QUESTION FOR GALS WHO HAVE JOINED THE GROCERY CHALLENGE IN THE LAST YEAR OR WHO CAN REMEMBER:I just invited someone from the Smart Spending board to come join us. I don't know if they will, but I wanted to give them a personal invite. I have been on the GC so long, all I know is what I feel in my heart when I welcome newbies to the board. I never really know how THEY feel. So, here's the question. Please take a moment to think back. When you first came to the board, how long did it take before you felt comfortable with "us"; not necessarily with coupons and doing the deals, but with us as a group and posting? If it took you a while, please say so. I am always looking for ways to make newbies feel welcome and am wondering if there is something I/we need to change AFTER their initial welcome. TIA Dancin, I hate to say this but I have been on and off here for a while but still don't feel like part of the hounds. I am still very much a newbie (play to continue working on it) and we go so fast that I sometimes feel that people don't care about my post because they do not respond. I have noticed that a few people do respond and it has increased now that we switch over every month but I could see that as a problem. Now, I know it is in my head, not you ladies because I have gotten help for quite a few of you and chatted one on one with a couple and I know (in my head) that people just don't always have a comment (and we do go so fast). But, I do have to remind myself sometimes.

Dancin, I couldn't believe you even welcome people. I've been on these forums for years and moderate others and never welcome people. ha!
But as you know, I jumped in asking ten billion questions and even hitting you up in personal email to ask ten billion more. Everyone here has been so helpful and saved me a ton of scratch. THANKS HOUNDS.
And I am shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, some of you didn't know about the date on the spine of inserts. I thought everyone knew that. My big problem is when people send me inserts (I am grateful) but cut out something from the back page so the date is gone. Then I hit up the database and start putting in some Qs to figure out where it came from.

I really do TRY to comment on a post or two made by a newbie (after they have been welcomed) just so they DO feel included. I know that you and I connected because you used to live pretty close to me. I have considered you an irregular regular for a long time - in other words, you don't post often, but you post regularly off and on; maybe some of the other gals do too. Keep hangin' with us, okay.

QUESTION FOR GALS WHO HAVE JOINED THE GROCERY CHALLENGE IN THE LAST YEAR OR WHO CAN REMEMBER: I felt welcome from the very start. I had found kindred spirits if you will. RE: Lena Having read through that thread on SS, wanted to add my 2 cents, which, along with an additional $2.23 will get you on the subway in NYC. The warm welcomes here and on SS is probably what precipitated Lena posing her questions. It's typically a very open and edifying environment. There actually were one or two posters comments that appeared to resonate with her and she expressed her thanks to them and admitted to the need to reconsider some of what she is doing . Other posts she became frustrated with and in her usual adversarial style lashed out and attacked otherwise well meaning responses. Her communication style is aggressive at best and tends to alienate. The bottom line is that she kept responding which tells this reader that the entries were worth responding to. She seems to be someone who must often exact control and be correct. That being said I suspect that many of the posts, even those that she lambasted(truly uncalled for), provided some valid truths regarding how she manages her shopping and planning. In the end, the information and strategies were not totally lost on her, so take heart, you all do a great job of sharing, informing and educating. P.S. From her postings it seems that she's pregnant with number 3?, in school, parenting a few little ones and running a household. No excuse for rudeness, and I'm no shrink, but I think that she uses the threads as her psychological whipping boy.. She actually is otherwise a reasonably articulate and forthright individual.

So I decided to start welcoming people so that any lurkers who were "on the edge" might be encouraged to jump in and introduce themselves too. In addition, I guess I'm just a friendly person.

I am not so sure that some of the other stuff (the basics for saving money on groceries) has not been lost on her. We have had the EXACT SAME discussion with her in the past (I just didn't realize she was the same person until a few posts into the thread). I don't think she's stupid. I think she gets it, but doesn't really want to apply it so it makes her feel better to prove to herself that she should just continue with what she has been doing. I feel that my time was wasted on her, but probably not completely wasted because maybe someone else participating in the thread or a lurker picked up a tip or two that will be helpful to them. Maybe someone will actually decide to venture over here to see what we're doing. Ya never know. And you are right about her communication style. When you begin your posts with, "I don't mean to be snarky, BUT...." and then proceeds to be rude (on a semi regular basis), you surely aren't going to win any popularity contests.

