This week has been brutal for me - it's been soooo cold here, I haven't left the house, and want to just snuggle on the couch with a blanket and read books to the kiddos. Needless to say, I didn't meet my step goal most days, but at least did get out and shovel snow one day. Yesterday, I kicked my rear in gear, and got on the treadmill after dinner. Moving on - will plan to do so this evening as well, and since we're now (barely) above freezing, I'm going to take the kids to the zoo tomorrow so I can get my walk on.

Things aren't going well over here. My 8 year old pitched a fit about doing school work yesterday like she does every day and I just lost i Big hugs. We were only hybrid for 3 weeks at the beginning of the year and I was more than ready to send my 8yo back to the classroom full-time.

How’s everyone holding up? C was out of school last Thursday, Friday and Monday due to parent-teacher conferences and then President’s Day, and then yesterday and today due to weather/rolling blackouts (we are in the greater Kansas City area). We kept M home on Monday and Tuesday from daycare, but DH was ready to take her back today, LOL. So he drove her in and will work from the office so he can pick her up.
We lost power for about 30 min yesterday, but that was it, and was clearly for the rolling blackouts, so it wasn’t too bad. I feel for my friends in Texas - the stories, FB posts, etc I am seeing from there are crazy.

We had a crazy gorgeous day yesterday for February in Kansas, so we took advantage and went for a walk before dinner with DH and the kids. Today I had a mostly meeting-free afternoon, so I took a break and got some time in on the treadmill (yesterday’s weather disappeared quickly as we had snow this morning and cold temps again).

Our house is totally feeling the winter boredom. We're watching way too much tv. Any suggestions? Jigsaw puzzles? Board games? Going outside even if it’s only for 15 minutes? M always wants to go outside, and I’ve noticed that if we’re out so she can ride her scooter, C will often end up joining us on his bike. There’s a cul-de-sac near us that they can just ride around in, so even if we only spend 15 minutes out there, we all feel better. Do you have a basement? Any space for a ping pong table? You can do that with two people or four.

Did okay last week. Not a ton of outside time, but did use the treadmill a few times. And I am working from home today, DH left with the kids decently early enough, so I actually walked on the treadmill before I started work. The kids have swim lessons tonight, so it likely wouldn’t have happened tonight, so I’m glad it all worked out today.

I just signed C up for several camps through our county parks & rec department yesterday. And his cousin who is one year younger is going to do all but none with him. I’m not looking forward to playing chauffeur with DH for him as no two weeks are the same, and some are all day, some are 6 hours, and some are 2-3 hours, but I’m just reminding myself it’s short term.
He’s going to do an outdoor summer escapade at a park one week, a nature & science camp at a different park for a week, NERF battles one week (that one is only 2 hrs/day but he really wanted to do it), an art camp, fencing camp, and a Code Ninjas create camp.
That covers every week but one until the second half of July. We’re still trying to figure out a vacation for this summer; so once that is done, I’ll see if we can put him in anything else to cover another week or two. I’m okay if he’s home for a couple of weeks, but I also want him to get out of the house soon.
Almost everything I signed him up for has a minimum age of at least 6, but some 7 and 8, so I have no idea what we’ll do next year as M will need care as well, but doesn’t turn 6 until the end of the summer. Oh well, I’ll worry about that later.

January 2021 Update:
Checking/Savings: $164k House: $428k Retirement: $1.614M Brokerage: $4.9k 529s: $55.5k
Total NW: $2,267,152
We're up a whopping 0.54% since last month...we'll see what the stock market does this year!
As usual, the list above excludes our cars, which are worth around $30k combined, but I leave them out because we're unlikely to sell, and need them to get to/from work, kids schools, etc. in the land of suburbia.
Notes for me to look back on - we started a major home improvement project this month to finish out most of our unfinished basement, so lots of money has been spent at the home improvement store. DH is doing the work himself, so labor costs are low (though this will also mean that at some point we'll get very annoyed with each other...more than likely more than once...), but the materials are still not cheap. We also decided not to send DS to the daycare's summer program, so I had to prepay for a bunch of summer day-camp stuff for him this month for the first time, so his summer care is mostly paid for, minus a couple weeks where I'm still ironing out possible vacation plans.

