went to see True Grit, had to sit through 15 minutes of movie trailers...listed start time was 3:05, but that is when the trailers started, movie did not start until 3:20...this is probably why I don't go to see many movies....

The previews don't usually bother me, unless they're all for crappy movies.

I have more of a problem with the so-called 3-D movies that have hardly any 3-D effects yet add a nice little surcharge to the admission price and yes--- you are still 15 minutes+ a captive audience to the previews.

I should also note that I'm generally not a fan of going to the movies at all -- I have an awesome 55" tv, and a great home theater system. It's a much better experience, since I can drink beer while watching.

Fifteen minutes is long enough to make me momentarily forget what movie I came to watch.
It's too much.

I don't mind 15 minutes when I'm in a movie theater, but I have some dvds with 15 minutes that they won't let you fast forward through . . . most notably Disney.

DH and I have been together since 1997. We have been to probably 10 countries together, but not to a movie. Maybe we're stuck in a time warp, but to us the cost of movies and the "food" they serve has gone out of sight, and they're generally too loud or the theatre is over air-conditioned. We're also not into Harry Potter or movies that look like giant video games, I don't like action moves and he doesn't like chick flicks. I always make sure to get my ration of those on transatlantic flights! (I saw "Eat. Pray. Love." coming home from London last month.) Occasionally we rent a movie but they keep closing down Blockbusters and there aren't enough movies we want to see to justify Netflix.
And if I went to a commercial theatre I'd arrive 15 monutes late. Don't need the commercials, thank you.

True Grit was a real good movie, I am debating whether it is better than my favorite western-Tombstone

That's why I think there are only certain movies that are worth going to see in 3D. Like, I felt like I got my money's worth out of Tron both times I went to see it in 3D (yes, I'm a total nerd for sci-fi special effects). I would have kicked myself if I had missed it in theaters. I suppose other people felt the same way about Avatar. And the 3D stuff is still so new that I thought watching special 3D previews was pretty cool. Sometimes, the previews are the things worth talking about later. I mean, really, Cowboys and Aliens? And then there are the movies where the preview was almost better than the actual movie, like RotK, which is like watching a super awesome epic sci-fi fantasy movie in about 3 minutes. If I watch that on YouTube now I still get goosebumps. What I dislike more and more is the actual commercials ahead of time. Ugh.

Previews are fun. But are the movies worth the $10 tickets now? NO - I can buy a used DVD for $10 or less Taking the family to movies costs $40 to $60 depending how many of us go. That buys a lot of Netflix!! I think theaters & cable TV are pricing themselves into oblivion!

"I'm Rob Base and I came to get down! I'm not internationally known.." sorry I saw the name and immediately went there! LOL previews don't bother me in the theaters but they do when watching a DVD (and I can't skip past them) in theaters the purpose is for the late arriver's and long lines and for advertisements

I agree that it's the cost of a "movie night" more-so than the previews or anything else that is prohibitive for us. Since we've got little ones you have to factor in the cost of a baby sitter on top of the tickets - and forget about paying for refreshments, I'll just smuggle themin

Tron both times
HOW did you sit through that twice? It was sooooo bad... and the 8 minutes of good effects didn't come close to making the ticket worth it...
I did see Avatar 3 times in 3d though... good 3d is worth it... because i will not be getting that on my tv... I though resident evil was pretty good 3d... and all the kids loved Megamind in 3d (I loved the soundtrack)... But my kids liked the old clash of the titans much better than the new one... lol... yeah, we do like movies... but no one will go with me to see True Grit today... sigh, guess i'll have to wait for dvd...

NO... Tron is NOT good 3d in my opinion or good movie at all actually... well there are about 8 minuts of good effects (the ones you see in previews with them 'putting on' their cycles/planes and chasing), but NOT even close to worth it in my book... lots and lots of inane dialouge... this should NOT have been a talking movie, and if it was going to be, it should have been good talk at least... i would not go... but that's just me... and my mom/sis/husband/kids, who all saw it together...

I'm usually more horrified by the $12 admission price for an adult ticket or the $17,000 for popcorn + soda than the previews.

We got Netflix last month and really seem to get our money's worth. There are a lot of documentaries that can be streamed. We have streamed more movies than we have got in the mail and it has worked out well for us.
I too hate spending the money on movie tickets but it the DS have one they really would like to see we get discount tickets from the Credit Union. We stop and get some candy before hand but we are all suckers for movie popcorn and a drink so as much as it kills me to spend the money we usually do.

I guess maybe one of the reasons we still go is that it isn't all that expensive around us... and adult, evening, 3D ticket is 11.50, true, but normal matinees are only 6.50... and every so many tickets bought, we get a free one... We also go to the drive in a lot in the summer, and that's cheaper still...

How was the movie though? I like the original, trying to figure out wether we should go to the theatre or rent it. Yeah, 15 minutes worth of previews is kind of a bit much... We just spent $40 to take the kids to see Yogi Bear yesterday....worst kids movie I have ever seen! I kept wishing we had waiting to rent it then I would have only been out $5

Did anyone see Black Swan? (How many more posts until i'm not new?) Friends of our were supposed to see Yogi today and I told them to save their money. I let the girls alternate in picking and my youngest REALLY wanted to see it. Even she wanted to leave half way through it! It was that bad. I heard great things about Tangled but nothing about the other two.

We did see Tangled. It was ok. The kids really liked it, i thought it was typical disney, nothing extraordinary... I liked Megamind much better, but then, like i said... it had some good music which helped...
