So, Carrot got his swim level placement for after school care and he made it to level 4! He's been at 3 for forever it seems and just a few years ago he wouldn't even put his head under water. So, I'm showering praises on him telling him how proud I am and he turns to me all excited, and blurts out, "NOW I CAN JOIN THE SWIM TEAM!!

Thanks, all! She does like crafts, reading, and dance, so I'm not totally shopping blind. I ended up finding a highly reviewed make your own charms craft kit that I think she'll like, plus some new books.

Cosmo needs to be doused in gasoline and burned. Why all the articles about how to be a sex goddess? Men really aren't that difficult to figure out!

I have 2 13 year old nieces and we try to get what works for them for what they are interested in.
My brother's 13 year old is all about dance. So we buy her exercise things she wants and give her money for extra dance classes.
My sister's 13 year old got a dog for her birthday in May, so this year is a lot about the dog. She loves books and often gets books for presents.
My sister's 17 year old girl over the last couple years we have gotten her clothes that fit her style (cat t-shirts and sweat pants).
I doubt there is a one size fits all. When my SIL's daughter was 12/13 we got her soccer stuff.
Go with her interest.

My teen is all about gift cards. I mean, he would like other things, but he ALWAYS likes gift cards. He has no job and no income, so just having the ability to go into the gas station and get a soda or some other junk food I never buy him is huge. His favorite gift card is the local gas station chain, followed by Taco Bell...

Teen Vogue may be a good option. I really like a lot of their articles recently. 12 may be a bit young for that, though.

So, DH took to heart what his counselor said yesterday. When I got home from work, instead of sitting on the couch like he normally does, he was making dinner for the kids. He stayed off his computer until they went to bed! And their behavior was much better having him involved. He even sat and ate dinner at the table with us!!! I know it was hard for him but I am glad he did it.
I am working through some trauma healing with my counselor, and it's brought back my suicidal thoughts. It's scary how normal those thoughts are in my head. But I am learning to say that they are there - to acknowledge them out loud. And then they don't seem nearly as strong and they don't stick around as long. It's a slow hot mess, but I can already see differences being made so that's good. And it's nice to know that some of my "quirks" are actually adaptive behaviors and quite normal. Makes me feel not so alone and broken. I highly recommend the Courage To Heal workbook - for any kind of trauma or abuse.

My poor baby - daycare called and M tripped over her feet while walking, and bit the inside and outside of her lip. Calls to both the pediatrician's nurse line and the children's hospital nurse line later, plus DH going up to check on her, and we've decided that for now at least, she doesn't need an ER trip. Her teeth went through skin on the outside below her lip/above the chin, but thankfully not too deep/gaping. Gah - I hate dealing with blood stuff. Falls happen, but yuck. And I'm sure it won't be the last time.

Picking up a rx for sertraline this afternoon. I overlooked it due to the big panic attacks/dizziness episodes, but I've been having smaller panic attacks almost every day and the way I feel all the damn time is starting to depress me. Anxiety actually went up when I started a cyclic hormonal BCP (which again points to hormonal issues!)
So starting the ssri, planning on staying on it if it works until Q is weaned and I am menstruating regularly AND off hormonal BC, THEN will discuss weaning off.
I also have an MRI to rule out ENT reasons for vertigo/dizziness, and an echo scheduled. Psychologist suggested I get other causes ruled out and my PCP and the ENT were very patient and did not treat me like I should be ignored because I'm losing my damn mind. Psychologist also suggested bringing up the idea of an endocrinologist to my PCP the next time we talk(thanks, lady, that's something I wasn't already worried about!).
Not looking forward to titrating onto the sertraline though.

Just found out that my insurance does not have car rental so trying to decide between Uber and car rental what will be cheaper.
So the bleeding continues...

You probably already know and I certainly don't want to pile on your misfortune, but your carseat should most likely be replaced even if she wasn't in it. This may be covered by insurance.
Sorry - I hate dealing with car issues and an accident is the worst because dealing with ins can be painful.

My 5 year old DD woke up this morning with her right eye almost completely swollen shut. I took her to the pediatrician and it's a stye and not the highly contagious pink eye... so I guess that's good . Anyway, took her to school and asked to speak to the nurse and request that she put a warm compress on my daughter's eye once a day while it lasts (I'll do the other three times at home). She asked if I had a doctor's note. I told her it's just a warm compress - not medication. Doesn't matter, can't do it without a note. Also, "the school doesn't have any warm water". I just looked at her and I must have looked very perplexed because she said she'd figure that one out. The nurse was actually pleasant and asked me to write down the contact information and she'd call the doctor's office and ask them to fax over authorization. I guess I'm just shocked that that requires a note. Medication I understand but a request to place a warm compress on a child's eye should not require formal authorization from a doctor.

EVERYTHING requires a note now. It's how the school covers their ass because there is at least one parent out there in the world that would threaten to sue (or at least they assume there is) for putting a warm washrag on their kids' face without talking to them first. I had a style, it sucks she has my sympathy. Nothing like being at work and hearing "OMG what is wrong with your eye?!" every time a new person comes into the lab.

I disagree with this one too. The doctor gave permission to give this child medication when he prescribed it. As far as I'm concerned the only person who needs to give the school nurse permission is ME. I'm their parent, I can authorize them to give them a prescription that is clearly labelled for the child with a recent date on it. They have no other need of permission TYVM. (Yes, I know that's not how it works, but it still ticks me off to this day to have to to get separate crap for the same thing.)

I had a style, it sucks she has my sympathy. Nothing like being at work and hearing "OMG what is wrong with your eye?!" every time a new person comes into the lab. OMG This is the one thing I'm really loving about private school with older son. As long as it's not illegal drugs, they don't care what he brings to school. He gets headaches a lot and he couldn't even have ibuprofen on him at the public. He got caught with it once and all hell broke loose. Then I did get a doctor to write a note saying he could have it but they wouldn't give it back to him because it was 2 weeks over the expiration date (and he wasn't allowed to have it on him anyhow, he would have had to go to the nurses office to get any from his bottle if he wanted it). Private doesn't care. They don't care about disciplining him without there being a big meeting of 10 different people either. I was so sick of getting called in to come up with "plans" for what to do in public. Do whatever the hell you think will work! You're the professionals. I just found out a few days ago during casual conversation with DS that he has been going to see a counselor every week at the private school who is helping him deal with stress and to organize himself better. They just decided to do this last year after he had an outburst in class once last Winter and apparently it's going really well and he thinks it's helping. No calls to me to sit and talk about it or come up with a plan, no piles of permission slips and disclaimers to sign, they just did it. Freaking refreshing.

Looking at convertible car seats. Is it worth the extra cost to get the ones that can be used as a booster? Seems like those are about $100 more, which is pretty steep.

They don't have warm water? That can't possibly be true, right? Of course it's not true! Just turn on the hot tap in either the kitchen or the restroom and there's warm water. I don't know what the nurse was thinking.
