with the money if you were not contributing it to retirement? I know, I know... the idea of not contributing money to retirement is unthinkable for some but let's pretend for a moment ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Our 401K contributions comes to about $1,916/month so after taxes it would be about $1,430/month. With that we could a) afford to stay in our current apartment b) travel more often c) spend more on entertainement (eating out, going out, more money on hobbies)

I'd just spend it on more shit. I might as well spend it on something useful.

House projects (deck, tile backsplash, stone veneer siding, hot tub, etc.) We would be eating cat food in 40 years, but our house would look GOOD!

I set money aside for retirement even if it's not going into a 401K/IRA/Roth, etc.
If you haven't already, I would make a written budget so you can save for your priorities (house, kids, pay off SL's, retirement, travel, etc) while still allowing some money for fun "now". Without a global view of the whole pie and how it is apportioned you can't make wise informed decisions.

I think I would still be investing it in a brokerage account. I think that after getting used to a certain lifestyle and savings is hard to break that, we save around 55% of our net income and that's after 15% of 401K contributions on my end. Now let's say I go crazy --- Travel in style ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I'm already a hotel snob so I'm thinking first class all the way!

The mortgage on a rental property? A nice weekend trip per month, or really nice trips every 4 or 5 months. Car payments on a fully loaded 3-series Lots of great toys...

oh, I see, this is the parallel universe where I don't save that money for retirement.
Yes, if I had that terminal disease that gave me 2 years left I would go on more trips abroad, share my wealth with deserving people, buy that Audi A4 Avant *AND* the Volvo S60 T6 (both!). And a ton of licorice jelly beans, I'd be eating them all the time.

Right now I'd be putting into savings. Once I was comfortable with that? Who knows...increase my variable spending money. I'd probably avoid taking on another monthly obligation, so a car would be out of the question for now.

I'd give more to disaster relief charities.
But mostly, I'd "waste it" on more and better clothes and stuff for the house - more eating out maybe a few more gadgets.
Oh, no what am I saying - I'd be spending money on antiques and collectibles at auctions every week!

I'd put in a swimming pool at my house. Nothing fancy, just your standard-issue cement pond.

I'd build up an emergency fund. The number of months is at one's discretion. Having substantial assets at ones disposal, instead of a home full of junk, places one in an enviable position in economic times such as this. I am a prime example. I have 100s of thousands of liquid assets at my fingertips and fully funded retirement plans.

If in some alternate universe I didn't need to save for retirement for some reason, I'd own a slightly bigger but much nicer house in a better neighborhood. I'd probably also buy some decent furniture from somewhere other than IKEA and Amazon.com.

Ok rule of the game Savoir Faire: no savings at all, not even brokerage accounts, EF, etc.
We keep on hearing from the media how "most americans" have no savings, barely if any retirement fund and living paycheck to paycheck.
So let's say everything you are saving now (in your case I think over 20K a year just in your 401k) in either a brokerage , savings or retirement account you could spend.
What would you do? If you get to spend every dime, how would your life change?
In our case if I add ROTH IRA and savings, that gives me about 2K/month play money so I would definitely - not be going to the stress of moving out now just to save $500/month - definitely go on nicer vacations and more often - take the wife out more ofthen - she will definitely not hear me gripe about the budget as much

I would pay off my SLs faster. Currently I contribute the max to 401(k), so that would really help.

I saw a nice Canali suit in Nordstroms yesterday. I'd definitely get a few of those.

For DH a couple of vintage guitars; for me - I'd spend more money entertaining. I love having people over. Some big, fat, juicy fillet mignon steaks and lobster tails would be good!! ;D
But geez, that wouldn't spend all the money that DH puts in his 401K so I guess we'd just have to take a trip abroad too. ;D

This would be a large chunk of change since we are currently over 50 and maxing out everything. Travel, Europe every year plus other trips. Help pay for DS graduate school. Charity Cars for kids?

::on a side note, can you teach my wife how to be like that... pretty pretty please::
I'm pretty sure she'd look at my like I'm some kind of alien creature. I mean, I like to look nice, but I don't get off on shopping. I don't spend more than 2 minutes picking out an outfit, I have wash and wear hair, and I don't wear makeup. And I HATE clutter.
ETA: Part of it is probably age. When I was in my teens and early 20's, I enjoyed shopping more than I do now, although it was never one of my favorite activities, and I liked "stuff" more than I do now. After moving from home to college to home to lawschool to home to an apartment to home to a house to a house, and having to pack and carry my crap myself, I've decided I like stuff less than I did.
Does your wife "assist" in your moves? As in packing and humping the boxes herself not just telling you what to do? If not, she should.
Im now 41 and I've found myself cherishing people, memories, and experiences, not stuff. Stuff is just stuff and can be replaced, the other things cant.

Oh...if we were eliminating all savings/investing (and I would assume debt paydown too)? I'd definitely get a nice new car.

So it is not a lie... they are woman like that in the world ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) Every time I tell her that, she tells me how it could be much worse using some of her friends/cousins as examples (and yes I agree they are 10 times worse as my wife). But there is hope, swamp is an example; the 2 minutes picking out an outfit will never happen so I can forget about that ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) . When we are going out she usually start getting ready like 30-40 minutes before me, and I still get to take a shower, get dressed and I am seating in the living room waiting for her.

I have absolutely no patience for that.
I think I spent about 15 minutes getting dressed and done for my wedding. Earlier in the day, I went to the driving range, drank some beers, and hung out with friends.

Does your wife "assist" in your moves? As in packing and humping the boxes herself not just telling you what to do? If not, she should. . Nope she bosses around. Like this morning I was packing up the car to drop a few things off at the new apartment on my way to work she uses having her Period as a reason why she could not help me lift/carry the boxes. And funny, last year when we moved and two years before that, she had the same excuse. We always seemed to be moving when she has her period (I told her that too this morning). Coincidence?

You're fucking kidding me?! She can't help because she has her period?! Good lord, what a princess. She needs to get over herself. ![](http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/JiminiChristmas/smileys/75_75.gif)
