Update: 7 NS and 8 CS day = 15 NS/CS daysSpent most of today at home. Yesterday was a spend day -- nothing major -- just a little here and a little there. Today I finished a lot of little things -- I finished cleaning out and have unplugged the large freezer for the duration of hurricane season. I managed to move the balance of the items into the small freezer compartment of the fridge and plan to continue to eat the contents of that down as much as possible. Will restock as needed but will not go overboard until the major danger passes -- around October. SES -- Almost all packed for the Black Hills

well I have definately learned I am not good at not spending ANY money but I have a lot of days where I only spend a couple of bucks, for the month I have only spent about 1/3 slightly more then that of my spending money for the month.
Going to claim 6 NS days so far. we will see how the last 9 days of the month go but not hopeful I will get many more.

I have a new baby! i.e. another dog He's a sweetie, needs a lot of training but is doing well so far. 1 yo dachshund and hasn't been neutered yet. In keeping with the dead presidents theme I've named him Nixon (other dogs are Wilson and Jackson) so they all have that "son" sound too Yes, I'm weird. I'll probably put a post up on facebook tomorrow, I'm too tired tonight. Definitely a spend day for dog supplies. Adoption fee wasn't bad, he's a good dog. I also splurged on two crates so I can crate train all these guys and a muzzle for my lab. It's a strong one but he can still pant and drink while it's on. I'm concerned that he might try to become the dominant dog with the new guy so until things are really, really settled he's going to be muzzled when they're both out. In other words I'm going to be home for the next several months breaking these guys in! But it'll be worth it if there are no dog fights, no injuries and they're all happy and get along together for years. Other than the dog adventures today I've been cleaning around the house, picked up two new fans and a handful of tank tops at Wal-Mart and I'm mixing up lemonade at home to keep cool. Another over 100 day tomorrow.

So bad mommy and daddy moment. DS was eating his supper last night and I'm across the table while DH is monitering DS and I notice a big lump on DS's middle finge. I go "Honey, did DS get a bug bite?" No, it was a BURN and it had blistered up like crazy. WHAT!! We have no idea what he touched that would have been hot. We don't know if maybe it was under the fridge. I don't think he had it when I first got home and he had no reaction that made me think he burned himself after I got home. DH couldn't figure it out either. EEK. We ran cold water over it and then DH drained it after supper and then did that again before bed. DH put some aloe on it at bed time, which DS proceded to rub into his eyes! UGH! We did give him a hit of IB profin and it looked better this morning. Sometimes I think DS's pain tolerance is way too high.

muttley- OUCH! You may want to have DS's pain tolerance checked by his physician. Hopefully it's just an owwie.
start- The puppy sounds soooo cute.
Last night DGM decided to do a complete 180 and be 100% improved- we'll see how she is today- but the doctor said not to wrap ourselves around that improvement- especially after she didn't recognize me the other day and she helped raise me- he said to him that is as big a red flag as her not recognizing one of the 4 kids.

mizbear: My heart goes out to you and yours. Good job confronting DM (and the D is not for Dear right now!) You need to worry about you and your health and DGM. Let DM and DBro deal with their own messes.
Muttley: Don't beat yourself up over it. Things happen and will continue to happen. You worked to make it better after it happened and sometimes that is all we can do.
Alarm did not go off so I had to drive DS#2 to his summer school. Oh well stopped by CVS as I had EBs to spend that would have gone bad while in the Black Hills. I bought a beach bag but may end up returning it. We will see.
Now off to prepare for the Black Hills, I have to do my Real estate continuing ed. It is due the end of the month, nothing like putting it off. I am thinking I am also going to put my Real Estate License on ice (aka suspend it) until the people I know are in a better position to purchase. It will save me around $250 right now to do it. Plus I was able to get my continuing ed for free instead of for the $54 it should have cost.

