaper than Chicago. It’s definitely a suburb, but you’re not that far from downtown KC, the Plaza area, Crossroads, and more.

We did family photos yesterday with my side of the family and I don't think I have ever been so upset with C. I told him that we'll probably do pictures with dh's side after nephew arrives and that I wasn't sure I even wanted him in them. I embrace the snark 99% of the time and really try to roll with it, but you can't give me 30 minutes when I have discussed expectations repeatedly? I thought I was over it, but I'm still fuming this morning and I feel like when I get the pictures it is going to come back that much more. I’m sorry. That stinks when that happens.

cktc, she may still be too young for an AG doll to dress. M got a Target Our Generation doll last Christmas from my cousin, and at 2y4m, she couldn’t dress/undress her without major help (in fairness, it was the scientist doll so some more complicated accessories). My MIL got her one for her 3rd birthday and she can mostly do it now, especially the dress that my MIL made for it (she also made M a matching dress, which is super cute).

Sounds like she’ll love it, drama!!
I have second child problems trying to come up with gifts for M this year. She is 3 and needs nothing and isn’t really into anything. She likes Minnie Mouse, so I threw that tidbit out to my SIL. She already has a Minnie Mouse costume and stuffed animal, so I don’t necessarily want to add stuff to that just because it’s Minnie. We have Little People, Duplos, and MagnaTiles, all of which she plays with, plus basement toys like a tricycle, balance bike, WheelyBug, and Plasma Car. She’ll get a few new books, and probably swimming goggles for swim lessons as she likes to wear the swim lesson place ones usually. I have a small set of colored pencils for her stocking. We are going to put the full size bed that was in C’s room in her room, so maybe Minnie sheets for that?
For reference, C is getting several Jurassic World and Star Wars Lego sets, plus a few books. I don’t care about spending equal dollar amounts at their current ages, but want to find something fun for her. I may try to take her to the local Fay Brain Toy Store this weekend to see if anything strikes her fancy.

TCU - the bolded is very similar to DH and I. I'd estimate our NW at about $500k, so we're quite a ways behind you guys - you're nailing it! Can I be you when I grow up?! My income has grown sig over the last 10 years, so I'm still adjusting and now have some catching up to do. [/p]
Hoping you don't mind a few follow up questions: - How many years has your income been at $200k? Or another way, how long have you been maxing 401k? - do you let liquid savings hoover around $100k? That's one of my next financial decisions. Balance between having enough liquid but not too much. [/p] [/quote] We’ve probably been around $180 for 3-4 years. I think when we got married in 2010 we were around $120-130k combined, but I’m honestly not sure. I have that info at home somewhere so I’ll try to remember to look sometime. We’ve been maxing 401ks for 3-4 years, but were close to it for probably another 3-4 years before that (somewhere in the $12-15k range each). Last year was the first year we did a Roth, and will keep doing that as long as the backdoor option remains an option. We also have a decent 401k match - if we each put in 9%, our employer (DH and I are at the same company) will contribute 5.15%. DH has been there 20 years now, so it’s definitely added up. We’ve been hovering around $100k for cash for 3-5 years. We did use big chunks of it at the end of the year to pay down and the. Off our mortgage, but now it’s at the point where it’ll likely just keep growing. It’s honestly too much for us IMO, but we haven’t figured out what we feel comfortable with. And I’d have to figure out what to do with it, which is the other problem. DH “lets” me take care of investing, in while he does most of the bill paying, taxes, and tracking of our spending, so I can’t decide what to do regarding a taxable account. I have maybe $5k or so in a taxable account I started 15ish years ago, but I don’t love those funds or that the platform I used has changed several times. Once I get our Roth accounts high enough, or just move enough cash over, I’ll probably use Vanguard just so I can keep all non-401k stuff in the same place. I also am hoping I’ll get promoted next year and have a large cash deposit due to become a shareholder at our employer, so I mentally have some of it earmarked for that.

