Ok so what is "it" for you?
Let's say all your retirement accounts are fully funded, no debts, plenty of savings, and already give regular charity donations.
International trips? Remodel the house? new house? boat? diamonds?
"Can't take it with you" expression got me to thinking. What am I forgoing? Where does it end? Even if you have everything wouldn't you want more? more trips, houses, boats, jewelry?

We are going to buy a car in the next few weeks. We are remodeling our bathroom (although, that is mostly deferred maintenance issues, the lap of luxury part is just a bonus) We travel at least every year.

When I graduated from 8th grade, my grandmother gave me an amethyst set in white gold. I've always loved the color and the light in that stone, but the setting broke after 50+ years of wear. I got a bonus in April and spent $1,500 on a couple of diamonds to mount on either side. I took at all to the jeweler and found that I was a little off on what I'd expected to pay for a new platinum setting- it cost $2,000. I could have saved $700 getting 14k gold but I know myself- I would have ended up kicking myself for not getting platinum. The setting turned out to be a solid, heavy one- heavier than my engagement ring, which is also a 3-stone- and it's beautiful. But it turned out to be one expensive ring!

I'd "buy" 4 weeks of additional vacation time at work and take a month off to just relax. Hopefully my wife could do that also. The hardest part is finding a time we could both break off from our projects.

Stuff for the house I think. Bamboo floors, new back patio/deck, minor kitchen face lift, and my pool table. Not necessarily in that order.

I cannot think of anything I really need to buy or spend money on outside of my regular month expenses.

I think the question was what would you buy just because, not stuff you need to buy. You can't think of anything you want that you don't currently have? Not even just a little bit?

Travel. I need to get a passport and go to Europe. I'm in my 30's already, and I want to go before I have a family.

At this point, I'd probably mostly buy more travel. I'd also have a gas range installed in the kitchen instead of the electric one I have now.

I really don't know what I would buy for myself, but I would buy DH the corvette he's always wanted.

Early retirement and build a family compound. Both are already being planned, but to be able to do it sooner would rock. Even if the family compound doesn't happen, DH and I are very fortunate to be homebodies. We love where we live, we are close to DH's family (whom we enjoy enough to want to live in a family compound with), and we do a lot of outdoor recreational activities, like fishing and kayaking. Would continue to travel a couple times a year to see my family. On a smaller scale, we'd loosen up on the grocery bill and A/C. I don't know though. Seems like that born and bred stinginess would be hard to break. I have family members that are millionaires who still buy extra sweaters instead of turning on the heat. It's a disease. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Finally build our deck (after 4.5 years). ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) I would get a great car to commute to work in... one with killer gas mileage and cruise control and not 170k miles on it. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) (current car does get decent gas mileage) ETA: If money was really no object, then we would build a 40X60 shop out back with a portion of it completely finished as a studio apartment for anyone who was coming out to visit us or family members down on their luck... plus it would a great place for DS to play.

House stuff... there are so many projects I want to do (extend the deck, tear down the shed and replace it with a small garage, build a bar in the basement, cover up the ugly concrete outside the basement with stone veneer, etc.), but each costs the equivalent of about 2 years' worth of our "house maintenance" fund. Hopefully after 10 years we'll have most of this done, but I'm impatient - I want it now!
I also want a Mercedes Kompressor ;D

International trips (it has been 5.5 years for me!) and a new car. A bigger house too, but I don't need that right away.

I believe your post was directed at me Dark, is that correct? Living in a small apartment with very limited storage has the advantages of not being able to accumumate stuff, because there is no place to put it. The only real, what I would classify as a luxury that I have is a vacation home at the NJ shore. My 2002 Ford Explorer purrs like a kitten. The other advantage I have is if I need to tell the buffoons I work for to shove it, I can do it fairly easily and have nothing to worry about.

SF...my dream is to own a home at the Jersey shore! The time (money) never seems to be right. I'm hoping to retire there. I like Monmouth County. I really wish I could buy something now to use on weekends/summers. I live for the beach. I have 11.5 yrs to go before I can retire. Even then I'm not sure I can afford it. Do you want to live there one day?

I'd probably save more to be able to retire earlier.

A trip to Italy. The only thing keeping me from this is the fear of being in small spaces with lots of sweaty people who snore. But, I'm trying to talk myself into it. I'm not very far though.

I'd like my yard landscaped, deck stained and interior painted. Also a high rise toilet seat. Gas range to replace the current electric one.
After that---travel!
ETA: geothermal to heat and cool my house

Reasonably/moderately prices houses/condos can be had, you just have to know where to look. You have to go further south into southern Ocean County and Atlantic County. In fact there is a small place, three bedroom, bungalow style home just two doors down from me listed at $125,000. I am down there nearly every weekend from late April through early November. Stay away from the tourist areas.

New kitchen. The 80's funk style isn't really working for me.