startsmart - yay new puppy! can't wait to see pix!
So I bought a new car yesterday. Or rather, I put down a deposit. I get to pick it up Saturday once I have blue in hand to do his side of the credit application. Ideally we get the 0% for 60 months offer (free money!) but my budget can handle up to 6%. Probably higher, since the car is the cheapest in its class and thus costs less than I had planned. It's a 2011 Mazda 2 in this bright green color. I'm so psyched. It's going to be my car for the next 10-15 years and it's a fun car, with room for 3 kids in the back (when we have a fourth we'll have to get a different car I guess) and lots of crap in the trunk. I'll feel so much better driving that than my 1996 Camry. Which I believe my brother is going to take for $500, paid whenever and however he can. His car has been run into the ground and he can't afford a newer one yet, so this will tide him over the next year or so. Always nice to help family out of a bind. So next weekend we'll swing by my parents' neck of the woods en route to our friends' for the fourth of july, show off the new car, drop the old one by my brother. Should be fun. Zoom zoom!
P.S. I know this might seem like a frivolous expense, but at the rate I'm getting freelance stuff I can make payments plus extra just out of the bonus freelance money (if I threw all freelance $ at it I could pay it off in a year, most likely), leaving our regular paychecks to pay down CC debt and add to savings, as planned for the year. It's all part of getting ready for kids. I want them in a safe car, not a 15yo one.

Yesterday was a NSD.
DVM: Glad to see you're still counting. I know it can be really hard at first. You really don't realize how much you nickel and dime yourself, spending a dollar here and there until you really start keeping track. I certainly still have months where I can't meet all of my NS goals, but as long as we remain in budget, and the spending remains planned (even if not planned for that day exactly) I figure we're in control and I won't stress too much over it.
mizbear: Good for you for standing up for yourself. Of course, the tricky part is sticking with it. But we are all here for you, moral support wise. Take care of yourself.
startsmart: Am I allowed to be jealous? I don't need a third dog, but I ever do so want one. Can't wait to see pictures on FB.
red: Yay for new cars! If you can afford it, than don't worry about it. We all have the right to indulge ourselves every once in a while.
We're facing the transition phase in to life without UE. It brings our income down by $1800/month. We're prepped for it. Most of that money had been going to pay extra on student loans or in to savings, so we haven't really been living on it, but I was really used to the cushion of getting money every week. Losing that cushion is actually going to be the hardest part. We currently have $200 we can spend between now and July 8, because of all the bills due at the beginning of the month. DH thinks I should pull some cash out of savings just as a cushion to keep from overdrafting. I probably should (don't want to pay the over draft fee), but I want to think we could get by on $200 for groceries and gas for 3 weeks. Of course, then I remember that he's driving 60 miles every day for school, and we're low on our protein stockpile (mostly chicken thighs and ground turkey) and we'll have an extra 19 year old and my mom for 4th of July weekend. So maybe a different 3 weeks we could get by on $200, but probably not these three weeks.

Muttley- Could it be a chemical burn? DH & I have had those moments. We see a scrape and know it wasn't there in the AM, but don't remember anything that could have caused it. Last night undressing mini-D, I noticed a huge bug bite under his arm. It looked painful, but he said it didn't hurt.
Red- Congrats on the new car. Isn't that a small car? I can't imagine fitting 3 car seats in either of our cars. We have an Alitma and a Sentra. We could put 2 carseats in the Altima, but not in the Sentra. DH is long legged and there is no way to get a car seat behind him in the Sentra. The only place to put it is in the middle. And kids are now in car seats forever now, my niece just finished 3rd grade and finally was able to stop using the booster seat about a year ago.
SES- Vacation was good. Only had rain 1 night in Denver and it was over pretty quick. We evidently picked the right week to go because yesterday they closed trail ridge road through Rocky Mtn National Park until about noon, because they got 5 inches of snow at the top. The amount of snow pack at the top was amazing last week, there were still 20 ft walls of snow next to the road in places. But once you got below 10,000 feet it tapered off quickly and in Estes Park it was in the mid 70's. Mini-D liked the children's museum and zoo. He wasn't so fond of the transportation museum, there was nothing he could do there.
AZmom- I got home late last night, so I'll post the recipe for the skillet bread on the blog tonight.

