"Food too much. Adult beverages too many." This is the story of my life lately. 😔. And I really want a snack and adult beverage! Holding off, and sipping my tea. Getting back on the wagon. Measurements done (embarrassing), and trying to sign into my old MFP account. Can't seem to get my password, so I guess I'll make a new one and start fresh. My step counter broke. Thinking about getting a new one. Was supposed to get one for my birthday/mother's day, and that never happened. Any suggestions on ones that aren't too expensive, but not too cheap, either? This may be more than you were thinking about spending, but I love my Garmin VivoActive watch. I have the 3 series, but it looks like they are selling the 4 now: buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/643399/pn/010-02172-21It has more functionality than I need, but I regularly use the step counter, stair flights counter, stop watch, watch, and the connection to my phone to vibrate when I get phone calls and other notifications.

I like the jewelry idea.
If you wanted to do something to help encourage her to go to college, what about paying for her to take the SAT or ACT?

Our enrollment was last week, and we ended up opting to send C (turned 8 this summer/starting 3rd grade). Our youngest is still in daycare and while DH and I are still WFH, we’ve been told our return to office date will be early September, the same day C starts school.
When I picked in person, I was (naively) assuming the kids would likely all be remote at some point. However, our district just sent out more info today, and based on our county health departments plan and recommendations, elementary kiddos in the in person option will be full-time at school regardless of whether cases in our county make us green, yellow or red. The middle and high schools, though, will be all in person, hybrid, or all remote depending on cases in the county.
Our revised school calendar was just approved by the board tonight (originally was slated to start school next week, but pushed back to after Labor Day). Our school day starts earlier than normal, and a couple of days off were switched to virtual learning days, but most of our breaks and holidays are the same. Which annoys me, but probably shouldn’t. It seems like we could move most of the teacher in service days to before school starts since we’re starting later in my district.
I feel for teachers. Our teachers seem to be finding out information at the same time the parents/public find out, so they’re scrambling as well. And I can’t imagine knowing I have to go to work with so many germy kids each day. It seems like a lose-lose situation for everyone.

All the feels about return to school. I just enrolled C this weekend. We opted for in person as that’s his preference, he definitely will learn better, and right now, DH and I are supposed to return to our office the same day school starts, so we won’t be home with him and I can’t leave him alone.
That said, I suspect we won’t be in school for long, if at all, based on cases in my area. Which also means work will probably push back the return to office date, but so far they haven’t. So who the heck knows. I also have feelings of guilt that I’m possibly endangering my kid, the teachers/staff at the school because more in person kids means more in person teachers, and that maybe we should just figure out a way to suck it up and do remote learning. Argh.
And also, daycare sent a message this weekend - the county health department updated their guidelines and now C has to wear a mask at daycare (all school aged kids do, but not the younger kids). He is fine with it, so that’s good, but I was selfishly hoping he’d get a couple more weeks of somewhat normal before school starts next month. It also pushes up my timeline to find the kid some more masks. We definitely need one for each weekday plus 2-3 extras.

OMG I'M GOING TO KILL HIM! Apparently him eating my food is not comparable because he has no income and I have a responsibility to feed my kids.
Not if he’s 18. He can feed himself. And good luck, MPL. I’d also be feeling homicidal rage in your shoes.

Any updates for the 2020 Healthy Lifestyle Discussion?
Anyone setting August goals? July was not my best month - between being less motivated and the heat/humidity levels for most of the month making me not want to walk outside, my steps were way down. August is a new month, and we got a break in the weather, so took long walks with the family yesterday and today. I've also realized (or admitted...because I really already knew this) my core is very weak, how I sit while WFH doesn't help, and I'm going to end up with some back problems if I don't do anything about it. So, I found some beginner core moves to try, and my goal is to do them at least 5 days/week. I'm hoping I can do them during the day when I get a break between meetings, and don't end up doing them right before bed like last night and tonight, but as long as they get done, I'll call it a win.

