I don’t want to stay in a house with 12 people - even if I like them all.

I don’t want to stay in a house with 12 people - even if I like them all. After ready what busymom said, I am sure my feelings on weddings, showers, etc. come straight from my mom and me having over 50 cousins on one side of the family and 30 on the other side. There is no way I could ever have made the trip to Iowa for that many weddings, etc. I was one of the few who left the state and it wasn't realistic. Mom got in trouble with Grandma right after she married my dad when Grandma told everyone buys Judy birthday and Christmas presents. Mom told her mom and dad would not be doing that because of all the nieces and nephews she already had and if they couldn't do it for both sides of the family, they couldn't do it. She said Grandma was not happy when there was no Christmas present from them for Judy. Mom's family drew names for the grandkids, so we gave one gift per person and got one gift in return. I honestly doubt if any of them could have afforded to buy that many gifts during those days.

Yup. I'm from a HUGE extended family. So is DH. In fact, having a family reunion is like having a wedding reception. Nothing like 100+ people showing up at your place. (We've never been able to host here, as our house & lot just isn't big enough. Plus, I can think of a neighbor or two who might call the cops with that many people, even if we weren't serving alcohol, LOL!)

We're talking 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th cousins of DH's that he has never met. We were expected by her to contribute money to each and every one. Boy was she pissed when DH and I put our foot down on that. One year alone if we had sent "only $10" for each cousin's kid it would have been over a grand. For people we don't even know!

The generation that is of marrying age now doesn't send any kind of invitations to events because most of us have never met them.
I think there were 75 people in our 950 sq ft house for my high school graduation and college graduation parties. Not a lot of gifts, but they showed up.

Two updates:
#1 My daughter's husband's grandmother is glad to have the baby shower date set. She will be flying in from NJ. She specifically asked DD how much it would be for her to stay at the AirBNB. DD let her know that we hadn't reserved one yet as we were still considering options.
I honestly cannot remember if I mentioned this before, but my daughter's MIL and SIL are excited to have the date set. SIL is flying in from Hawaii. MIL has blocked out her work calendar for the Friday of the baby shower weekend. MIL will drive about 4 to 4.5 hours based on the two AirBNBs I'm considering.
#2 I've now found a super cute house with 3 bedrooms and can sleep 8 and will only cost $1300 for the two nights. Yes, I have permission from the owner to have a 8 people overnight and a lunch time baby shower of no more than 25 people.