So I got my lab results yesterday. Results were not good. My BP is up, my cholesterol is up, my fasting sugar was 116, my vitamin D and B12 were very low. My doctor offers group weightloss coaching so I'm signed up for that as losing weight should help. My peloton is being delivered this weekend. I can do this. I have to do this. You can do it! Re: low B12. Any chance you have pernicious anemia? I was diagnosed with that when I was 18 - basically my body doesn’t easily process B12, especially from non-food sources, so mine is treated with B12 injections. When my B12 levels are low, I am very fatigued, and can see an almost immediate difference after a B12 shot.

For fine point, I like the Staedtler fine liners as well, or the Sharpie pens. thanks tcu! do the sharpies have that hideous sharpie smell, or just more of a regular marker aroma? I don’t notice any smell with the Sharpie pens. These are the ones I have. Do you have Roth IRAs? I would do backdoor Roths for you and your spouse, and you can fund them for 2020 (if you haven't yet) as well.
I'd probably invest the rest, since your house is so far away from being paid off, or put part toward the house and the rest to investments.
Are you going to need to pay for college, or is that already taken care of?
ETA - ignore the college question, saw the answer above

I had a couple of failure days as far as steps and movement go (and food choices, if I’m being honest), but did manage to buy a Kettlebell on Saturday and used it yesterday for a short workout after walking on the treadmill, so yay for small things.

Which tip thickness do you have? I love the Medium version of flair pens, but I hate the fine point version. For fine point, I use staedtler fine liners. For fine point, I like the Staedtler fine liners as well, or the Sharpie pens.

Popping in to say hi and awesome work everyone! I traveled last week and have been swamped, so not a ton getting done at home, but actually at least mostly keeping up with the normal mail/laundry/dishes (well, DH does those)/cooking/grocery stuff.
We plan to finish our basement this year, and DH is ready to go now (he's doing the bulk of the work), so he's been on a roll going through our basement and getting rid of stuff (empty boxes, misc toys the kids don't use, etc), and nagging me to list what we can give away or sell on FB. I've gotten a few things posted, but have more to do, so hoping to get through all of that this week.

Hallmark? Geez who ISN'T donating in corporate America? Unfortunately money talks more than votes. Capitalism may be the one to save the day. Right?!? That one surprised me, but I don't know why.

Checking in! I ended up hitting my step goal either by walking on the treadmill or dragging the family out for a walk every day but Friday last week, so I’m counting that as a win! And Friday I was just tired and done from a crazy week at work, so I couldn’t motivate myself.
Weekend was okay - time spent outside with the kids to no actual workout, but kept busy with lots of steps chasing them around at the park one day and on a walk while the little rode her a otter the other day.
I’m traveling today/tomorrow, but having to walk around a small warehouse site, so did okay with steps today and hopefully the same tomorrow.

C is only 9, but generally never wants to shower unless it’s his idea. When I think he stinks, I tell him he smells and needs to shower. And then he can’t do ‘x’ until he’s bathed. Once in a while he’ll negotiate and I let him win - like sometimes he wants to shower in the morning instead of at night, so I say yes, and so far he’s followed through and showered in the morning when he says he will. Yesterday M (4) wanted a shower instead of a bath, which meant that is what C wanted as well, so it took no convincing on my part, which was a nice change.

oped, did you figure out if you can upload the outside hour sheets to the site? or do you mind emailing them (if you're still okay to share them)?
So far I've managed to get the kids outside every day this year except 1, and it was raining all day that day - I have zero desire to go outside when it's rainy and cold, so that one wasn't happening, plus I didn't get M picked up and home until after dark, and DH had C at basketball practice by then. Regardless, we've been outside more at this point this year than we were at the same point last year. :-)

Going to post to try to keep my motivation up - played outside in the remnants of snow with the kids for 45 minutes after work (not super active, but I wasn’t sitting down reading/playing board games/whatever), and walked for 30 minutes on the treadmill right before the kids went to bed.