Second, I thought your husband was in education like you...maybe I just made that up in my head. I'm so glad I'm not the only who thought that. I could have sworn her husband was in education as well. And also, whine away, Chloe!

We're up about 5% over June - our combined retirement accounts went up over $90k since last month, which blows my mind. We are now back up over where we were in December 2019/January 2020. Maybe there's a chance after all we hit the next big milestone by the end of the year.

I’m doing some research but also figured I’d ask here. Anyone know anything about Roblox? Okay for an 8yo boy (heading into 3rd grade) to play? C asked about getting it - a kid at daycare with him this summer has it and let’s C play/watch him play some times when they can use devices during the younger kiddos’ nap time.
I will also add that we are not gamers unless it’s a board game or card game. We don’t have any gaming systems, and while we have an iPad that he can occasionally use, it doesn’t have games on it other than some learning games, PBS Kids app, etc.

Sorry about the lack of sleep Theo. Sadly, I can now relate. I've just been wandering around the house at night, cleaning and trying to remember what I'm doing. I get a few hours of sleep but not an awful lot. My BIL is taking me to Lowes to look for a new toilet and kitchen faucet. I think at some point in a couple months, we're going to start making lists of things that need to be fixed. Probably first on the list will be replacing doors. I had to take them off for DH's wheelchair but now I need to put them back on. Need a whole new bathroom door frame as I had to rip that out completely.
I am so sorry about your DH, empress. Thinking about you.

In a sign of the times, I felt like I hit the jackpot this morning when Sam’s Club had the disinfectant wipes for purchase - now I have some to send to school, assuming it’ll still be in person!

Ditto the recommendation to get monitors and a keyboard and mouse for home - plus a chair! It waited for almost 2 months to get a chair and I should have gotten it the first week I was home.

How are his siblings doing? Does he still see them?

Wow. I think our governor would love to say 100% online, but there are so many that don't want that either. My money is on him announcing hybrid with districts given leeway to do online if they want. Ditto. I’m pretty sure our governor would have loved to say 100% online - she was the first governor to cancel in person school for a state for the remainder of the school year back in mid-March, but she’s a democrat governor in a red state with a red legislature. After she shut down in person schools and closed in-person dining, bars, etc and made the mandate to WFH unless you’re an essential work, the legislature went and stripped her of some of her power in May or June. I think her moving to delay the start of school by 3+ weeks was a compromise move on her part in the hopes that would be amendable to the conservative crazies in our legislature and not have them override it.

In a first for me, I just contacted my state Board of Education rep (as well as the rest, because there aren’t that many) to encourage them to support (and not override) our governor’s executive order to delay the start of school until after Labor Day. I want my kid to be able to attend in-person school, darn it, but right now our state has shifted to a “red” state for new COVID-19 cases (based on growth rate, not sheer numbers). If they start next month, it’s just going to cause a ton of clusters and outbreaks. Either way, I doubt my district starts before Labor Day at this point because they’ve delayed school registration again, but I figured I should probably make my opinion known to my elected rep.
They are meeting tomorrow, so we’ll see what they decide. I know some of them will be voting to override, so we’ll see what the vote ends up being. In true hypocrisy, though, the Board meeting is a virtual one, so while it’s not safe for them to meet in person, at least some of them think it’s okay for kids and teachers and staff to go back to school.

Our governor announced on Wednesday that schools can’t start up again until at least after Labor Day (for reference, our first day was supposed to be August 12, which is about the normal range for the state). Our school district was set to approve and announce the new guidelines and regulations in effect for the fall (as well as what was going on with the all in-person and all virtual learning options) on Thursday/Friday, but the governor’s announcement put all that on hold (she’s also releasing more info next week).
I do think it’s a good thing to wait a few more weeks, but I’m also frustrated that it probably won’t give teachers and staff any more time to prepare as the school districts will just delay publishing their guidelines and regulations. I’m also grateful C is at daycare with M this summer so we don’t have to cobble together another month of childcare - he can just stay there a few extra weeks.

