Gwen's clothes from Justice finally shipped. She will be happy about that. Of course she goes through a growth spurt right now so all her underthings and most of her spring/summer clothes no longer fit.

Before the virus came, my sisters and assorted nieces where taking K out shopping every couple of months. They were using their Kohl's cash, etc. on buying stuff for K and having a grand ole time figuring out what her style is starting to be.

My Mom is making masks. She sews and she's got fabric and she's doing the tie ones instead of elastic. My younger brother gave her a bandana from Absolut vodka and she made it into a mask. His coworker wants one. lol. Mom made K a mask out of leftover curtain fabric that K had picked out when she was a toddler. It's got monkeys on it. Now Mom is making one for K's teddy bear.
I have no idea what the fabrics are on these. I know they're washable because Mom wouldn't make curtains out of fabric that can't be washed.

Is Carrot a lefty or a righty? Lefties are, shall we say, unusual in how we hold our pens and pencils. And the damn smudging.

I‘m sorry that others are struggling, but relieved I’m not the only one. This is hard. MPL: my DS has struggled with handwriting too. I’m sure you’ve already looked at the special grips and finger guides they sell...in addition to oped‘s seasoned advice, playing with dough is also recommended for strengthening hands (he‘s a bit old for play doh, but kneading bread and pizza dough or modeling/polymer clay?). DS loves the national geographic gem mining kits (code 15OFFGEM brings it down to $17 on amazon) which have a tool with a pencil-esque grip. Perler beads, pin punching shapes out, hand sewing are all good for fine motor control and sewing might even be good for a cub scout badge requirement. A lot of Montessori primary activities are aimed at developing hand strength and grip for writing later...some of them may be adaptable to a slightly older kid‘s interests. Again, maybe a bit young for him but if you’re interested I can mail you one of these pin punches-long handle makes it more like a pencil to grip (and the shipping for this site was both slow and pricey). Punching out characters etc might make it more interesting. www.montessoriservices.com/wood-handled-puncher?q=punch&nsearch=prm_linkI hesitated a bit to suggest this but DS‘ hand eye coordination has improved since he’s been playing Switch games regularly...hard to say whether that’s causation or correlation though. Also hard to say whether it’s worth the regular fight to get him off the thing. I have absolutely no guilt about letting DS dictate assignment answers occasionally. Also, a bit late for the map assignment but maybe for future similar assignments he could type up and print the list then paste the names on? HTH!

lurkyloo - We've tried the grips. He'll use them for a little while, then I find them abandoned throughout the house...they usually end up under the stove after the kitten finds them. He's been asking me for some kits (King of Random stuff mostly which might be too complicated for him) but I was thinking they would be good to keep him busy while I'm trying to work. I'm going to order that gem one because he loves rocks. Everywhere we go he's buying bags of gems. Thanks for the coupon code!
He's attended a Montessori school since preschool, but the whole pencil grip thing...I don't know if he is just refusing out of stubbornness or he really thinks this is more comfortable. Instead of gripping with his pincer finger and thumb and pressing up against the middle finger he has his middle finger over the pencil as well. It looks incredibly awkward.

minnesotapaintlady I too have an unusual grip when writing. In this picture I rotated my hand so you could see how the fingers all line up. I rest the pen on my ring finger. Rather than trying to completely change the way he holds the pen maybe see if he would back the thumb off a bit so it isn't completely wrapped around the pen. I also think it is interesting that you said you were a lefty and he was a righty. Both my parents are lefties and I'm a righty, at least for writing.

That is seriously really close to how he holds his pencil only he doesn't have his fingers all put together so much so there's not much control. I'm not sure he rests the pen on his ring finger either. I'll have to watch him closer tomorrow. Maybe I'll get a picture of it.

Anyone know how to remove semi-permenant dye from hair, especially blue? Gwen wanted to do her hair mauve and I agreed but did not realize how hard it is to get blue out. I thought I bought the same kit I used before to get purple out but it turns out this is a bleach kit . I tried a spot test and it didn't work. I do not want to cause her hair to fall out by leaving it on for up to 40 minutes (who wrote these instructions?!) So that is $13 down the drain. [img src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png" class="smile" alt=" "] I told her she may have to wait until who knows when we can get into a salon to remove the blue. I'll ask a coworker of mine whose daughter does her own hair what she recommends too. Any ideas? She's not mad at me but she's pretty disappointed.

