I'm old enough to have lived through the Beanie Babies craze back in the late 70's. We had a neighbor who could barely afford toilet paper but invested heavily in Beanie Babies . I guess Stanley Cups will be the next big thing and, like Depression glass, will be impossible to get rid of when today's young people become old farts in 60 or 70 years. Future YM'ers will be moaning about have to clear Stanley cups out of Grandma's basement.

Stanley thermoses have been around forever. Plenty of workers have been hauling them to the job sites and out on the tractors with them for several generations now. Not sure whats with the current craze. Probably some influencer started pushing them on Tik Tok or something stupid.

they hired some executive that worked at Yeti (I think?) to overhaul their marketing, and that's when stuff went nuts. I'm trying to find the article I read last week, but not having much luck. I'll update this post when (if?) I find it.
FWIW, my dad still uses his dad's old mug. I don't even want to know how old that thing is.

Someone very smart saw an untapped market for Stanley and the company very smartly tapped into the 'ladies who drink too much water' niche market. Good on them. I have a 20 oz Contigo water bottle that fits my needs (and my car) but the 40 oz Stanley I got from work last month is going to make a great beach drink vessel.
We have an old Stanley thermos that is perfect for winter tailgates. I like to heat up apple cider and drink that when I need something warm with my parking lot drinks.

I have one (maybe 2) of them. My daughters each have several. They apparently are the thing, right now. They work pretty well. But I have a stainless steel cup, that personally, I like as well, or better. Because I like the size and the way it fits in my hand and against my mouth better. But the paint, or whatever it is, on the outside of the Stanley, might be better. I'm using a Stanley cup, right now. 😁

I had no idea about the current craze until I drove by Target one day and there were lines out the door. Apparently release day of a new pink Stanley/Starbucks item? Surprised me because I always associated Stanley products as totally utilitarian and ugly as sin. Somewhere around here I think I still have an old green Stanley thermos that my dad got from his dad. Ugly and heavy enough to be a lethal weapon, but still does its job even decades later

That’s exactly it, some influencers started promoting them and suddenly all the people who pay attention to influencers wanted them. I’m old and cynical. I don’t know where to find an influencer, but if I did, I wouldn’t watch her, let alone decide how to spend my money based on what she said. Clearly, I’m in the minority. Stanley sure hit the cash cow though, didn’t they? Good on them.

Stanley Cup means a hockey trophy, not a water tumbler.

My friend has a thermos brand cup that keeps coffee hot for 2 days. He has to add an ice cube to get the coffee to drinking temperature. My Contigo is supposed to keep beverages cold or hot for 6 or so hours. IDK the ounces. It does have a lock on the mouth area to stop leaks. I use it only for cold now that I a quit drinking coffee as it didn't agree with me. I know exactly what you mean when you say the cup fits your hand and mouth.

I hadn't heard of this at all, but today I received several spam emails at my office about Stanley cups and how to claim mine. Then I saw something on Facebook about how someone stole 65 of them which were worth several thousand dollars total.

Thank heaven they don't have glass liners anymore as much as they get kicked around.

Close, it was Crocs. linkAnd yes, another TikTok made me buy it: You might compare the Stanley cup craze to catching on like wildfire.
But what about a real fire?
Well, for one Stanley owner, TikTok user @daniellemarielettering, her cup set off a viral blaze.
On Nov. 15, 2023, she posted a TikTok after her car caught on fire.
In the video, she returns to look at the damage to her vehicle and finds her cup not only survived the fire, but also still had ice in it.
As of Jan. 19, the video had 95 million views and more than 9.1 million likes.

They use scarcity marketing as they release limited color by limited color. No thanks. I have all of the drinking cups that I need.

Stanley Cup means a hockey trophy, not a water tumbler. I didn't open the linked article in the op. But based what I was reading here I thought to myself who would collect 67 cheap copies of hockey's Stanley Cup? I just now saw a news piece on TV about the 67 Stanley (drinking) cups and it all finally made sense.

I mean, if my car caught on fire and my icy beverage survived I'd be sharing the hell out of that! But I have a small social media presence so my friends would just crack jokes or something.

Gwen has two. She got one for her birthday then I let her go after the pink one that was exclusive for Black Friday as an early Christmas present. It's the new Beanie Baby or Tickle Me Elmo or Cabbage Patch doll. Take your pick. I remember when a truck tipped over on the interstate full of the McD's mini Beanie Babies. Good lord that was insane. Beating someone up in a Target seems tame compared to that. I don't mind. As someone whose parents never gave into trends to make a point it sucked to feel left out, especially when it was a freaking $10 Tamagotchi . Yes I will bring that up on his death bed. So within reason I'll let the girls have their fun. No I am not going to stand in line for hours and beat someone up for a red Target Stanely Cup. She definitely isn't going to have $3k worth of them like the one article I read. But let her have the Black Friday excitement of trying to snag one online? Sure as long as she understood it counted as a Christmas present. Which she did and she uses it every day. She also owns a few Lululemon clothes. Some of it was purchased with birthday/Christmas money. Some it by me. It's understood she will not have an entire wardrobe of the stuff unless she can figure out how to thrift it and that I expect her to take care of it. Which she does.

I bought DD1 a cup for Christmas. Kid doesn't ask for much. Like, she asked for about $30 of things (a few books and an exercise ball) outside of the cup for Christmas from us.
It sucks to not have something that allows you to fit in, or say, clearly sport the knock-off version, and then pretend that it is just as good as the real thing.
DS got a cell phone because he wanted to fit in. I wouldn't make that choice now, because I think social media has really ramped up. Nearly a decade ago, it was facebook or insta, and that was it.

I remember going to a Black Friday sale at 4AM, for Tomagotchis I had never heard of them, so didn't know what I was looking for really. The crowd pushed in past the employees of the store, who opened the door. No concern for anyone else. They all went to the first display they saw, thinking it was them. It wasn't. I walked past the frenzy, to another display, further inside the store. No one was there, so I had a chance to check the Tomagotchis out and pick what I wanted, first. Then people realized, they were at the wrong display and came rushing toward me. So glad, I had those first few minutes, without masses of people grabbing at me and my stuff, so I could make a decision about my purchase, in relative peace. Those were insane sales!

I thought I was doing too much, spending at least $20 for my Camelbak cups, that I’ve ever only bought on sale.
I saw the video at Target when there was a rush for the Valentine Day cups, but I didn’t know why people were acting a fool to buy them.
I was much more up to date about things when my children were younger lol.

There is no shortage of cups in my house. For that reason DH would pitch a fit if I came home with a bunch of Stanley's. I have many lovely themed stainless cups mainly 20-30 oz ones.
I've got a handful of Ozark Trail ones from Walmart for my iced coffee and summer beverages by the pool/beach.
And several collegiate themed ones from Sam's. Those were Simple Modern.
So I'm not opposed to cups just not buying a bunch of those ones. If I did want one I'd pick one of the colors available online and move on.

We are a hydroflask family. If my kids want to change that up they can sponsor it themselves. I have already spent all the money. I also have 3 metal bottles that are thin at the top - which sucks because you can’t get ice into them very easily. I’m not getting a Stanley.

Stanley the brand is owned by I think PMI which is based in Seattle. However, the actual Stanley cups are manufactured in China. So both PMI and these Chinese factories are making big money right now.

I would have been more inclined to buy one if they were still manufactured here. They have not been since PMI took them over.
