Complaining about your income seems to be one of the many YM taboos.
But really, have you ever caught yourself complaining about how little money you make?
For me, a little. It was a shock going from college student expecting a 40-50k job upon graduation to making 30k in a HCOL. I didn't complain too much publicly but it did bother me. But unlike many I did something about it. I applied for better paying jobs and got one with a different agency at almost twice what I was making.

Hell, I still do sometimes. I've never claimed to be perfect... I don't think.

Well, I don't HAVE an income ~ but that's by choice.
I don't really complain about my wonderful DH's income, but I do admit to complaining a bit when they are discussing freezing military pay.

I haven't yet, but if I don't get a raise next year, I might start ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) We haven't had a wage increase since 2007, and there have been some huge benefit cuts since then. The other two branches of state government got a 1% hike this year, but we did not... I suspect there will be an increase in 2012, just because they don't want a lot of disgruntled voters

I don't complain about my pay; it's decent for what I do and I could make more if I really wanted to.
I do grumble that my pay doesn't go as far as it seems it should.

I did..until I made a budget and realized how much money I was wasting. Now I can't believe how much money I can allocate towards paying off debt. Never thought I would be able to pay 1200 a month on credit cards before, since I never seemed to have any money.

Yes, I've complained at various times about my income...but I wouldn't do it on this board. Too many people waiting to swoop in and lecture you.

"I don't really complain about my wonderful DH's income, but I do admit to complaining a bit when they are discussing freezing military pay."
I thought military pay/benefits were a golden goose that was above being frozen or cut.
But you bring up a good point. They've frozen the COLA raises for federal employees for two years, but it's not like the cost of gas or food or anything has stayed the same, so it's essentially a paycut. And now they're talking about "reforming" our pensions to save us from overspending. The thing is they'll never balance the budget off of workers as we're a small percentage of the budget. If you really want to fix this country's budget woes you have to go after the big 4, SS, medicare, medicaide and military.
But I know it could be worse and is for many people. State and local government workers have had it way worse. And they normally do give our generous COLA raises during elections years.

I know I have. It was a common complaint in my last workplace because the corporate office based teacher pay off of what was normal for their geographic area (rural Kansas) versus what was normal for DFW. All of my unmarried coworkers were living with their parents because they weren't making enough money to rent anywhere.
Even though he is a first-year teacher, DH isn't complaining about his income because it is very high compared to the state minimum. Teaching actually pays over $15,000 a year more than his first science job out of college. His problems lie more with the fact that despite him doing everything correctly and producing high TAKS scores this spring, he still may not have his contract renewed because of the state budget cuts.

Well for Medicaid and Medicare its this little thing called verifying a bill is legit prior to payment. But now we can't do that because somewhere along the way the government got in the business of funding operating cash flow for medical providers which is bs since we can't recover half the fradulent payments. It goes out of the country never to be recovered by the government. They can't even begin to the estimate the fraud number accurately. You can bet your last dollar that if they started verifying prior to payment the medical providers would be beyotching and moaning about how the mean ole government was bankrupting them. Well its cut down or fraud or reduce your payments and they'll beyotch about that too. When defrauding the federal government is the funding method of choice for organized crime rings you have a serious problem. Its way past time to crackdown. I'm so freaking sick of hearing we can't do this or that. Yes, we damn well can and unless we want to empty the trust fund in the next ten years we damn well better start. I gripe about my income and the cost of living just bc it seems way out of whack. I'll try to gripe less after my raise next month ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

For the last 24 years, my pay has sucked; but I don't complain. Occupation: SAHM ;D
As far as DH's income. He's been fairly well compensated over the last (3) years of his career, however, last summer he went from managing one department ( and reporting to a director) to managing three departments and reporting directly to the VP with no promotion (he's doing the work of a director) and no increase in compensation whatsoever, despite a ridiculous increase in responsibility/hours.
The economy sucks and I guess they think they can get away with it since most people feel lucky to even have a job. We have always planned that he would take early retirement at age 55 which is next year. The company expecting to get something for nothing (okay, not exactly nothing, but...) has only made his decision to pull the trigger that much easier.

Yes. Then my mother 'slapped' some sense into me. I make enough for what I need and some of what I want therefore I should be grateful.

Yes, I haven't received a raise in 6 years despite taking on more duties, another certification that made money for the company and brought clients in. It's disheartening to know that no matter what I do I can't "earn" more money by being a better employee. With food, gas, and everything else up it is a pay cut so I feel like complaining. BUT then I remember I'm actually really well compensated for my area so I should shut up and stop complaining. I also chose a career field in which I will max out my earning potential unless I start my own business and will never get an indefinite amount of raises per year just for years put in.

Yes, occasionally. Honestly, I'm fairly compensated for my job, but I've always wanted to make 50K. I also started my first job out of college at 25K, so I'd like to be making twice what I used to make. I currently make 48K.
Though this board has inspired me, I am going to ask for a raise next month. I've been here 4 years with no review, and I've added a lot of value since I've been here. Worst they can do is say no, right?

Yes, I had the back luck to arrive here on campus right when they decided to freeze wages, I haven't even recieved a cost of living raise. I try to keep it in perspective because I can pay all my bills on it and stuff but it's depressing sometimes to still be at my starting salary.
An email was sent out that the president has authorized 2.5% raises this year. Not much but at least it is SOMETHING and my salary will start moving again.

Yes and no. I don't complain about DH's pay because he makes pretty good money. I do sometimes complain about my pay because I work for a staffing company and only make about $75 a day. So before taxes that is only $375 a week IF I get work every day. I am getting job experience though and hopefully that will help me get a full time job soon.
What I do find myself complaining about more is how much of our income is going to pay off debt from our KUWJ's years. I wish we had been smarter with money earlier in our marriage.

I don't complain because that would involve telling someone what I make. When I was making much less money that was embarrassing. Now it's no one's business.

I always openly joked (dreamed) about the next level, rather than complain. When I made 20K, I joked about "all I need is 40." When I hit 40, it became "all I need is 50." When I hit 50, it became "all I need is 75", etc.

Karma to you for getting out of that rat race. ![](http://us.social.s-msn.com/s/images/emoticons/thumbs_up.gif) That's why I try to get a hold of young people on this board and advise them not only not to fall into the KUWJ trap, but to say "screw the Joneses", prioritize their own goals, and live below their means to get there. And many times I wonder how many Joneses were/are actually out there. I sometimes think that it's just a bunch of KUWJ people trying to keep up with each other and that there are fewer actual Joneses out there than everyone thinks. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/idunno.gif)

I probably complained about essentially being slave labor in grad school. But I don't recall complaining since graduating and going into industry. DH on the other hand, complains about his income every once in awhile. Academia is certainly a labor of love. Good thing he's got a sugar mama. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

I do - every year when my annual review comes due. It's not so much complaining as it is setting my expectations for compensation for the next year to make sure I'm in line with the rest of the market.
Staying with one company for a long time can end up costing a person thousands of dollars a year if you don't keep on your employer to pay you market.

I used to complain about my income, especially when I got my first job and my salary was so low that I qualified for food stamps. (Fear not, I didn't take them and commit the ulitmate YM sin. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) ) While my salary now isn't exactly fantastic, DH and I have a combined income that allows us to have a comfortable life, and I realize my finanical situation could be a lot worse, so I don't complain anymore.

I'm now on a 2 year no COLA federal pension, but my cost of living has gone up.
I'm learning to budget better.
I used to complain when I was working that no amount of pay was high enough for what I did.
