I replaced many of my lightbulbs with the CFL type about four years ago and they still work fine. I also have two 29-year-old 50 gal gas water heaters and two 29-year-old central AC/Heating units that still work great. I will not buy $50 light bulbs anytime soon.

Seriously. We'll have to light our home with TVs, computers, and cheap candles if that happens. THAT will bring our electric bill down!

Go look at the numbers I ran Krickitt, doesn't it seem more cost effective to you? What do you pay for electricity per kWh?

Unless those coal-fired power plants are inside your home (like the CFLs are), this isn't a relevant comparison... Keep telling yourself that Ed..... The point was...if you're not worried about mercury emissions from electricity generation at coal plants, worrying about mercury from a broken CFL is pretty pointless. I know quite a few of the guys and gals that work at this local coal fired plant. They are there 8-12 hours / day...a good portion of those I know live within a few miles of this plant (aka it is pretty much "inside their house") they're not dropping from Mercury poisoning. Quit getting all worked up over nothing. Now...if you're the total klutz type that is totally unable to change a light bulb without breaking it...I'd say do yourself a favor and pay the $50 to buy LED's.

It's not just broken bulbs. Here, it's law that you have to dispose of any flourescent bulbs at a designated waste site. Most people don't comply and just hide them in the trash, so they wind up in the landfill.

I'm not questioning the numbers. I am saying I can't afford $50 light bulbs. Seriously. We are a large family on a tight budget. We work magic to shop smart and keep ourselves fed and clothed. Even if used things may not last as long that is what we can afford right this minute. Saving money in the long run makes sense-- IF you have the money to get it started TODAY. Many people that make laws, etc, do not seem to understand or care that many of us do not. And, no, I don't want a gov't subsidy for light bulbs. Absurd!

Ug, not a flop at all, LEDs are being used in gyms and parking garages on a regular basis off the top of my head.

I think the LED bulbs will be more popular if they can get the price down.

I agree. But at the prices in the article, it will not be a comercial success for the homeowner market.

The Gov't thinks a 75 w LED will be $10 by 2015- I think a 100 W is too much for home use anyway. It will be alright!!Thanks for the scare though!! ;D

I agree. But at the prices in the article, it will not be a comercial success for the homeowner market. Not at first. I think they will become more popular as businesses with the money to invest buy them to lower electrical costs. That will then trickle down to the homeowner. They'll never be as cheap as incandescents, but they'll be a lot less than $50.00.

Depends on what you're lighting as to how powerful a bulb you need. I'm fine with 75s, but I'm in an apartment.

When they finally came for you lightbulb there was nobody left to help you.

Yes, I did. That boondoggle was solely for the benefit of Dupont.

I had seen a show on cable that talked about these bulbs, and they just happen to be made in China.

No matter how high the wattage of the light bulbs you put in your house, there's always going to be at least one dim bulb in it. -( ) -( ) And way to fight the man! Nobody tells you how much light to have in your house! Although ... I don't recall any totalightarian regimes, but who knows? Stay tuned! Are those $50 light bulbs because they're that hard to make or are they making a lot of money off of it?

I decided just yesterday not to run for President. But maybe I should rethink that strategy and run on a light-bulb campaign issue?
