I actually have only heard from DNephew1 since dad got really bad. DNephew3 has not responded to text messages. Have not heard from sister since the discussion about letting me know if she is writing checks. Feeling totally alone except for the people here. You will NEVER be alone here.

Goals for 12/8-12/14 12/8- No Spend. -- H had a coupon for McDonald's and brought home frappes for us before we went to volunteer at DS1s school. $4.11 12/9- No Spend. -- Accomplished! 12/10- It's a fundraiser night for DS1's grade at our McDonalds. Will spend $ for dinner, budgeted expense. -- Accomplished. 12/11- No Spend. -- Accomplished. 12/12- No Spend.-- Spent $4.11 on coffee today to get me through an entire school day of elementary age Christmas shoppers. 12/13- No Spend. -- I spent 8+ hours at DS1's school coordinating and setting up the Christmas movie night (complete with Santa) because nobody volunteered to help. It was myself, H, and two of my fellow PTO officers running the entire event. Needless to say, it kicked my butt and I caved and sent H to Taco Bell for dinner after. Spent $28.00. 12/14- No Spend. -- Spent $4.11 on coffee at McDonalds today.

My dad

Post by nikiz628 on Dec 9, 2019 15:34:58 GMT -5
When my dad began hospice, the hospice rep who came to his nursing home to set up his care explained to me what to expect. She said agitation in various degrees is very typical as various organ systems and brain functions start to shut down at the end of life. If not addressed, the agitation will transition to seizures and spasming, which are painful. According to the hospice rep, the agitation and seizures are an indication that the patient is close to death. Low doses of drugs are given to relieve the discomfort the patient is experiencing as those things are happening. This is the way it happened when mom had in home hospice. They did increase the dosages as her pain increased. Mom went in to a coma like existed that lasted about 36 hours. The hospice nurse said if she became agitated to give her one of the meds. That never happened so we didn't need to do that for her. Dad is doing much better since he isn't feeling so much physical pain. In the hospital, until it was determined what had happened to cause his blindness, they wouldn't give him pain meds. We are told he has constant pain now in his head. Better to keep him as comfortable as possible, imo. This is how it was when my grandma went into hospice care at home (cancer). She was on a morphine pump that administered on a timer, but we were able to hit a button for an extra boost at any time if she seemed in any discomfort. Between that and the ativan, she was as comfortable as she could be.

One thing I ordered for myself was probably a mistake price on Amazon. It was an Echo Dot and an Echo Show that was on sale for less than Amazon has been selling the Echo Show for. The Dot arrived today but the Show won't be here until after Christmas. It's all because of the sale and no big deal since it's for me. We have both devices and love them! I hope you enjoy them!

This weekend my plans are to finish up some homemade Christmas gifts and finish wrapping. I am *this* close to being completely finished with Christmas gifts.
Also, to enjoy a very low key, wear my sweats all day weekend. The week ahead is CRAZY busy, so I need to mentally prepare.

Goals for 12/1-12/712/1- No Spend -- Accomplished! 12/2- No Spend -- Accomplished! 12/3- DS1 has a dr. appt in Indy, so it will be a spend day (lunch). I want to stop by IKEA again for some Christmas shopping while we are over there. -- We had a fun family day in Indy (and DS's appt went good- it stemmed from his femur fracture last year, so getting good news was a relief for this mama). We spent $28.11 on food. And $24.31 at Target on some clearanced out Cubs shirts ($5.98 each, regularly $20 a piece!) We also spent money at IKEA, most of it was Christmas gifts so I won't count that as spending, but I did buy myself a succulent and the boys got chocolate bars at the checkout- so I will count $6.39 towards "non essential spending"- Total for the day: $58.8112/4- No Spend. -- Accomplished! 12/5- No Spend. -- Accomplished! I did treat myself to a nice big coffee at Starbucks while I was out running errands, but I paid with a gc I received for my bday! 12/6-No Spend, minus budgeted bi-weekly grocery trip -- Spent $5.09 on drinks at the gas station. 12/7- No Spend. -- Our friends invited us to go bowling with them and their kids (DS1s best friend). We spent $31.67 for a few hours of bowling and some drinks. Earlier in the week, we had a decent day of weather so I was able to clean up our garage enough to get our outdoor stuff stored away for winter. In the process, 15 broken toys/random junk items were tossed!

|
NikiZ628 11/30/19 $3,695.44 (Goal $7,300 WIRS1)
This will be my last savings update for the year. We obviously tapped in to that EF a lot this year, with H changing jobs and some medical bills I incurred. I am very happy it was there to keep us from leaning on credit cards. Now, it's time for us to look ahead to 2020 and get our savings goals listed out! I'll post them here once we finalize!

Adding up all of our non-budgeted spending for November.
Total Spent In November $305.04
It's not a horrible total but it was higher than October... so clearly we failed a little at our "no spend November" challenge. I say a little because it's not a total fail- we are learning and monitoring where are money is going and that can never be a fail in my opinion.
Moving on to December, going to try a No Spend month again!

What a pretty house nikiz628 ! That's going to be a fabulous space! What are you planning to use it for? It’s just going to be a bonus/play room for the kids. We are going to put a sleeper sofa and tv up there for their gaming systems. Their toys. And a table and chairs for crafting/board games.

