“Train water”? As in the dripping water from the train in the subway? I didn’t read them all. I do remember reading Snowbound - in that one Stacey and her mom were broken down in the car and she was having issues due to her blood sugar dropping. No, a commuter train or maybe Amtrak from CT to NY. Her diabetes was raging out of control and she was thirsty and had to drink water from the train's bathroom sink with her hands. Why do I remember this 30 years later? UNCLEAR. Oh. Ew. I’m too broke to have taken Amtrak but I’d drink out of an Amtrak toilet before drinking from a NJ Transit bathroom sink!!

Abby cracked me up last night. I have a pair of safety googles in my purse for work (I have to have them on at all times so I have pairs stashed). She got ahold of them put them on and starts making computer noises. "Look mommy I'm working like you!"

I also remember she said that hair looks best when it’s permed but the perm is fresh enough it looks natural. Such a weird thing to remember.

Ok, well besides being fuzzy on the sundowning thing, I have no freaking clue what the babysitters club is. They were only like the best series ever for girls born in the 80s! 😉 That explains it. I was born in the 60's.

I read The Babysitters Club when I was kid and I don’t remember any of the stories or that 1 of the characters had diabetes. 😱😜

I believe that was from the same book I referenced - Snowbound. It was like double the length of the usual BSC book.

Speaking of great works of literature... What books did you read as a kid that you're excited for your kids to read?

There are books I enjoyed sharing with my kids as we discovered them together. But honestly, they never loved what I had loved as a younger reader. I never even got them to start Anne of Green Gables.
They did indulge me a little with Mrs Piggle Wiggle and Great Brain, etc. they listened to The Hero and the Crown.... etc. but those things aren’t the books I will remember sharing with them.

I tried to get Gwen into Sweet Valley Twins when I found almost the entire series for FREE but she wasn't interested. I donated them to the little free library at the hospital.
No interest in Nancy Drew either.
She likes Bunnicula though.
We have totally different tastes in books right now. I don't buy her books now unless she specifically asks cause I'm usually wrong.😧

My daughters 5th grade teacher recommended Are You There God, it’s Me, Margaret Oh, Judy Blume. I remember that a long time ago several of her books were on the "10 most banned books" in (school?) libraries in the US. For reference we had all but one of those books. I may have scr*wed up my kids for their entire lives with the books I bought for them

I will admit Sweet Valley did not age well. It's a firm 80s/90s series. Which may explain why my kid doesn't like them😛 We ended up getting in an argument about Jem. That abomination of a movie is NOT Jem! I made her watch an episode on YouTube. Shit man that show aged badly. However my point still stands.

Well we're not good at delayed gratification in this house. I got a Hatchimal advent calendar for the kids.
We opened them all. Mommy helped😰
It comes with a little Christmas motif and now they are busy arranging their prizes.

Hoping my kids prefer stories that aren't just about popularity and dating. At one time all I wanted was for my boys to keep reading. Somewhere around age 10 they each went through a period where reading was not all that interesting. So for the oldest (we were living in Bangkok at the time) I got my hands on everything I could relating to baseball: sports illustrated and a bi-weekly newsletter one of my friends had a subscription to and passed down to me, any books that were not too off color, just anything. Fast forward 4 years (now living in S'pore) and DS2 went through the same phase. This time was a little easier since his interest was computers. Magazines And books a-plenty. None written for children but that didn't bother him. He was mesmerized. It worked for them though since they kept reading and went back to other subjects both fiction and non-fiction. Last week I received an email from my DDIL that she had looked at DS2s Xmas wishlist. All books - how boring . Note that she comes from a very similar home and is raising her little boys the same way. Books are in their blood!

Hoping my kids prefer stories that aren't just about popularity and dating. I mean, the books were about being teenagers. There was also dealing with disabilities (one of their friends was deaf I believe), divorce, sexual assault (attempted, if I remember correctly), car accidents, suicide, peer pressure around drinkingand sex, parents divorcing, among other things. It wasn't deep, but that doesn't mean it was all pool parties either. That's also before they started traveling through time. They MAY have been intimately involved in both the San Francisco fire AND prohibition. SVH were, like BabySitters Club, morality tales about the challenges facing middle/upper-middle class teenagers in the 80s. For the most part, they were talking about things kids might come in contact with, but maybe hadn't yet, or their friends had or would. The dating and fashion and friendship was just a framework to push a world where kids came clooose to dangerous situations but it (usually) didn't go too far and wind up with real consequences.

Did anyone else read Sunfire teen historical romances? I still have all of my Sunfires. Except Cassie, the one about the girl who was kidnapped as a child by the Iroquois (I think) and returned to her parents as a teen. I look for it in every used book store I go into. I want the whole set!!! How about the Girls of Canby Hall?

I so want Cassie and Caroline. I only have 4. But i only buy what i find used at thrift stores and yard sales. Its kind of a treasure hunt thing.
Those were the only 'romancy' or super 'girlie' type books i read when i was younger.

Dd6 and I just finished the best Christmas pageant ever. I read most of it, and had her do some of the shorter sentences. She got a kick out of the herdman family. I didn't realize it's the first in the series. Requested the next one from the library.
Just before that we read the littles. We have the brain ready to go.
This summer I read them island of the blue dolphins which really made an impression on me when I was about 10. They were engrossed but they may have been a little young.
Going to try little house on the Prairie soon.
Similar topic, I saw the wonder years is now on hulu. Going to watch that together and see if it holds everyone's attn.
DD10 and I tried 7th Heaven a few weeks ago. She liked it, but I can't get past knowing the main actor's true life.

The babysitters club graphic novels make me batty. It's not like the originals are that tough to read.
The BSC show is on hulu or netflix. It's clearly from the 80s but DD10 still likes it. Helps that she's in that age where she really wants to babysit but isn't quite old enough.

Best Christmas Pageant Ever is a classic. Family Under the Bridge and Katherine Patterson's short story book are also good for the holiday season.
What do you mean by 'the brain' ?

Best Christmas Pageant Ever is the only Christmas book I have. I love it!!!
I am the auntie who buys books so I am going to be looking for Mandarin Chinese language kiddie books for the triplets. Just asked their mum. She speaks Cantonese AND Mandarin but Mandarin is apparently the more wide-spread one so that's what they'll be learning. This is going to be interesting!
I have a large Nancy Drew collection with some of my mother's books. Bobbsey Twins, Happy Hollisters, Trixie Belden, Cherry Ames - Student Nurse, Vickie Barr - Flight Stewardess. God I feel old now.