What is amazing about our frugalsuz is (and she can correct me if I'm wrong) that until around 2008 she had hardly touched a coupon. I don't know if it was the Grocery Challenge that got her started or something else and she found us afterward, but I have NEVER seen anyone who decided to take something up and went with it 100% from Day One. Not only that, but as you all know, she's REALLY GOOD at it. I think she has coupon ink in her blood. Unfortunately, no matter how hard some people try, they just never really quite catch on to the more complicated coupon concepts. frugalsuz got it from the get go. It wasn't long after that that she discovered rebating. Since then, there's been no stoppin' the gal. I just wanted you to know that I have always been extremely impressed by your diligence and tenacity. Jeez dancinmama, you're making me blush today! I used to check out coupons.com sparingly and I'd get a paper every Sunday. I would cut out the coupons of interest to me at that moment and throw the rest away. I lurked for a long time on the MSN threads too. Everyone here was so friendly (and still is), but the thread was HUGE and it was hard to know where to jump in, what to say without sounding stupid, etc. Now I just don't care so much about sounding stupid! haha I think its a great thing that we separate out this thread each month. I'm so glad I did jump in though, it literally changed my life!

Mommy2two - check Kroger, Target & Walmart for the Ivory soap. I've read on a blog, that it's $1/pack at all these stores. I found mine at Kroger, cause CVS is sold out. Frugalsuz you rock by posting the deals! I had so much fun at RA today with the Revlon. Found lotsa nail clippers, so I did the deal in one go, cause I had a $10 UP to use. I'm gonna add these clippers to my boxes. I can see myself moving towards the 300 item mark now. I used $10 for Gillette razor, Oral B t/b, 8 Revlon items, and got back $23 UPs I found this blog, for anyone who's intersted in Walmart deals. I keep just keeping adding freebies to my list, so I can make one big trip to WM tomorrow. Let's hope they have everything I need, in stock. www.iheartthemart.com/ Momof2 recently told me about the foaming soap dispenser ($14.99) that you only need water & about 2 tsp liquid soap, to fill. Then I saw this again on homemadesimple. So I decided to buy the Dial foaming soap ($1.50 at Kroger) and will just refill it with water & 2 tsp soap, when its empty. What a great way to save on hand soap. I love, love, love the green Method soap, but don't wanna pay $3.99 for it. Now I'll look for a deal and/or use RRs/UPs & use it in my foaming dispenser.

You lucky . What a great opportunity to stockpile!! Have you already scoped out stock/prices so that you're good to go on Friday? Are you taking the day off? ha ha ha I've been going through all my inserts hunting for $1.50 and $2 coupons. Living Rich with Coupons has some match ups, but other than that, I'm going to hunt around in the store on Friday and see what I can find. I can't believe it - Pathmark is tripling $1 coupons again next week! This is just insane. Thanks for the info on Pathmark...I have let my sister know. (She shops at Pathmark in NY.)

Thanks for the suggestions for items on sale. I went to Target yesterday and did the diaper deal. It wasn't as good as what she had listed as my P&G had only $1.50 of diapers and $.50 off wipes, but I was able to get 2 large boxes of diapers, 2 large boxes of wipes, and 2 small things of wipes for less than $50. To put this in perspective, this is the equivalent of 16 things of wipes and 6-8 packages of diapers. For not having time to wait (the truck is leaving Friday night) I felt I did well. It also forced me to really get into the hallway closet where I keep most of my stockpile. I found so much I didn't realize I had. One item that was requested was feminine products (makes so much sense). I have tons of pads. I don't care for them but they keep giving away the Stayfree and I can't say no to free. I use them but prefer the other. Tucked away in the closet in about 7 boxes of "cotton ponies". Yeah for me, I am giving away all of my pads, about 8-10 packages. I also found a couple of toothbrushes (we use electric so I don't but regular), some dental floss picks, tons of the J&J Buddies (I kept a couple for the kids, but they prefer bodywash) and I picked up 8 free packages of Ivory soap at Krogers. I will definitely have to take a picture before I take the stuff on Thursday. I think all told, I spent no more than $75 on everything and most of that was on expensive baby stuff. A nd yes, I do have an ulterior motive. I now have room for more hounding. ;D LOL - I love your last line - that is so cute!

Oh my goodness, now A&P is doubling $2 coupons this weekend too! I'm going to be very, very busy! The only problem is that the prices in these two stores tend to be high, so I may not be able to get mountains of goodies. But I've got my fingers crossed! suzi - I'm not sure which stores are participating and which aren't. I think Pathmark usually puts their circular up on Thursday for the sale week starting Friday, so hopefully your friend can check the circular online and see if her store is doubling too. Here's some info on LRWC: www.livingrichwithcoupons.com/category/pathmarkThe double event is running this Friday, Saturday and Sunday only. They'll double up to 20 coupons total, no more than four of the same coupon. Next weekend, it looks like they'll be tripling $1 coupons again, but that might only be Saturday and Sunday. thanks, Frugalsuz, I'll let my friend know.

I buy store brand NSA tomato puree and add seasonings, veggies, etc to taste and whiz if a smooth texture is needed. I save a boatload of money because most name brand pasta sauces start at $3.50 or better. Plus I can adjust for pizza, mozzie sticks, or allergies. For instance, I make a separate batch if cooking for my mom wih no mushrooms or anchovies because she is allergic.
I can usually do these for a $1 a can and sometimes less.