Re: Retirement.
I am 33, as is H, and he JUST NOW has a 401k. We were so giddy to see it had $350 in it when we received our last statement. Getting retirement savings started has been a yearly goal for the past few years, but it just never came to be. Partly because his old job didn't offer anything, partly because we are very "retirement dumb" as far as understanding options/paths/etc, but mostly because life has just made it harder to throw money that way with so many pressing things needing our financial attention RIGHT. THIS. MOMENT. The only contributions going in to his 401k right now are the 3% of his pay that his employer contributes. Once we get a better routine/budget with his bi-weekly pay schedule, we plan to throw more in to it. (Sigh. He's been at the job since 7/3 and this bi-weekly pay schedule is still throwing me. I guess that's what happens after having weekly pay for 15 years straight haha!)
I know we are "young" but I still feel like we are way behind in the retirement game, compared to our friends our age.

We've made A LOT of progress on the attic to bonus room conversion in the past two weeks. The floors are in, so we no longer have to tight rope walk the joists lol. H cut a giant hole into our roof and built a nice shed dormer to open up some headspace/get us full sized windows for more natural light. (He also installed a small window on the front of our house in a preexisting peak. It looks adorable). All but 1.5 walls are framed. Most of the electrical is roughed in. He has to relocate our old vent pipe tomorrow and then he can finish framing the last of the walls. After that, he will finish up the electrical and we can start installing insulation. Then drywall.. drywall finishing..lighting..paint..carpet.. haha. We definitely aren't approaching the finish line yet but the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter. I will post some progress pics in a moment!

So dad doesn't want to move. From researching, appears he can't be forced without going to court. He came to the birthday party. He is much weaker than he was last Friday. I've had no sleep. I have told sister to text me each week with what he needs. That is all I can do. Niece said the dementia is really bad. Can't go back in time when he might have understood. He couldn't answer the questions director of assisted living asked him. They showed him the apartment. He was too weak to walk back to his place so he did use a wheel chair. I feel totally helpless. Big hugs. I am so sorry you’re feeling helpless. ❤️ What a system failure that you can’t make him move, even with medical professionals recommending it. What are your sister’s thoughts on his refusal?

No Spend November! Our "guidelines" for the month are: Christmas purchases are allowed (inevitable, and mostly budgeted). Obviously grocery/household items are also allowed. And our weekly dinner date with friends ($1 Tacos on Taco Tuesday at our local Mexican restaurant- very cheap and so fun!) Everything else will be categorized as No Spend. Goals for 11/17-11/2311/17- No Spend. --Accomplished. 11/18- No Spend. --Accomplished11/19- No Spend, minus our weekly taco tuesday friend dinner. -- Skipped dinner, No spend!11/20- No Spend, other than budgeted grocery trip.-- H and the boys made a Menard's run for reno supplies and they talked him into stopping at a new little coffee shop near the store. They brought me home a mocha frappe so I couldn't be too mad- the price tag for everything was a bit WHOA though- $24.22. 11/21- No Spend-- Accomplished! 11/22- No Spend-- We were kid free for a few hours tonight, so we treated ourselves to dinner. $23.72 spent. H bought his lunch today, so $13.18 spent on that. Total for today: $36.9011/23- No Spend -- The new coffee shop got us again haha. H made a joke that his hardware store trips are getting more expensive since he drives right by it. I told him he's going to have to work on his willpower and ignore the call of the caffeine. $15.99Spending Tracker: 11/1 $0.00 11/2 $10.46 11/3 $0.00 11/4 $0.00 11/5 $0.00 11/6 $0.00 11/7 $34.88 11/8 $97.00 11/9 $0.00 11/10 $16.00 11/11 $0.00 11/12 $0.00 11/13 $8.46 11/14 $0.00 11/15 $17.48 11/16 $27.54 11/17 $0 11/18 $0 11/19 $0 11/20 $24.22 11/21 $0 11/22 $36.90 11/23 $15.99 11/2411/2511/2611/2711/2811/2911/30

Shoutouts Part 2 of 2: nikiz628 Good work covering your "oopsie spends". Congrats to you and your boys on their savings. How old are the boys? I noticed you do a great job of using so many of the threads available on WIR...getting organized, no spend, debt race, savings race. You are building some serious skills here DS1 is 9 and DS2 is 4. And thank you, I just love it over here in WIR land

This really isn't an appropriate thread to post this, Artemis Windsong . Go over to the Politics board if you want to talk about the Clintons. Over here, we are all just regular people trying to improve our place in the world. This has really angered me. This. I read the post several times trying to figure out WHY it was posted on this thread/board. I thought maybe I missed a point in it. Nope.

The changes that I made to my insurance policies resulted in my USAA-controlled automatic payment getting deleted for November which resulted in a late fee of $15. I just got off the phone with USAA, requesting they reverse the late fee and they did. My December payment is going to be twice as much as a normal payment but that'll make January's payment that much less. In other news, I'm sick--a cold or something. Time for rest and lots of water. Hope you’re feeling better soon! ❤️

Made the mistake of calling my sister. She doesn't think dad will go to assisted living or a nursing home and she isn't going to make him. I told her that the facility where he lives can tell him that he can't live in independent living any more and it may take the director saying it. I may still have to call DHS on my own sister. Ugh. She’s making everything so much harder than it needs to be. My continued apologies on her behalf, because you’re doing amazing.

TheOtherMe- I am just catching up here from the last few days. I am so sorry to read about your dad. I want to echo what others have said about the amazing job you have done advocating and loving your dad. I've said it before, and I will continue to say it- he is SO lucky to have you. Sending you all of the love and light.
