Just checked MO booster seat law - at least 7, 4 foot 9, and 80 lbs. S turned 9 today and is 4 foot 2 and 52 lbs; guess who's going to be in a booster for a long while yet. Besides all that, seat belt doesn't hit her right yet.

DD2 had her 5-year checkup yesterday. Continuing on the path that she has been on since about 9 months, she is a giant. She has finally gone off the charts for height (she was always hovering around 95th percentile) and her weight is right at the top as well. So she's a proportional giant! For specs, she is 47 inches and 55 pounds.

I feel completely unprepared for this school year. I think I finally finished registration, dh is getting school supplies. Getting dr. Appts completed between camping trips. I should have just taken next week off work to get to all of the back to school activities.
Hope everyone is well! Miss you all!

I just managed to look up the first day of school this morning.
I think part of it is being thrown off by the chaos of 2020. I know what the governor mandates this year but then I'm getting totally different emails from the school system. I disengaged because it stressed me out.
I'm sure I wouldn't have been the only parent whose kids missed the first day this fall. I think every parent gets a mulligan for fall 2021

I'm not ready for the start of school AT ALL. It's the 23rd, so just three weeks away, but there is so much going on in between now and then that are taking all my focus. Luckily they had a uniform swap last week and I was able to score a few pairs of pants, some shirts and a couple dress-code compliant quarter zip sweaters for Carrot, so except for maybe a new pair of shoes, he should be ok clothes-wise. But, we have no school supplies yet and I have no idea how I'm going to handle him being kicked out of after school care every day at 4.

It's actually a law in Iowa that school cannot start until after the Iowa State Fair because it's such a huge economic generator for a lot of the rural areas of the state.

DD starts school the 30th. The next closest county to us starts the 18th. That county gets more days off due to Jewish holidays and conferences than DD’s county does.

Looks like my county isn't starting until 9/8. But the calendar sucks. They get Thanksgiving and Black Friday off. Early dismissal the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
They are in school until 12/23 and go back 1/3. As for spring break they get Good Friday and the Monday after and that's it.
The next county over goes back 8/30 and has a full week plus for spring break and more time for Thanksgiving/Christmas. They go 4 days longer than my county.
My niece and nephew in Florida go back 8/10 if it's not delayed by Delta running rampant.

All along, I've been thinking it is Wednesday, 8/26 because it always starts on a Wednesday.
Not this year! First day is Thursday 8/27!

We're pretty prepped. I just need to get the girls pencil cases and gym shoes. DD1 wants a new dress for first day of school. DS will be missing his first day of school. He and DH are taking a road trip to look at a diesel mechanics school over labor day weekend. We have a call tonight with the school to prep for the visit. (Side note: I was not prepped for the fact that we'd still have to do school visits, etc with a kid going into a trade school. )
If DS went to his first day of school, we'd actually have 3 different first days of school between the four kids. DD1 and DD2 start the last day of August, DD3 starts Sept 2 and DS is supposed to start Sept 3. Have kids they said. It will be fun they said.
We also get to deal with three graduations this year. Mine for my masters, DS for High School, and DD1 for 8th grade. Its going to be a hell of a year.

I haven't even thought much about back to school until this week, have nothing ready, but it's not my fault. We don't get the letters with specific supply lists until mid-August (and with Covid resurgence, the people in charge are likely still figuring out how they will arrange things), we have a shit ton of school supplies anyway, and the kids still have over a month of summer vacation left. Our summer is winding down, and don't have any big plans for the duration. We might do one more weekend away to wrap things up, try to get back to the beach again, catch a flick at the drive-in, and maybe camp out in the backyard.

Our school system supplies everything. If you shop for supplies it all ends up going in a communal pile to be distributed so if I don't school supply shop it's not the end of the world. I am not going to worry about this year for all I know we'll end up virtual again in a month and it doesn't matter.
I probably should look up to see if anything changes for 6th grade though. IDK if graphing calculators are still a thing. IMO those should go and students learn to use Excel which can do the exact same things in a fraction of the time and is a skill you can put on your resume.