You’re welcome! I got the code from a fossil kit more than a year ago but it still worked last month Maybe he’d like a break your own geodes kit? Nat Geo geode kits are hit and miss though-I liked the Dancing Bear geodes kit much better. DS also enjoyed the kits where you roll a sheet of beeswax around a wick to make a candle. Given your description I’d probably encourage pincer grip activities...but if he had professional support at school it’s probably best to listen to their recommendations over randos on a message board.

We're going to try a new set up for the kids with them in my office with me. It's not roomy, but we all have our own surface. I'm hoping this will let me be more productive because I won't be wondering if the kids are on track or stuck and running upstairs to check on them every 10 minutes.
Dh is up most days before they start class at 9, but it's not ideal with his work schedule so trying for a better option.

Took the kids to the Wildlife Safari Park yesterday. Looks like all of Nebraska and Iowa are going out there which is good for the zoo. A bison was so close to our car I was nearly able to reach out and touch it, got a really good photo.
That helped our spirits considerably. The kids really enjoyed getting out of the house even if we couldn't leave the car.

I admire Abby's optimism and told her so. She knows that her perfect summer day is probably shot so she's busy working on an alternative plan. I am doing my best to figure out how to make it happen for the girls.
I snagged a wading pool at Wal-mart while I was grocery shopping it's hanging out in my trunk that takes care of swimming. Coneflower Creamery is so far doing well (fingers crossed) and is selling sundae kits to go, so there is her ice cream. Then I can make spaghetti and set up the table so we can go "out to eat" afterwards. Then we can watch zoo videos which aren't the same as going to the zoo but it's what we got.
Gwen is wiser than I give her credit for as well. I noticed the other day she gave DH a hug and asked him if he was all right.
I have not been doing the greatest with managing my anxiety through all this and I know it shows. I am trying hard to do better with it but it's a daily struggle. Which then leads to guilt over how I reacted to the kids, the dog or DH. This freaking sucks.
I am not for a free for all open back to normal situation in the coming month/s.
I just don't want to live like THIS for no 18 months. I can't even handle thinking about the next month let alone 2022. I'm already having panic attacks about the possibility of the girls having to home school next fall and how on Earth we are going to manage that with both of us working because eventually DH's company will expect people in the office. I am not sure how much more flexible employers will be to parents after awhile. That's going to place a huge burden on my mom.

Rather mad at our dance studio and hoping it's an auto email that gets retracted. For all their dancers 2-8 years old THIS FRIDAY they will be hosting a dance party.
How is that 10 people or less?! I know Iowa does not have a stay at home mandate but non-essential services are supposed to be closed and the dance studio is NOT essential!
Glad Abby doesn't know how to use email or really read yet. I deleted it.
I already had a talk with the kids that if the dance studio opens on May 13th we are not allowing them to attend. I get she is a small business but we are still required to pay for classes and no refunds on costumes or recital fees. So she's already made her money off us for the season. Why the rush to open?
I told Gwen I could not live with myself if they got sick because I took them to dance. I said it would be one thing if school started back up or daycare did. We both work and would need to make a tough choice there.
It's another to do something that doesn't affect our ability to provide. Dance is not something the kids need to do to keep a roof over our heads or fed. Yeah I'll be eating the cost of the costumes but money isn't everything. My kids are everything.
I guess this proves without a doubt that I am not a dance mom. How anyone could contemplate taking their kid to dance right now is beyond me.

Our conservatory for the arts is doing all kinds of classes/gatherings online now including dance classes and theatre and bonus they're all free!

I read it again, it's virtual that is a load off. I feel like an ass even though I only voiced my thoughts on here. Guess paranoia is starting to get to me too.
Still not sending them to class unless something drastically changes between now and May 13th. Iowa's cases continue to climb in comparison to other states so I am not confident we're going to be back in business by then. Let other people be the test cases, we'll keep sheltering as much as we reasonably can, let other people be the test cases.
I know we will end up getting it eventually it's only a matter of time. I just don't want to be part of the first or second wave, especially since with the way Iowa is going the second is going to be right on the heels of the first. I don't want to test the governor's statement that Iowa has enough ICU beds. I am going to try to make it till the third or fourth wave thank you.

