There's a chance golf might be Carrot's thing. My Dad took him a couple times towards the end of last Summer and said he was a "natural". I'm not sure if that's just grandpa pride or if he's legitimately good, but he bought him a set of clubs so I'm going to try and find something for this Summer. I keep hoping he can find something he can compete in. He's a good piano player, and I'm hoping he gets involved in band as well, but a sport would be nice.

C is trying to make a case to get fort.nite. I'm impressed that he's actually looking for articles and info that could change my mind.
But fortnite...ugh. It's really not a hill I want to bend on. I also don't know how to help him process his defeatist attitude. He gets focused on something and life just sucks if he can't have it, is never going to get it, life is awful, etc. We've gone through it multiple times and can point out the previous times and their happy endings to him but he can't accept it until he gets whatever it is.

Rae - that's one I would stay away from too. Video games like that aren't going to make his attitude any better. Is there a school counselor he can talk to? DD11 has been going every other week since school started, and I can tell she's learning to cope better. She was reluctant at first, but I basically told her that it was a safe space to go and vent about how awful we are LOL.

I hate Fortnite...well...to be fair, I'm pretty much anti-video games in general, not that one in particular, but Carrot gets whatever he wants at his dad's so of course has that on several platforms. On the plus side, it seems to have run his course with him and he isn't Fortnite everything all the time anymore.

Okay, y'all, listen up! I realize my DS will be 59 (!) soon, but I didn't get to brag on him when he was 3 and taught himself to read. He's a self-taught programmer/web developer/hardware and software whiz but felt like he needed to be a professional cybersnoop, too, and passed the test this morning. He's now a CompTIA (Computer Technology Industry Association) Certified Cybersecurity Analyst to go along with some Microsoft certifications he's earned over the years. It's a big deal, not one of those "five day class and guaranteed pass" things. His momma (that would be me) is proud, especially considering that for all practical purposes he quit school before he finished 9th grade because it bored him. At 18 he took the GED and scored in the 99th percentile. Only 1% of those whose tested did better. What's an appropriate reward? Take him to the zoo? The aquarium? Disneyworld? Tell him he can watch an extra hour of TV after supper?

I don't see him talking to the school counselor or honestly her being very helpful. He's too quiet and she has kids with much bigger problems.

On the plus side, it seems to have run his course with him and he isn't Fortnite everything all the time anymore. It's nothing like the games that actually hold his interest so I imagine he would burn through it pretty quickly if he had access and be on to the next must have. But I really wasn't expecting this big of a push from him until he was at least 12 or 13 and I still just don't like the game. I told him we were going to start reading hunger games if he likes the survival piece so much. Maybe we'll start that tonight while I keep thinking about it.

raeoflyte have you read Hunger Games? I read it a few years ago for my book club and was shocked by the amount and level of violence. I wasn’t expecting that for young adult fiction.

Abby: "Mommy one of my sight words this week is but. It's not the one you poop out of though". My OG tutor girl was always threatening, I'm going to add the extra t... I am... when that was new, lol. And she Always said the full name of a local dam any time dame came up. Half Point Dam she read it all the time. And for awhile when we did the old weld she'd call it, in an exaggerated whisper, 'the elderly word'... because old was mean...

It's been a few years. I remember the last one being scary with the mutants, but not as much from the first one (except of course the entire thing is a gruesome topic). I should hold off on that plan. Admittedly part of me is hoping to jolt him into looking at the violence to see why I don't like the concept of the game, while also assuming that he won't really understand it. My sister got him a webcam for Christmas because he wants to make you tube videos (of him gaming, making fun of cheesy movies, and doing science experiments) which I've also been adamantly opposed to. Now I'm thinking maybe giving a little lee-way there. He's being so calm and mature about it every time it comes up he's messing with my head.

Gwen to Abby "Why do you always pick red lipstick?"
Abby to Gwen "Because I'm a fashionista"
Boom.

K absolutely loathes fortnite and pitches a fit whenever C mentions it so that's pretty much taken care of that one. He's gotten interested in Lego Dimensions again. So that. Minecraft and the wrestling ones are the ones he plays. Both kids watch DH play assorted Wulfenstein games which I'm not thrilled about.
Robox is the one I've put my foot down on. I've heard some not good things about their chat system and kids being targeted. So nope.

Wait... what ? That's the only game my daughters play because we don't have any gaming systems and they can do it online.

Roblox is Carrot's latest thing. I have no idea if he uses the chat feature at his dad's but he doesn't at home.

I did get to have the fun chat with both kids, separately because that's how it worked out, about active shooters.

Gwen and Abby play Roloblox. Abby isn't old enough to use the chat feature. Gwen is but I know she's not because she leaves her account logged on my phone. I check her accounts pretty regularly because she never logs out. I don't plan on letting her know I can access them without her giving me the password.

DD plays Roblox with her cousins. They play on their iPads and have their iPhones on facetime while they yell at each other.
I know she chats with my nieces friends (they live 2 hours away) and I know that random people try to join them because they get a perverse pleasure yelling "stranger danger" and telling them to go away. she also tells me everytime someone else joins or tries to join.
She's 12 and fully aware that freaks out there pretend they are teens to get to know them.

Harper finished her antibiotic for her second bout of strep throat on Saturday.
Today, she was diagnosed with her third bout.
Ugh. We are off to the ENT next Thursday to see what is up.
And we are having to cancel our Harper/Mom trip out to CO in March to see my brother and go skiing because my SIL is having her gallbladder removed.

A kid posted on Instagram that they were going to bomb and shoot up my daughter’s middle school. The post has been removed and the school says the situation has been handled but the parents are upset. My DD says ‘all’ her friends are staying home tomorrow but we’re sending her to school. I imagine there will be extra security.

I don't know if it was here where I posted that I was getting the IUD. Best decision ever. I used to have awful periods with really heavy bleeding. This time around the time came and I felt a little crampy and knew it was coming. The period was so light that it was little more than spotting. Now it's gone and all is well. The doctor said they will eventually stop all together. She said 5-7 years before we have to replace it. She said basically when it stops doing what I want it to do as far as bleeding since I don't need it for contraception.
Since the average age of menopause is 52, she said I could go through it with the second one and not have the awful periods associated with that. I didn't ask about the other symptoms of menopause, but if I can just not do all the bleeding, I'll still be better off than without it. Yay!

School would be in session and they would increase security.

I just got home from picking up my daughter from school. She called me crying from the restroom that her stomach hurt and she was all crampy. I'm sure it is anxiety about the whole situation. She's sitting on the couch doing homework and is feeling fine. The front office was crazy busy; phones were ringing constantly and multiple parents were picking up 'sick' kids.
TBH I think this would be the safest day to be at school. My fear is there's a kid who is seeing all this drama and wants to capitalize... and has dumb ass parents who own assault weapons.
