Smart thinking, stray. There have been many times in my cab when I had to do real weird things to protect myself from someone in my backseat. I am the ONLY cab driver I know that has not been robbed, beat up, had their cab stolen, a couple girls were raped. You have to be so vigilant out on the road going to places you have no idea what you are walking in to. I still say you are brave for delivering pizza at night. Out of the car?? Nope, unless I was WAY uptown I NEVER got out of my cab at night. Here- have another karma for being crazy brave walking in the ghetto at night and surviving.

But from what your describing, you have had a lot more close calls than I have. That sounds like a very rough neighborhood that you drive in. We hear about cab drivers occasionally getting robbed around here too, but nothing like what your describing - that sounds like a nightmare. At that complex that I was talking about, there was an incident where a girl was raped at knife point, and I remember hearing about a few Papa John's guys getting robbed there over the years, but for the most part, even late at night, nobody ever bothered me, and I am not a big guy. But, like I said, most of the Latins that I ran into there were nice to me. I remember one winter when I was working the day shift, a little Latina girl walked up to me and started speaking to me in Spanish. I do not understand Spanish, but I could tell by her hand movements that she was talking about how cold it was outside. I just smiled and nodded and continued walking to the apartment. In another store that I worked at we had a town that had a low income housing project - and even though this was also a small town, these projects had a very bad rep, a cop was shot and wounded there once. Anyway, if someone from there ordered late at night, the rule was, they had to meet us in the front where the administration building was - they also had some big spot lights surrounding it that stayed on all night. If they said no, then no delivery. The customers that I dealt with there were OK with it and I never had a problem. If you ever wanted to investigate the pizza delivery business, I would tell you to definitely NOT deliver in a neighborhood like you described in your post. My suggestion would be to find a store in a nice neighborhood (much better tips in a nice neighborhood too), but not your own - just because if you get a day where you get really busy and your by yourself - well sometimes when I was in this position - I sometimes forgot myself and would get frustrated and lets say maybe did not drive as carefully as I should have. Of course if you wanted to look into being a manager, then it wouldn't matter. And I'm not saying that you would forget yourself like I did, but it's just a suggestion.

Thx for the delivery advice, stray. NEVER drive a cab unless you have to. It's just too dangerous. Everything is on computer and GPS now, calls are dispatched by computer through GPS. You can control where you pick up your first call, but at some point you are going to drive someone to a really bad area, then when the meter goes off the comp starts firing these ghetto calls at you-- dozens of them because some areas drivers don't want to go because of the stats on risk. You can get stuck in a ghetto driving people with guns and going on drug runs for HOURS, and the only way out is to log off and drive across town to a safer location, which takes time and costs money, as well as making the company mad. They could care less if drivers get robbed or whatever, they just want to show at the end of their shift that every call got picked up-- which does not happen. It was much better for drivers when calls were voice dispatched and you could choose where you work, but since cab companies went all high tech drivers get in bad spots and they mess with our right as independent drivers to choose how we work. Lots of the old drivers have quit over this, and lots of new drivers cycle through week by week, totally clueless.. They don't last long, because they are so inexperienced they tend to wreck a lot, get robbed a lot and don't know how to make money, so they quit or get fired. Company does not care-- 3 training classes a week, butts in the seats, wheels running - that's all they care about. I really don't know how I survived it for almost 11 years. After computers went in it became a terrible job. And to think I am considering going back when I get whole again-- but to a small, non-computerized company, (2 of those will take me), so I can control my job better. Pizza maybe better, as you say can work a good area, but sure wrack up the miles on your personal vehicle and if you break down you are out of business and SOL--

I think that it's awful that some of the people who run those businesses have so little regard for human life. Well I hope that one of those two smaller companies hires you after your recovered. You certainly know the business in and out so I hope you can go back to making a good and safe living doing it. If I could go back to working a conventional job, I would go back to Domino's and deliver again. But your right, it does a number on your car. I destroyed my very first car, a '70 Buick Skylark doing it when I first started with them in '83. The best kinds of cars for pizza delivery are either the Corolla or the Civic, because they can both take a beating. Of course you can use something else like I and others did, but it will cost you more. I did break down once on the job, but because I had been there a while, I was OK. Of all the different jobs that I've had, I always did best at Domino's. As long as I was not in pain, I did not care about bad weather or long hours, I enjoyed being out on the road and making money.