I took in a bag of 50 baby/little girl clothes to a coworker - yay! And I’m working on antiheroes bag of stuff for him.
I also have a box of boys’ clothes to take to a friend with a son a couple years younger than C. We’ll drop that off the next time we go to my ILs, so likely sometime in the next couple of weeks.
DH and I went through our catch-all spot where we drop keys, mail, etc when we come in from the garage and got that organized again, so yay for some progress.

me - 38 DH - 43 Income: should be around $200k combined this year (depending on year-end bonuses) I track net worth monthly, so these are our 10/2019 numbers. No debt Savings/Checking: ~$119k House: ~428k Retirement Accounts (401ks, Roths, old 401k): ~$1.17M Brokerage Account: $4260 529 Accounts: $32k TOTAL: ~$1.75M We have 2 vehicles, but I choose not to include those as we're not likely to liquidate them, and if we did, we'd need to replace them with something else. I'll probably remember to update whenever everyone else does, and/or when we hit a milestone.

Perhaps, but these aren't during-the-act photos, they are after photos, for the most part. A couple might have been staged, many at the end weren't too terrible. I guess I just don't think it's cute when kids cause hundreds or even thousands of dollars in damage, and are sort of endangered in the process. I mean, how much of your body being covered in latex paint is dangerous? A girl my sister went to high school with used to always post pics of her boys (at the time, toddler and preschool aged) doing stuff like this. And then she’d post about wanting to watch some kids at her house for extra money. Yeah no. I get stuff happens, and I don’t/can’t watch my kids every second of every day, but stuff was always happening with her kids. Like multiple times a week. Strangely, no one that I could tell ever took her up on having her watch their kids.

Good luck, drama. I’m glad that your H is cautious and aware that he shouldn’t just say yes to whatever a doctor suggests at this point.

Got a phone call from C’s principal yesterday - that was a first. And bad mom me for my first thought being “what did C do now?!” Turns out at the table group next to his a boy was shoving his desk back and forth into another girl’s desk (and her fingers), so C got up to get the teacher’s attention. The boy got mad and threw a pencil at him, which hit him in the forehead and left a scratch. Whew. That I can handle. C was fine when we picked him up after work (he went to after school care like normal) and was excited that he’d gotten some extra computer time out of the deal.
Turns out that I know the boy’s mom - she’s from my hometown and is the cousin of one of my BFFs. The boy and C also play baseball on the same team. She messaged me to check on C before I even knew her son was the pencil thrower. So I’m happy to hear that mom and dad care and that he’s got consequences at home, because there is a kid in the class where that wouldn’t be the case.

My Dad's back surgery went well. As did a former coworker's. The key seems to be religiously following the exercise/walking instructions after surgery. If they instruct you to walk 0.5 miles 4x a day, do it. No excuses. Agreed. My mom has had 2, and she diligently did the PT, OT and whatever else they told her to do. At the end of the day, she’s still a sixty-something person with arthritis but her quality of life is so much improved. Legitimately, I can’t tell you the last time she’d come upstairs at my house (master bedroom and kids rooms are on second story, but our guest room is on main level with kitchen and family/living rooms), but a few weeks after her surgery this summer, she was climbing the stairs to help kiddos with baths, play with them, etc.

