I asked this the other day, but I didn't get a response, so I'll ask again... Has anyone here ever bought a mattress on Amazon? Our mattress was ordered online, but not from Amazon. It is AMAZING, and it was expensive. As I've said, DS1 will be taking his futon mattress to his new house. We replaced the bed base. There's no rush, but we'll need to replace the mattress too at some point. I don't want to spend a lot, because that room is the guest room. I want a decent mattress, but it doesn't need to sing and dance LOL. We all prefer a firm mattress. Any suggested brands? (Not stores, because we don't have the same stores here.) Thanks! :-) Oh, I read it as you'd already ordered the mattress, so I didn't answer. I've now purchased three mattress from Costco via online and they're all excellent.

Just make sure if you get a foam mattress that you get a mattress pad/extra cover.snapdragon I was sort of hoping to avoid that. I figure if I have to pay extra for that, I may as well buy a better/firmer/more expensive mattress. Knee Deep in Water Chloe Costco is an excellent idea! Unfortunately the closest one is 50 min away. DH's good friend (from Texas) is a member. Sometimes he invites DH to go there with him. Thank you both! ETA: Knee Deep in Water Chloe I will see if they can be ordered from Costco online here too... I'm sure DH's friend would be happy to order one for us.

I need to change and get ready to mow the lawn in about later this afternoon.
I will be able to shower and pick at things in the bedroom afterwords.
I need to vacuum
I need to do some more weeding
I need to strip the bed and remake it.
I have done nothing but pay a bill and check finances today.
Tomorrow is coffee and chatter with others. After that I am thinking about Costco but I am not sure if I want to go for a drive on a Friday and attempt to come back. So probably next week instead.
The play is coming up on Sunday and I am excited to go watch it.

I've been very unproductive today so tomorrow is changing the AC filters, cleaning the toilets, and hitting up a grocery and a store to frame something we bought. Saturday is floor mopping again

Picked up garbage that the bears took off into the trees by me.
I seriously need a shower than I can think about doing other things on my list.

contacted the client about the check not arriving. The invoice got lost and they hadn't done anything about payment. Contact said they would process as quick as they can but not sure how long that might be.
In any case....won't be here for the student loan payment on the 5th....so need to figure something out....borrowing more money.....Some lessons learned for sure, lol! But - it hurts!!
Also make dentist appt.
There are my two tasks for today!

Since early November, I have been home for two weeks in December, two weeks in April, and am about to start two weeks in May. I leave again on May 15. In that time I have had the kitchen remodeled and the flooring in 90% of the house removed and replaced. With the kitchen remodel I packed up everything in the cupboards in December and unpacked it all to place it in the new cabinets in April. Also in April I got everything but the heavy furniture off the floors. All the stuff got moved from room to room and closet to closet as the work progressed. I came back last night to completed floors, and I'm now in the process of moving stuff back to its proper place. Last night I had to make up the bed because I'd stripped it before I left to make it easier for the flooring crew to move. After traveling for much of the day, it was a tiring day. This morning I got started vacuuming the floors and then Swiffering them to get up all the little construction "crumbs" and "dust." My office is now pretty much reorganized. I also fixed up the living room. Which brings me to the two spare bedrooms. I have lots of sheets and mattress pads and quilted coverlets. Even for full or queen beds I tended to buy king size quilts and comforters because I like them to go lower on the bed sides. I had a king size bed once. I replaced it with a queen. I have two twin beds which I push together when DS and DDIL visit. I need twin sheets for when they are separate, and king sheets for when they are pushed together. I have three sets of white cotton sheets for my queen, along with two other sets - microfiber and flannel. I have mattress pads for each bed contingency. Bottom line, I have WAY too many bed linens. The thought of going through it all and deciding what to keep and what to give away has me in full procrastination mode. I guess I don't need to think much about it until everything else is moved back into place. debthaven , my son has bought TWO king size mattresses from Amazon over the years. He has been very happy with the comfort and quality. He and his wife are not small people, so if they're comfortable it's a good endorsement as far as I'm concerned. I've slept on both of them. I'm going to order one for my second spare bedroom. I just texted him and asked him to check his Amazon order history to give me the name of the mattress. On the other beds I have a traditional mattress and box spring, Sealy brand, and I topped them with foam toppers from Costco. SO COMFORTABLE! ETA: DS's bed is www.amazon.com/Vibe-12-Inch-Memory-Mattress-Queen/dp/B074NDQ143/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=3A676TTY8UTCH&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.4B9eP-iPdgCjNUsfweL1sBCA4fak8yP0Fq2UxRoVCO2k0bFgYoHzGUCjwi7lOC0OzsoTUbiydGuo2qmgK5DynO2MIZKWgsqxHZQ6vA4oWI-iCzgAbUZSlvOmbgNLArd5_4vbpTm6d-wOQao6hp0tG_Ut8X1PDWP7j7-tuTmwv6O6we43u6VqYzYj9VRYDq-QkAyIGU5ieidNlpMsGA4o6ITyrasqwPqfRbL2SdC2mzDlA14ErfSlbqiBZXw85EzkNWfejs9xO0ouzj4cPSVHNbe7eNohlxHsX6jhDzdBKFQ.UAF0qMKUaYLF5BUOwYCsShEU3goQoDnmNSeosOr6rd8&dib_tag=se&keywords=vibe%2Bgel%2Bmemory%2Bfoam%2B12-inch%2Bmattress%2Bqueen&qid=1714748565&sprefix=vibe%2Bgel%2Caps%2C310&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&th=1About Informed Delivery, a friend of mine has it. I sent a large check to her for my part of a long vacation we took. She told me that it was in Informed Delivery one day last fall. It was not delivered. In fact, it was NEVER seen again. I recognize that nothing is 100%, but this has been enough to keep me from signing up for it. About books, I'm Kindle all the way. I usually download library books onto it, but will buy random books here and there. I like reading in bed without a lamp or overhead light, and the Kindle Paperwhite lets me do that. Ditto on being able to adjust the font size for reading comfort.