I hope you like your new area, startsmart! I grew up about 2.5 hours from KC in the SE corner of the state, have family in Wichita and a couple other small towns in central Kansas, and generally love the whole area, but there are definitely some things that drive me batty about it.

Debthaven - the new house is in Kansas! I’ll be 36 this year and it’s all still very surreal to me 😃 of course the house does need work which I am VERY excited to do but I have a lot of dreams and plans. I am super behind on this thread so you might answer it later, but do you want to share where (or PM)? Several of us are in the KC area on both sides of the state line (I’m on the Kansas side). We’ve talked about a meetup before - another person in the area might be the kick in the pants we need to make it happen once we can all safely socialize again.

Actually put that out there. It would be great to form a cohort of sorts where he could have interaction as well. I've heard of families that agree to distance together basically. Your own micro/school cyber pod. Agreed! If we end up at home, my preference is to find a few other classmates to do this with. 4-5 kids total would be awesome because we could rotate weeks or days at different houses, making it easier on all of the parents. DH and I could manage 1 week every month or 1 day/week with 4-5 kids much easier than we could fill-time with our kid since we also have to work.

Can't you just cover it up with a bandaid? Or will she pick through that as well? She takes the band aid off. I got a giant box of them but can't hover over her making her put a new one on all the time. She's going to have to motivate herself at some point to not pick. It'll heal it's just not healing the way you would expect if you didn't know she was picking the scab for three weeks. Knowing she picked it makes a heck of a lot more sense. For C’s legs, we had to put the medical tape on the bandages and wrap it around his leg. It made it more difficult to get off, so he’d usually leave it on. If you zoom in on his ankles, you can see the tape wrapped around his bandages. We did go with the beige medical tape so it somewhat blended in.

Our before/after school care people did their signup in May. I made sure we were signed up because options are a good thing. Ditto for us. I took a gamble and assumed we’d still need before/after care.

Carter had something similar on both of his legs in first grade. You can see in his first day of school pics from that year the big bandages we had to place on them with some sort of prescription medicated cream. The doctor thought it was eczema (which he’d never had or shown signs of next), but once the dry itchy skin there started, he kept scratching and picking at them. They finally cleared up with medication (and cooler weather as it was harder to scratch with pants on), but nothing I tried to bribe or motivate him with worked.

I’ve know some people who has their kids in these things and yes, it is hugely expensive. Multiple costumes per show, coaches, someone to do hair and make up, then the classes on the side so your kid develops a talent. If your kid is 100 percent enthused with this and won’t be crushed if not picked to be the grande supreme that’s one thing, but in a lot of instances I think the moms are living vicariously through their kids, and the kid is miserable. DH and I used to watch "Toddlers and Tiaras" and eventually couldn't take it anymore. I know the OP asked about an older age group but it was the same thing. Wigs, spray-on tans, "flippers" to put over less-than-perfect teeth... although there's always a nod to "talent" I think it sends a very bad message about perfect physical appearance being the be-all and end-all. Can they even do these pageants in the era of COVID-19? No idea if they can or not but I’m sure I’ll find out through the family grapevine! The girl just finished middle school, and I think it’s at least partially driven by her, but not 100% sure. It especially blows my mind because she’s a twin, and the money could go a long way towards college for her and her twin brother. Oh well, not my money, not my problem.

Anyone have any knowledge or insight into the teen and pre-teen beauty pageant world? A family member has been selected as her state’s pre-teen winner and “gets” to go to nationals to compete. There is no way the prize (aka “scholarship” money as they call it) comes remotely close to what they have to spend to compete, right? Between a pageant coach, apparel, photography, travel and more, I can’t wrap my brain around this at all.
I know her parents are reaching out to local businesses about sponsorships and I’m sure we’ll be asked at some point. I’d much rather give money for a college fund than this, so we’ll be passing, but I know nothing about this world so I’d see if anyone else had some knowledge.
