I have complained about my salary, and I got tired of whining about it. I think that people who have been sitting tight and making the best of being overworked and underpaid for the past few years are going to start/have started voting with their feet regarding wage or workplace satisfaction. I hated my workplace environment. I have no regrets about leaving it earlier this year. I'm on the verge of accepting a new position that pays far better than the one I resigned, is far less dysfunctional, and I'm really excited about it.

horatio, I don't remember your job post. I'm sorry you're unhappy. I was in the same spot not long ago. I think if you're really miserable at your job and/or with the work you do, it makes it a lot easier to be really unhappy with the pay too.
servant_of_dog, Good luck. Changing jobs was the best thing I could have done.

What I do find myself complaining about more is how much of our income is going to pay off debt from our KUWJ's years. I wish we had been smarter with money earlier in our marriage. Karma to you for getting out of that rat race. That's why I try to get a hold of young people on this board and advise them not only not to fall into the KUWJ trap, but to say "screw the Joneses", prioritize their own goals, and live below their means to get there. And many times I wonder how many Joneses were/are actually out there. I sometimes think that it's just a bunch of KUWJ people trying to keep up with each other and that there are fewer actual Joneses out there than everyone thinks. I think you are right! I know most of our friends that we were trying to keep up with are now admitting to being into debt up to their eyeballs too!

Thanks kgb, and congratulations on your improved position! It's hard to make the decision to trade a bad job for temporarily no job, but I'm glad I chose to (and was able to) take the risk. Horatio, best wishes - I hope you find something better, soon.

Before I took my current position, I complained about the lack of raises at my previous employer. But that was more about the lack of room for advancement than the absolute number of my salary.
When I took my current job, I got a very generous raise. But I found myself mentally grumbling that my prescription co-pay had gone from $8 to $10 per month.
Apparently there is just no making me happy.

One year, at my very first job, I got a fairly decent raise, and I was so happy. Then we found out our healthcare costs were going up, and our contribution was more than my raise, so I ended up worse off in the end. That stunk. I know I complained a lot that year.

When I started out I was making slow progress on pay but I don't recall complaining about it, except maybe to family. Finally when I had enough, I got an offer from a competitor. Unlike you I took the counteroffer. No regrets.

I'm happy with my income because we have enough to pay our bills whilst I am able to save quite a bit for my retirement. However, I work like a dog for the income, and am now taking a second job doing medical coding for another hospital chain, so we shall see how my wrists and shoulders hold up with the extra computer work. I like medical coding far better than medical billing, which is what I did for the previous 18 years before learning to code and then becoming certified. I doubled my income by becoming a coder.

Crafty - LOL! Karma to you because I know how you feel! I try not to complain, because I make good money, but sheesh - I'm a single mom with 2 kids both in college. According to FAFSA - I should easily be able to pay over $23K per year for my kids to go to school, but I'm not sure where that's supposed to come from! The ex only helps pay for half of their student loans, but no extra really towards insurances, etc. But, I mostly remember how blessed I am to make the money I do. And know that one of these days (hopefully before I retire in 7 years) they will finally be off my insurances and making their own money! ;D

I complain every chance I get! Maybe that's why I have so few friends. ;D Seriously, when you're working class in a crappy economy with health issues you didn't have when you were younger, that's about all you can do.