I have felt welcome from the beginning. I started as a lurker on the MSN boards and then jumped in with my questions. I do remember the warm welcome that Dancin gave me and it was very much appreciated. I have always used coupons but not to this extreme......I just wish they had all these great deals on diapers back when I had twins in them!!

QUESTION FOR GALS WHO HAVE JOINED THE GROCERY CHALLENGE IN THE LAST YEAR OR WHO CAN REMEMBER:I just invited someone from the Smart Spending board to come join us. If it took you a while, please say so. I am always looking for ways to make newbies feel welcome and am wondering if there is something I/we need to change AFTER their initial welcome. TIA I felt comfortable right away, and am so thankful. I suffered a terrible injury last year, and my life since January of 2010 has consisted of Dr's, rehab and my support group. Couponing has been my way of re-entering the real world. Sometimes I screw up, because of my injuries. And sometimes I deal with a lot of tension. And I'm grateful that everyone here is not judgmental either about my posting a wrong deal or that I get nervous about wrong coupon usage.

Dancin, I hate to say this but I have been on and off here for a while but still don't feel like part of the hounds. But, I do have to remind myself sometimes. gin - I know exactly how you feel when folks don't respond to your comments. Its hard not to think - "hey, what about what I said? Doesn't anyone care?" I may get a couple or handful of comments to a particular post, but then I look at the blogger stats and see that hundreds of people have read the post and just not commented. No biggie, sometimes you don't have much to say and that's perfectly fine. Me three...or four... I've sometimes posted a scenario and was disappointed that no one took me up on it. But then I realized that was sort of silly, because it's not like I do every single one of everyone else's scenario's!

Like Murpath, I started out on MSN after reading Donna Freedman's Living On $12,000.00 and thriving. I lurked a long time before posting and couldn't understand why several people kept posting about getting free things at CVS. Later that summer, my sister and niece tried explaining why you save all your coupons. My famous question was, "Why would I save a coupon for something I didn't use?" After setting foot into CVS for the first time or two, I started getting the hang of couponing, and then I was sold. I remember filling a huge laundry basket with stuff my one son could use and gave it to him for Christmas. It had over $100.00 of free items in it and he was pretty impressed. My DH wasn't too impressed; actually he wasn't too happy with me stockpiling but then I caught him sneaking into my stockpile for some deodorant. After that, couponing was a fun hobby and when I started tallying my spending and savings, it was a wakeup call to how much I could save. I found the Grocery Challenge later and it became a place to post my good deals. Dancinmama said I was at the right place if I wanted to brag about my deals and she really made me feel welcome. This is one of the most unsnarkiest blogs and I've really learned a lot. I love hearing other people's great deals and their tips. Again, thanks to Dancin, I realize the benefits of a raincheck. I recently used a 2 year old raincheck at CVS. Anyways, the people are so nice and helpful here that I hope it's around for a very long time. BTW, when I first joined, I couldn't figure out what all the "barking" meant. Everyone seemed to be saying, "Woof, woof!"

It had over $100.00 of free items in it and he was pretty impressed. frugalsuz: I clicked into your blog as I always do on Wednesdays. Anyway, I could have sworn there was some great UPs deal on the Tylenol Precise at Rite Aid starting Sunday. I saw that you had it in your blog as being FREE after coupon, but didn't mention anything about the UPs. Is this ringing a bell at all?

Talk2Me2 Message #1 01/26/07 12:08 PMCommunity pick : WOW Over 4 years!!! "Suzi Q and I were talking and I think OP might get a kick out of this one. I was thinking it would be fun to post your current food budget and then how far you can shrink it. Give your strategies, your great deals. I was, at my most extravagant, paying $100-$200 per week to feed our family of four plus five kids that I look after Monday through Friday each week. I used to feed DH and myself on $25-30 per week back in the day, so I thought hmmmmm...wonder if I can pull off feeding everyone for $50 a week now? How low can I go? To be fair, I still have some food in my pantry, but this will help me to use it up instead of push it to the back and eventually throw it away. I'm going to try to do the $50 per week challenge, you may want to adjust the amount up or >eeek!< down according to how many you are feeding. As for us, my goal is to hit the $200 a month while not compromising health. I am planning on making lots of stuff from scratch and stocking up when I hit bargains. Anyone game?"
The post above was our very first post. It was a simple thread, a single question, a Grocery Challenge. Hence the name. It was Talk 2 Me 2 challenging me and others to "shrink" our food budget.
I have been "hooked" here ever since, and met a lot of people that found it a "game" of sorts to pay less for groceries and other household items.
Everyone has been fun, nice, and downright helpful. The newbies are fun to help. We all remember the "thrill" of that first order of food or toiletries that were free, or close to it.
