That is true, drama. The question is.... this is leading up to further teaching on gender issues, etc. Do we really need that? I just do not believe it. I'm more conservative than liberal, with a dose of liberal there, no doubt, and even I do NOT believe this is necessary in schools. WHERE are all these parents teaching their kids to hate others? I don't see it. Sorry. Even my dear Mormon friends-- (everyone will agree they are straight laced, right??) they do NOT teach their kids to hate. NOW-- some people may not like the WAY they teach their children to love all people, but the fact is they do.

I don't really get it either. I don't think it's really the school's job to teach that either. I can get wanting to teach anti-bullying but this just seems like a really dumb way to do it. Plus it isn't just gay kids or transgendered kids that get picked on. I used to be made fun of because I was short, I'd love to here the animal kingdom parallel to why people shouldn't make fun of me because of my height. For the most part I am betting that 5 year olds have no clue who is "gay" or "transgendered" in their class (or will grow up to be) and don't freaking care! Kids are pretty tolerant compared to adults and that's not really a set of issues that, at least from my experience, are being addressed on the playground. Julie smelling, Tommy wearing funny clothes, Amy being short, how about we address the things kids are REALLY being bullied about in grade school and let the GBLT stuff go until middle school/HS when those issues usually crop up.

I think some people are being too literal to see what's really going on, and there's many things wrong with this on different levels.
DramaQ is right on a literal level. The connection between nature and clown fish is absurd and has nothing to do with stopping bullying. On this level it's simply just a waste of taxpayer money and student's time.
But you have to read between the lines, certain people out there have an agenda to push. That agenda is to promote transgenderism to very young kids. They use cute animals to try to make a point (which again is absurd) but the motive is still there. It's propaganda and don't mistake it for anything but. I don't know about anyone else but I find that trying to brainwash kids that young who don't know any better despicable.
I agree with dramaQ that parents should be passing along the values they feel they should to their kids, but if the schools were teaching values that conflicted with what I wanted to teach my children, I'd have a problem with it. The fact remains that it's not the schools place to decide what a kid should or shouldn't think about transgenerism. That discussion and teaching belongs to the parents.
The other thing that bothers me is the age. I'm not totally opposed to teaching kids heavy stuff, but age 5 and 6 seem too young to start talking about gays, lesbians, and transgenered folks.
The same goes for expressing one's self. Doing something as drastic as sex reassignment surgery seems very premature before the kid becomes and adolescent. You need a certain amount of maturity to make such a long lasting decision. At age 5 how do you know if the kid really is transgender or just going through a phase?
And as a quick aside, who the heck decides they're going to be a "gender spectrum trainer" for their profession? That's a useless profession if I ever saw one.
Anyway, back on topic. No matter how you slice it, this thing is wrong on some level. Be it talking about personal issues that should be taught by parents, a waste of time and money when students should be learning math, science, and English, or someone trying to push an agenda by using propaganda on such young kids.

That agenda is to promote acceptance of transgenderism to very young kids.
Fixed. I find the whole transgender thing a bit odd, however, transgenders choose to date normal people as a rule so trying to get more transgender people is actually counter-productive.
It seems odd to me to attempt to teach this at a young age, but it is CA, home of fake balls for dogs so they don't feel inadequate.

The very earliest I think it may be appropriate to cover GLBT as a topic might be middle school sexual education.

Excellent post phenoix, it seems the liberal posters here are only able to comprehend this issue in it's literal sense, and not able to see the subtext or read between the lines of what is really going on here. It's ridiculous to say this is about fish, when the program itself is being referred to as "gender diversity education" by the very people who are funding and implementing it. I can only surmise that the liberals are intentionally obfuscating their understanding of the real agenda here (i.e. denial), because I know that not all of them are really this naive...

They don't want to see it for what it is. It's called obfuscation. Same old same old. Deny reality.

whatever the hell y'all are talking about, that has nothing to do with the thread, I was just wondering if Marsha would be so kind as to answer the question posed to her over a page of posts ago, in response to a very out-there post she made in response to something I'd said. just curious. thanks.....

so I guess that's a no. I suppose it's much easier to take a tangent and run, than it is to actually stay on topic and answer a direct question.

Ah yes, the nefarious, sinister "agenda" argument. While I may agree that teaching this at the Kindergarten level is far too young for it to do any good, I could never quite fathom this overblown melodrama some people fabricate when a school teaches anything about non-heterosexuals. Do people really believe that a lesson in school is going to transform straights into gays? Will gender-confident children suddenly decide to become transgender? Seriously?
I continuously hear the word "brainwash" in relation to this topic, so I feel compelled to ask just what you feel they are being "brainwashed" to do? Become gay?
Unlikely, and anyone silly enough to believe a school can "brainwash" someone into being gay has more serious issues to concern himself with such as actually getting an education.
What it really boils down to, when all of the semantics and fluff is cleared away, is that these parents do not want their kids to accept or even tolerate anyone who does not conform to their version of gender identity. I'm not quite sure what everyone is so alarmed about. Are you actually worried that your son or daughter might not grow up disliking or even hating the LGBT community?