Oh, had my "review" today. The boss was like I don't want to have a sit down there year. YEAH! I really didn't want to sit down for 5 minutes with him in his office. No raise this year, but I was expecting that. Although I was hoping I was wrong. Oh well.

dakota - I said 3 kids, not car seats. Could probably get 2 carseats and a kid, so we should be good for at least the first two then, maybe 3, depending on how we space out our kids. there is surprisingly a lot of space in the backseat. My stepdad and the car salesman (well over 6ft tall) were back there comfortably. As blue and I are both short-legged, our seats are usually moved pretty far up, giving even more room. We also have the CRV, which can become the family car as needed. What are the rules for getting out of a car seat anyways? I was an extremely tall child (and am now 5'8'', just long in torso and not in legs) and blue wasn't a short kid, so I would expect our kids to be ahead of their peers in height and weight.

Red - Car seat laws vary quite a bit from state to state. AAP recommends rearfacing until age 2 or 35 lb (law requires age 1 and 20 lb). After that, most states require harnessing until 4 years of age and 40 pounds and I think the average requirement is 8 years or 80 pounds for a booster seat. Sunshine Kids make narrow car seats that can be fit 3 across in most vehicles. When DS was in his infant carrier there we could fit 2 people with the car seat in the Murano. In his Britax, while there is more front to back room even rear facing, we can only fit one other person in the back with him. ETA: Pounds because startsmart is a silly goose.

AAP recommends rearfacing until age 2 or 35 muttelyn - I know you meant 35 pounds but that made me giggle. Imagining my mom strapping my 6'2" brother into a car seat. heh. red- pictures will come soon, he's a handful so right now he's on the leash attached to my desk sleeping with a bone. If I get up to grab the camera he'll start whining! shanandoah- I was reminded that 2 dogs are friends, 3 dogs create a pack. so now I've got to settle them in so I'm in charge and there are no fights for dominance. Crates arrive tomorrow so that should help.

Red - As Muttley stated, laws do vary a lot. In Kentucky, it is 1 year and 20 lbs for rear facing and 5-point harness until 40 inches. You have to be in a booster seat until at least 7 years old. If you are 7 years old and over 50 inches tall - then you can use a seat belt w/o a booster seat. And even though Lil' Smokey is now 7 and is 53 inches tall - he is continuing to use his booster seat for day to day travel. If we ride in someone else's car I won't have to move his seat but I feel better w/him in the booster seat for daily trips b/c the seat belt stays properly positioned. He also knows that he cannot ride in the front seat until he is 12!

I swear the person who put in the passenger side airbag was a parent. They kept thinking to themselves, "Forget about safety, we put this in, and I won't have to listen to any more arguments about who gets to ride in front. Praise be."

smokey - My nephew liked his booster so much he ended up using it until he was 11!! It was his choice, but he was super safety concerned and also he could see better if he was in a booster. His younger sister (who was slightly bigger at 2 years younger) stopped using the booster before he did. He's 13 now and as far as I know doesn't ride up front.
dakota - I don't think it is a chemical burn. It is another one of those where would it have come from. It didn't seem to bother DS, but it has DH and I freaked out. DH said DS was down by the cactus in the yard (yes our hillside is getting overrun with cacti, and one has come into the yard) and wondered if it wasn't an allergic reaction to a prick, but that seems strange too. I'm more concerned that there may be something in our house that DS can get at that can burn him and we not know about it. So it might happen again.