Pain is significantly improved (only 1 percocet since Friday, still taking flexeril but usually can hold out for the end of the day) but the weakness down my leg is getting worse. Walking seems to help with pain so I've done as much of that as I can, but it doesn't help with the weakness and numbness. I wasn't able to get in to see my primary doc which sucked. I don't know why I really wanted that either for confirmation that this was a good plan or an alternate path. I still have reservations about the steroid injection, but everything I've read makes it look like my best option for significant quick improvement and then I can still continue with everything else to hopefully not get back to this position. If it does help and the floating piece isn't what is causing the nerve issues right now, there is a good chance that will be absorbed on its own so I don't feel like surgery is as inevitable as it did at first. Thanks for asking. Thinking about you, and meant to share my mom’s story (or what I can recall of it) with you. My mom had a couple of falls on ice over the years, which led to back pain and other issues. Her job also probably contributed. At some point she started with steroid shots, and those worked really well for her. She got to some pnt where she decided to do surgery- I can’t recall if it was a slipped disc or pinched nerves or what. Anyway, she was happy she had it. Fast forward a few years, and she had a new issue (can’t remember what started it, but unrelated to previous surgery) and her right arm and leg were going numb/tingling feelings. She had surgery on her spine (neck area) this summer for that and it’s been amazing for her. But she didn’t jump to that right away. So all that to say, you do you and make sure you’re comfortable with the options and decisions, and know you can try something and the try something else if it doesn’t work. Also, if you end up having surgery, ask around - both of my mom’s surgeries were done by a surgeon in my area, and he was amazing. We did some research to find someone highly recommended and that specializes in what she needed. I also love that he’s a straight shooter and will tell you if something isn’t his expertise, and that the surgery isn’t a cure-all, but should fix x, y and z.

DH’s SIL and ex-SIL set the time for holiday family get togethers before I ever met him. And by set the tone, they basically decreed that my ILs never get the actual holiday at Christmas and Thanksgiving. They used to get Easter, but then the oldest BIL got divorced and doesn’t have his kids every Easter, so they get Easter on Easter every other year now.
Thanksgiving used to be at my sister and BIL’s house (20a-ish minutes away) with them, their 2 daughters, my mom, sometimes our uncle and aunt and adult cousin, and maybe a random friend or two that didn’t have family in town. Sis got divorced this year and has said she’s spending Thanksgiving with her new boyfriend, so we are either going to my mom’s house 2.5 hours away and then going down to Texas to see my Alma mater play football on the day after Thanksgiving, or we are staying here, and us and my mom are going to a friend’s house for Thanksgiving. The IL Thanksgiving will likely be hosted by us, but not sure when yet.
We used to always go to my mom’s for Christmas as my cousins in my dad’s side were usually in our hometown as well, and there was always a Christmas Eve get together at my aunt and uncle’s house. We didn’t go the last couple of years and my mom came up here, which was awesome. We went to Christmas Eve mass, then dinner and the Candlelight Christmas Eve (Protestant) Service at my sister’s church, and then back to our house where my kids woke up in their own beds on Christmas morning. Sis and family would come over at some point and hang for a bit and exchange gifts. Not sure what is happening this year, except I’ll be home, and my mom will be staying with us for the holidays. I haven’t heard the specific IL plans as it depends on when BIL has his kids, but my guess is that it’ll be the weekend after Christmas. My SIL will probably host, and that’s only about 40 minutes away.
I do miss that we don’t see my cousins that we basically grew up with on the holidays anymore. And my aunt and uncle sold their house and moved to the town where one of their sons lives, so I don’t see them when I’m visiting my mom either. But it is what it is. We see one of my cousins a couple of times a year when we go to her house or they come to ours, so I’ll take it.

M is on day 3 of some random fever/virus that was going around daycare last week. Naturally she was fine over the weekend/last Friday when we had the day off, but I got a call in Monday morning that she had a fever. Fingers crossed she can go back tomorrow as she’s going to be really upset if she doesn’t get to take her costume and participate in the Halloween party.
Also hoping that C doesn’t catch it.

My two are 4y2m apart in age and I love it. C’s entire world was rocked with M arrived, but he never took it out on her - he adored her from day 1, and any anger and frustration was directed at DH and I. Kiddos are 7 and 3 now and little sis thinks big brother is the best, and vice versa.

Hi, Firebird! Glad to hear you’re doing well!
My son C is 7 and into reading, Legos and all the sports. I have a 3yo daughter M now. DH and I both still work for the same company, and are back living in our home state and live relatively near-ish both of our families.