31 Day Challenge www.frugalcouponliving.com/declutter-your-home-checklist/Day 1 - Holiday Decorations and Cards. Day 2 - Kitchen Cupboards Day 3 - Kitchen Drawers Day 4 - Fridge and Freezer Fridge and Freezer didn’t happen as I took the kids outside to play, and then went and saw a local Christmas light show before it ends for the season on Wednesday. That task is probably one I’ll save for the weekend, and get DH to tackle it with me.

You can find gym equipment now. I got a weight set at Sam's. That's the only set with a rack I have been able to find. I also have a cart full of accessories in my Walmart cart. I also got a treadmill and spin bike at Academy that is in your neck of the woods. Now that the initial shortage has passed and gyms are open, you can find stuff to workout at home. Especially this time of year. Thanks! We have a treadmill, but I will definitely check out Academy or Dick’s for some kettle balls to try the video mililizard posted a link for below.

31 Day Challenge www.frugalcouponliving.com/declutter-your-home-checklist/Day 1 - Holiday Decorations and Cards. Day 2 - Kitchen Cupboards Day 3 - Kitchen Drawers I went through 5 of our kitchen drawers today, and two more cabinets. I purged a few items, so yay, and wiped down all of the drawers and cabinets that I went through (with DH’s help).

I'm struggling with goals - I know I need to lose weight, but for that, need to focus on eating better/being more active. And I hit a big milestone birthday this year, and in general am realizing that I'm starting to get aches and can tell the next day if I overdo something. Which all leads to needing to be more active/fitter/everything so I can live an active and healthy lifestyle and keep up with my kids. Sigh.
We have a gym at work that had great classes, pre-Covid. It's unfortunately still closed, I'm guess through the summer, and that was the easiest way for me to fit in a workout because it was at work. I definitely walked a ton more last year, so I need to keep that up. And maybe do some bodyweight stuff to help with strength? Anyone have something they do at home that they love? We don't have any weights, but I'm not opposed to getting some handheld weights, kettle balls, or medicine balls (or something like those), assuming they can be found now.
All of that to say, I'm feeling okay about the start to the new year. We got snow on New Year's Day, so we all went outside and DH and I shoveled while the kids played. While DH finished up, I pulled the kids around our yard on a sled, so was decently active (way more so than the past on that holiday). We also walked to the closest hill of any decent size, which is only a half mile, but played in the snow and climbed up and down the hill several times. And repeated the trip to the sledding hill again today, complete with pulling the kids part of the way on the sidewalks still covered in snow.

I do a fair amount of reading for work, so when I do off hours reading I tend to do more light fiction and few theological books. My goals this year: Recreational reading: Finish the William Kent Krueger series. Murder / mystery series. Setting is on the Iron Range of MN so familiar with the territory. I'm on book 11 of 17 right now. Start the series by C.J. Box. Similar type of series. Setting is in Wyoming. Autobiographies: Recently bought Becoming by Michelle Obama and A Promised Land by Barack Obama. Becoming was my favorite read in 2019 - I hope you love it! I'm reading A Promised Land now and it's long. Really long. Interesting, but whoosh - starting my year with that is going to make me question if I'm going to hit my reading goal this year. I started it on my Kindle shortly before Christmas and I think I'm up to 40% now - and I go back to work tomorrow, so I will have even less time to read. That said, It's due back to the library soon, so I need to power through. And not turn on the wifi on my Kindle until I'm done so I don't lose it and have to wait on it to become available again.

Okay, I think I finally have my 2021 goals more or less figured out. And posting here so I can check in later.
Family: 500 hours outside Visit all of our city’s parks Read to kids 325 days (or more) Vacation/explore someplace new
Home: Finish the basement Plant a vegetable garden Replace rug Paint M’s room Purge at least 500 items
Financial: Max 401k accounts and Roth IRAs for DH and me Find kids’ 529 accounts to amount we get a state income tax deduction for Set up wills/trust Don’t screw up 2021 taxes (they will significantly change for me in 2021 once I purchase shares in my employer’s S-Corp, so I will have to use a CPA for the first time) Increase our charitable giving
Personal: Read at least 36 books Increase average number of steps per day over 2020 Send at least 40 letters of appreciation to people who have positively impacted my life by my 40th birthday this summer