I refuse to give up my graphing calculator - I got mine freshman year in high school (so 1995), and that thing is still going strong! Even though I don't use most of the graphing functions these days, I still love it and when it dies, I will absolutely buy a new one. #engineernerd

Checking in - we just got back yesterday from 8 nights/9 days in the south, aka what has turned into a Delta variant covid hotspot (which wasn't the case when I booked everything 5 months ago, naturally). We ended up deciding to go as we all needed a break, and much of our plans were outdoors. We visited New Orleans, Gulfport, Mobile and Pensacola and mostly had fun exploring everything, though I definitely wanted to strangle my kids a few times, and DH, for that matter. Mask use was definitely not high enough by most of the people we saw. I was really impressed with the Louisiana Children's Museum on mask use, though - they required it of everyone over the age of 2, and I heard staff reminding people when they weren't compliant.
M's last day of daycare is tomorrow - we ended up sending her today/tomorrow as her absolute favorite teacher has been on vacation for the last 3 weeks, and wanted to see her again. While I'm excited to only have before/after care fees, I'm still feeling a little sad and bittersweet that this is the end. Our center has been a really great fit for our family, and my kids have received wonderful care there, plus we've made some amazing friends with other kids/their families over the years. We don't live close to our center, so the kids will not be in the same school, which is okay. But definitely bittersweet. M will likely be back there next summer as I don't think she'll be old enough for the local day camps - she turns 5 at the end of August, and most of the camps require you to have completed kindergarten and be 6 - she won't be 6 until after 1st grade starts next year.
We find out the kids' teachers this weekend. We already know that M "won" the Spanish immersion lottery, so I know which 2 teachers she will have, but don't know which kids will be in her section. Our next door neighbor's son also got in, so we're hoping those 2 are in the same class. And C is just hoping that his BFF is in his 4th grade class - no teacher preference.

My kids go back on Tues 8/17 which is weird because we always go back on Weds. Half day and then two full days which is usually a good break-in period for everyone.
The last two days they have been driving me crazy as I wfh. Seriously, I have my headphones on, am visibly in video mtgs, and holding up my hand to wave go away. We'd worked thru all these kinks months ago. Will have a conversation at dinner and make sure they have more things to do.

Mine go back on 8/16. I'm so glad to have them in the same school again, so only 1 dropoff and pickup time. And only 1 calendar to work off of.
We haven't done anything about school supplies yet. We were going to do it today but plans changed. Maybe tomorrow DH can go do a quick run.
I booked Labor Day weekend in the Dells so we're all looking forward to that. Hopefully the Delta varient won't screw it up for us.

That's cool! We don't have that here. Our school takes donated money (gave them some) and does a bulk order. Easier and less expensive. Makes total sense but I still miss it. Maybe I need to get out more....

Maybe I need to get out more.... I HATED school supply shopping. Started when my youngest went to K, we didn’t go early and they were out of 8 or 16 count crayons. List was very specific those were only ones allowed. (Couldn’t have crayon envy). Should I buy larger pack and send her with 8? Send without? Then later with super specific lists. Must have Red folder with pockets and tabs? And then 3 kids with 3 different lists.

Our schools do communal supplies too now so everyone gets the same thing. If you buy any it goes in the pot.
For the longest time the list still said no Trapper Keepers. I was today years old when I found out Amazon still carries them.
Now I'm tempted to buy one to see if the teachers even still recognize one.
It was to try to prevent supply envy.
Yeah because being decked out in name brand clothes and Doc Martens didn't already signal the social pecking order. Or the heavy favoritism by teachers who were also the sports coaches. It's totally the TKs that made us mortals feel singled out.

We used to need pencil boxes in grade school. My grampa saved and gave me his old cigar box because that was what my dad used. I got in so much trouble and had NO idea why!

I looked up our middle school supply list online. As of last year, it said no trapper keepers. I think the issue was that they are too large for the desks--or maybe the velcro is annoying, but I remember seeing the desk thing as the explanation before.

DD13 starts school on 8/17; anxiety is already causing her sleep issues. She can't pinpoint it though to talk about it. Likely also has to do with her splintering from her bff of the past 4-5 yrs. Bff has just gotten weird in a bad way - online all the time, failing multiple classes, etc. DD is very mature, this friend is lacking but that helped ground DD a bit in the past. DD understands that this is likely a healthy split but it still comes with intense feelings.

DS started kindergarten last week and it's not going well. We are getting a daily incident. Hitting, throwing things, tantrums. I'm at a loss. I knew he would have trouble adjusting. He doesn't adapt well to new environments and he has trouble regulating his emotions. We have an appointment with a therapist Wednesday that we set up two months ago to help ease the transition. That was the soonest we could get him in and its not soon enough. Playing a lot of should have, could have, would have. I don't know where I went wrong. I just want him to be happy and thrive and for everyone else to see the sweet boy that I do, and I hate sending him off know that he is struggling and other kids are having to bear the consequences of my bad parenting.