That was what I loved about the cab, stray-- the freedom. Cabbing is awesome in that you get to where you can FEEL the city and the streets and the people. It's hard to describe. Plus I wore whatever, had no set hours, no vehicle to support, no boss-- lots of good things. You accept the bad with the good, and it gets under your skin and becomes part of you after a few years. Good talking with you here on your thread, stray. We street (worker) people have to stick together, huh??

You got it, tough. That is why I am a mean girl. 11 years in a cab did it. Survival. Nothing like military or anything, but we are often dealing with the same people the cops deal with but without a gun or cage separating us.

Yes, there is a risk. The only way to eliminate the risks of living is to stop living. There isn't a drug, procedure, surgery that hasn't killed or maimed someone. In 2001, I broke my left foot and tore a ligament and required surgery. In walks the nurse to finish prepping me, she put these compression hose on both legs and wrote "NO" in red sharpie on my right foot....to be sure they don't operate on the wrong foot. Real comforting to know as the nite-nite juice starts kicking in.

I BET, yank!! How many times do we hear these stories?? Just last week they removed the wrong kidney from a patient? pat-- best of luck to you. Take your drugs, do what you have to do to make life bearable. I know from a close friend on massive narcotics for in-operable pain that what you say is true.

They did the same to me when I had my hip replacement a couple months ago. The surgeon came in and wrote 'yes' on the correct hip.

I fell through a roof the other day and have since been on Percocet. Other than great pain relief, I felt nothing...no high, nothing. I want my money back! Seriously, I don't get the attraction to these drugs. Are they suppose to give you a high or something? Why do people not in pain even want them? Because if you are in pain, they mask it. If you're not in pain, you get high.

Swamp beat me to it. I was on oxycontin for about a week when I broke my pelvis and elbow, and was not high, just nauseated. But I hear those things kick butt if you are not in pain.

And stop falling through roofs!!! Bad for your health. I gave up roofs a couple of years ago, and now that I broke myself up on a ladder I'm thinking I am earthbound forevermore. ;D

The most commonly stolen thing in home burglaries around here is pain meds. If you get some and run your mouth about it, I can guarantee you'll find them gone next time you leave the house. You can't track pills, but they are profitable. Those morphine patches go for a lot of money too. They cut them up and "chew'" pieces like tobacco, or make "tea" out of them. The "tea" makes for some really f'ed up people.

Coedine goes for a high price on the streets too. DH's co-workers knew I had given birth and wanted to know if he'd sell them my coedine. Apparently you can combine it with cocaine and get some sort of "super high". I could have made some good money off those pills.

WOW. I have lots of customers on SSDI and can't COUNT the times I have had people tell me their neighbors/friends stole their meds. These people have to sleep with their pills, and some of them are hermits because of it, because it is near impossible to get a new script when your old one is just 4 days old. I had no idea. What a racket!!!! I GET it now.

It drives me crazy.

You, too, lone. Get well soon!!! I'm getting better slowly, can walk a few steps without my walker... LOL-- I have a new sympathy for old people now. I've always loved old folks, but I had no idea how hard life can be for them.

I can think of better solutions than sleeping with the pills & becoming a hermit.

Some people on SSDI are not mentally well, angel. Ladder, lone-- what.. are you high? LOL!!!!! Yeah, swamp-- I've had a few in my cab that I suspected were lying through their teeth about their meds being stolen. I don't understand why medicaid won't usually cover pain clinics with the nerve blocking stuff. It works for lots of people, but the ones I drive from pain clinics seem to have private insurance. Sure seems like a big gov't/ pharma thing to me. The shots are only every 6 months , not sure how cost measures up to pills... but what about people's health??? Narcos forever can be really dangerous. This is another concern I have about Obamacare.. will they go all meds rather than surgery, alternate treatments if it gets to the single payer Obama and others want just to save $$$$$$??