Poor Abby. They went to pick up her chromebook and she got to see her teacher for two minutes. After that she was a complete hell cat last night complete with a temper tantrum while working on said computer. She misses her teacher, she misses her friends. My heart breaks for her she was so looking forward to school and was really thriving. She had friends her own age and then all of Gwen's friends. Now she's back to stuck with us/my mom. I am going to talk to my BFF and see if we can figure out a way to Skype between her daughter and Abby. That would be something. Gwen is using Snapchat to keep in contact with all her friends, but Abby's friends are too little for that.

I just posted the following on another thread and am posting here, too, because it's really, really important. Surely, everybody is already aware, but just in case...
OMG. There's a story on a local news channel about a woman who was so determined to keep her home virus-free that she cleaned by combining bleach and Lysol and got sick. Gee. What a surprise. Not that she got sick but that there is anybody left anywhere who doesn't know to not combine cleaning chemicals, and especially don't combine bleach and ammonia.
She's lucky she only got sick, and didn't wake up dead.
Please! If this is something you do or have done, stop and never, ever do it again. Please. Don't say "Oh, I've always done this and it's never made me sick." If that's the case, you've just been lucky.
If you didn't know this, you know it now, and you heard it from an old cleaning lady. Never mixing cleaning chemicals is one of the reasons I got to be an old cleaning lady.
While I'm at it, never back down the stairs with your vacuum.

We had 12 participants out of a class of 24. But we got some direction, both on where he's going and what he knows from the District.
- Emails from him will be going out shortly if your kid is failing a subject. No news = good news.
- District (maybe Feds and/or State?) have said nothing the kids do after our last day of real school, so 3/24 or so, will be graded. Stuff can be submitted and he'll evaluate it and provide feedback though. So basically, if your kid was doing ok to great at the end of March, they're going to move on.
- The packets the District is providing are not in line with our curriculum. No teachers had input into them. So it's busywork, which the teacher dislikes.
- Kids should be reading 1 hour a day. Kids should be completing 3 hrs. of math a week.
- Human Growth and Development is now on parents. The 5th grade round of it usually repeats the 4th grade plus more detail so it's not horrible if we don't cover it. Teacher will NOT put the packet on Google Classrooms because he doesn't want to get lynched by some of the parents. If you want it, email him. DH has agreed to go over it with C.
- Teacher's biggest subjects of concern for the kids is Speaking German, Writing German, and Math.

He didn't even notice the noxious fumes.

The doctor's officer just called. They want to reschedule K's appt for the 2nd round of the HPV vaccine. I knew it was in April but couldn't remember the date and haven't gotten a reminder email. I'm great with rescheduling it. So now it's June 8th, 10am. They doublechecked and we're still within the time frame so she only needs 2 shots and not 3.

My mom said my grandfather regularly cleaned with ammonia and bleach. She was shocked he never knew any better considering he was in Korea. A LOT of people don't know to mix chemicals. They also don't know you need to dilute. My dad walked off his job the one day because a guy decided to clean the counters with straight bleach. WITHOUT WEARING GLOVES to boot! Gassed everyone in the building. Dad told the supervisor if that's how the dude is going to clean then he's leaving after it happens and he expects to be paid. If they want employees in front to show up tell the idiot to not do that anymore. Guy is damn lucky he didn't land himself or someone else in the hospital.

I know my mom cleaned the oven with ammonia. I'm trying to remember if she added bleach.
It was an oven that was built in to the wall and I remember waking up to the smell of ammonia. My bedroom had two doors and one opened in to the kitchen. Oven was next to door.
I know she put an old sock in the vent to keep most of the smell in the oven.

Drama, are you connected within Facebook or have phone numbers of any of the parents of Abby’s school friends? We’ve FaceTime’d a couple of times with M’s BFF from daycare and both girls love seeing each other. They’re not old enough to do anything on their own, so the friend’s mom and I hold the phones and the girls run around and show off things to each other. We also send mail to her friend - something she colored and maybe a few stickers or whatever. Both kids love getting mail.