Shan: When did your DH start receiving unemployment? Start: congrats on the new puppy. You are a glutton for punishment! red: In MN under 1 and 20 lbs must be in a rear facing carseat. Figure on having Boosters and or carseats until the oldest is 8 or older. DS#1 will be 8 while we are in South Dakota but will be in a booster much longer as he is maybe 50lbs. Our Minivan has a weight sensor so if the passenger seat in front has under 80lbs it does not activate. I actually really like that feature as I do occassionally have DS#1 in front. Although since MN does NOT require a 5pt harness I can put DD in a booster seat even though she is 3. That means I can get rid of the carseats. So much nicer as booster seats are easier to move around.

Man things have gotten tough. Pretty sure I was just using a lap belt seatbelt from like age 4 on. If not sooner. I guess we'll just wing it and see what the laws are when we get there. Thanks everyone!!
We have a stuffy work function right after work, although I'm skipping out on the super annoying part to go to class. Which I'm also not really feeling today. I really need to get home and work on my copyediting project. I might just take tomorrow off to work on it, even though things are kind of busy here at work. We'll see. The weekend is super packed so I don't know when else I'd work on it, and it's due Monday. Ack! I'm thinking it only needs a light edit anyways so hopefully not too time-consuming once I get going. I do have tomorrow night, a few hours Friday, and Sunday night... but also a bridal shower, an after party for that (Sunday), picking up my car, and a 10 hour bachelorette Saturday, and picking blue up at the airport Friday night. And here I thought things would slow down after our wedding, but it turns out now everyone else (and I do mean everyone) is getting hitched.

Afternoon Ladies -- I will finish packing sometime in the next couple of days. It will be cooler in SD, than it is here, which is good, but I'll have to be careful how I pack so I can wear layers if I need them.
Mizbear -- hugs to you during this difficult time. Kudos for standing your ground with the family.
muttley -- sorry about DS. It seems like he is on the mend.
SES -- We are on DL4476 from BWI through MN; scheduled to arrive in SD at 6:13 pm. My cell phone may or may not work. Oh joy. I'm guessing you don't do text messaging?! LOL.

red- Chances are regs are going to change by the time you have a LO. Carseat manufacturers are going to upgrading etc. When I bought DS's infant seat, the big thing was that carriers were going from a 20 pound weight limit to a 30 to 35 weight limit. Now, just a year and a half later you will be hard pressed to find a 20 pound limit seat. Britax recently upgraded all their convertable seats to a 40 pound rearfacing limit. I saved a ton of money by buying the 35 pound rear facing one since DS is a pretty slow weight gainer at this point (he's probably aroudn 25 pounds). The Sunshine Kids Radians all rearface to 40 or 45 pounds and now forward face to 80 pounds or so.

MK: He's been on UE for over 2 years now. First got it in May 2009. Working the census last summer extended his benefits. The last 3 months haven't even been the federal UE benefit, its been the special WA state DOL benefit for when UE is really high and all other benefits run out. If UE in the state had dropped below 9% at any time while he was on it, it would have been gone. I'm not trying to complain. We haven't NEEDED UE for over a year now. But I've been used to having money in the account every Friday for the last 6+ years. (When DH was working, we were both paid every two weeks, on opposite weeks, and UE has been every week.) The real transistion is to only having new money "appear" every two weeks.

oh summer! I've relocated to the living room where I have 3 fans running and there's lots of natural light. Jackson is sacked out on the couch, Wilson is by my feet and Nixon is in the kennel. They're all cool and happy and quiet.
I think I just got offered a promotion. Via email. It would mean managing a lot more responsibilities and several teams so I need some time to review this.

Jeez, a carseat until 80 pounds? My SIL would probably still be in one! I think she's 86 pounds soaking wet.

Well there are a lot of obese children. It has to do more with when your bones mature more and are able to support your weight. A small adult wouldn't benefit a lot from 5 point harnessing. In fact there is some studies out there that suggest harnessing after age 4 is actually detrimental. I'm not remembering why at the moment.
