bizarre hoarding behavior. seriously. hoarding food? i get that. buying sacks of beans and rice. yes. i can see that. that will help you survive if there was a SERIOUS supply disruption. hoarding TP? what the actual hell? somewhere between bizarre and embarrassing. not worried about eating. worried about wiping your ass. i just did NOT understand that. at all. still don't. but whatever rocks your cradle, i guess. I was living in Florida when the hoarding of TP was happening. It was incredible! I don't know if other parts of the country had the same supply problems as our community did, but it reached the point where I had cashiers telling me, if the store was out of TP, which store they heard might still have some in stock. And it wasn't just TP that was in short supply. People were hoarding anything they thought they couldn't live without. I've mentioned here before that I was in college when "just in time" inventory was gaining popularity. And I studied about it, as well as other inventory systems. Yes, it does mean companies keep their costs down, by not needing such big warehouses, etc., but even back then I could see the potential for problems. This is NOT a perfect world. It only takes one storm, one company shutdown, and that inventory system is trash.

i can't contain myself. i just gotta say this. when i was traveling to Pacific Mexico a year ago, there was a couple in the pharmacy buying Ivermectin. i am basically 100% sure they were doing it as an investment because of the QUANTITY they were buying. it was about the size of a shoebox. it was in the KILO range. it was far more than they could use personally. i am SURE they were bringing it back to the US to sell. people like that are disgusting to me. i mean that without reservation. i find disaster capitalism (that is you, WCPS) disgusting in general. but doing it for fake medication like this is beyond disgusting. it makes me want to move to another country. seriously. it is INTOLERABLE. Turkey?😎

I think we all added to the toilet roll problem. Instead of buying a pack we brought 3 because we didn't know when it would be in stock again. When my kids came in saying they couldn't get TP anywhere ......... I was able to say "its fine just get some out of the cupboard" This is how these things start, it was Tulip Mania without the supply problem. i found the whole thing astonishing. the only way i could get my head around it by consoling myself with the fact that at least the hoarding item was not perishable. it makes SOME sense to hoard things that you know you will need in the future, and don't spoil. there is a guy that lives in the middle of the Snake River wilderness area. his cabin is on the river. there is no road, and six months out of the year, nobody rafts that river. so he gets six months of supply just before fall comes around. that is the kind of hoarding that makes sense. but Americans had no reason to live like refugees. Back in the 70’s, when I resembled Tom, my GF could have been the subject of this song. That’s what incest can do to a lovely person. My fave Petty song because of all that.

If the unverified rumor of a shortage of tp to manage one the most basic human biological functions is true, then what other of life's daily items will we run out of which will make life more unreal. That frightens some people. We are creatures of habit. that is why i brought up the sacks of beans. but TP is not actually necessary. in Turkiye, you almost never see it in public toilets. i won't describe how they get by, but they do. one might think that Americans are more resourceful than Turks. but i guess not? astonishing how spoiled we all are. and, again, embarrassing.

Now for a "lighter" note of how I became an "Accidental TP Hoarder". First the set up: I live by myself and have always had this rather irrational fear of getting diarrhea and running out of TP and being too sick to get new TP. So for as long as I can remember I have always had ~3 packs of TP in the house -a full one and an opened one in each of my two bathrooms. So when we were all send home to quarantine I went for some food but the empty paper goods shelves didn't bother me at all. Then late June I decided to pick up a pack because I could see that come winter there could be shortages again. Now you may remember that at the time they only sold those huge packs. I put it in storage but forgot I bought it and did the same a month later. I said some unlady like things when I realized what I had done but TP doesn't spoil so no real harm. But sooooo much TP... Now my sons have a bit of a warped sense of humor. So come Christmas when we exchanged gifts using Zoom for opening there was this humongous box DS1 had delivered to my home. You guessed it: he (living in S'pore) found this whole TP shortage hilarious and he had ordered this as a gag-gift. Thus the Accidental TP Hoarder was born I gave some of it away to friends who could not find any when they needed it. Or they needed it but were sick so they couldn't go to the store. And here I am. Almost four years after that fateful start of this whole thing and I checked my supplies. In a few months I will need to put TP on the "buy when on sale" list to maintain my pre-Covid reserves.

Ok, ok…Türkiye.😎 yeah. probably not my first choice. having said that, the cost of living 38% that of the US, including a staggering 17% cost of HOUSING. picture yourself in a coastal village, with a sea view, in a six bedroom, four bath two story Mediterranean style house that cost you $400k. kinda makes you not worry much about their version of Trump as much. especially with a Yacht sitting down in the harbor and a 15 minute boat ride to Greece.

No toilet paper and I don't remember what I did about that. ETA: It was called a squat toilet. In old Roman days.... The sticks on the left are called axylospongium or sponge on a stick to wipe your ass. The little aqueducts you see in the picture carried fresh water which you dipped your axylospongium in to clean it after use. Fresh for the next shitter to use! There were also small aqueducts under the seats which carried the waste away to god knows where.

i have seen worse than this, for the record. in parts of Asia. at least the squats have running water.
but this is more of a distraction than anything else. my point is that you can get by without TP. if you are going to hoard....find something that will save your life.

I lived for a decade in SE Asia. I get nervous when my 5lb (single remember) bag of rice is below half full. And, unless an EQ interrups the supply I am not without water.

It's been a while but I love that area - it has been a retirement destination in the past for the British. This was when I was still young but as a result English is widely spoken and healthcare is quite good. If it were not for wanting to live close to family this is where I would move to. As is, rather cold and expensive Munich it will be for me.
Good thing: cheap flights to anywhere in Europe are aplenty and Portugal is not far off. Nor is Malaga (another place I once thought I might retire to) - a short term rental there sounds really good as well

I was chatting with a friend yesterday and they think WW3 is likely. Their logic is "I'm just guessing. But Europe is arming itself now for some reason. Yemen is saying it will block to other shipping lanes besides the Red Sea/ suez. China wants Taiwan back. Taiwan makes our computer chips and Chinese can't do that bc they don't have the knowledge even if they have the factories. Israel is committing genocide now and has nukes. China has a demographic nightmare happening no matter what and will decline. Everything is a mess and a weak president or a president that wants war is just a recipe for disaster" What do you think? taiwan semiconductor is building factories outside of taiwan and planning to make sure their tech doesn't fall into china's hands. everything else - who knows?

I can't even find the words to say how stupid that is. You are part of the problem that creates shortages. As long as you get your 6 month supply, to hell with everyone who just buys what they need. Of course the manufactures can't keep up with that artificial demand. 10,000 rounds of ammunition is insane. Maybe it is insane to you in my world it is a lil bit of overall stock. Then 10k rounds for a handgun maybe our overall stock pile is north of 250k rounds. Before you think that is alot I know several people are over in the millions of rounds. When we go out shooting it is nothing to let go of 3-5000 rounds in a weekend

that has got to be an expensive hobby. there is no way those rounds cost less than $100. that is more money than chain smokers spend in a week.

People in my world of exhibition and competitive shooting spends ungodly amounts of money. It is hard for someone who is not into it to think how much is spent on it let along how many are into it.