I have had mail not show up that was in Informed Delivery. The scans are taken at a distribution center, not locally. In this instance, it was a check for my NIL. The postmaster had returned it because we don't have anyone in town with a Russian name. She took no responsibility for all of the other mail that has come here for my NIL. I also told her she is not Russian. So it was left to NIL to get the check dealt with. It did get returned to the company and it did get mailed in another envelope to here and they did deliver it. That was about 6 weeks later. That had nothing to do with Informed Delivery. That had to do with incompetence in my racist town. I bought my current mattress online. I don't remember where, but it's very comfortable.

anciana we may well just bite the bullet and pay more at a physical store where we can try them out. As you say, the reviews are very subjective. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it! I feel like mpl may have. Can't tag her on my phone.

I think it's been about two years with biweekly housecleaner. She started off at $120 for 4 hours and raised to $140 in Jan which is still underpriced for the area. The last 3-4 months her younger male cleaning partner has gone downhill. He also spends too much time on his phone and sometimes they bicker when they're here and it's awkward. I tried to address the poor job with her and it was better only the very next time. DH has been pushing to change services but hasn't helped find one and I hate confrontation.
Saw a fb post raving about a cleaner with easy contact info posted and offers for free on-site estimate which is key bc my house is 2400 square feet but I don't have girls rooms and a couple other spaces cleaned.
Lady came today and we hit it off. Cleaner was just here yesterday and new gal was like yes she missed here, here and here which were all things that were bugging me. She wants $175 flat fee which feels like a big raise but i know its much more the going rate. An extra $50 for the first two times to deep clean and bring up to her standard. DH didn't even flinch when I checked with him. She starts next week.
I think I'm gonna fib a bit and tell old one that we're cutting budget bc of bonus teen. Gives me an easy way out and hurts her feeling less bc I do like her and she's been so good for my sanity.
Can I get by with a text or do I need to call?

The last mattresses I bought were all for this house and all from Costco. It went very well. We're happy with the purchases on which we had to rely on descriptions. Good luck, debthaven.

azucena, I think a text would be fine but I also think you'd be doing her a favor by letting her know that her service level has changed and not in a good way lately. She's trying to run a business and would want to know, I'd think.

Got the kitchen drawer pull replaced and scrubbed the cabinets then the floor while I was at it. Then I also consolidated 3 bins of supplies into 2 for the arts and crafts show. Today I just need to go through the pictures to bring with us, and clean the bathroom before I pack the car. Leaving tomorrow a.m. just after 6:00.

Before things went south, I gave her glowing references about twice a month so did my part to build her business. I'm gonna give me and my anxiety grace and text. I need to rally and call Trifling Nut about bonus teen's medical needs tomorrow so my energy is better spent there.

I may have shared this before, but...
The last time I had a house cleaner, the guy did a reasonably good surface clean. I had four bathrooms, so he did two bathrooms one week, and two bathrooms upstairs the next week. One day I was in a downstairs bathroom and I looked where the walk-in shower door met the shower floor and there was all this crusty scum there. I left him a note for him to take care of it. He wrote at the bottom of the note: that bathroom is next week. He should have been embarrassed that he'd let it go for so long and cleaned it immediately. It was a shower we didn't really use much so I hadn't immediately noticed the build-up.
What did it for me was when I reminded him that he needed to move the ottoman to vacuum the Persian carpet underneath it, otherwise moths can dwell in the darkness and eat away at the wool. He insisted he always moved the ottoman to vacuum, but after every cleaning I noticed the ottoman in exactly the same place (there was a pattern in the rug so I could judge it pretty well). One week I put a small scrap of paper underneath the ottoman. It was still there after he supposedly vacuumed under the ottoman. After that I was done with him.
Everyone says you have to put up with this sort of thing when you have cleaners, but to try to put up with it and find someone who doesn't steal. I think you should get what you pay for. The resident lives there and has a chance to see what could be done better, far more than a once-a-week visitor does, even if that visitor is a cleaner. If the resident points out an area that is not getting consistently cleaned, the cleaner should make a point to hit those spots. Every time.

My brain is fried after doing 8h of interviews online. Job 2 cancelled a half-day next week, and frankly I'm thrilled!!! azucena I'd probably do the text too ... it just makes life easier to write it, send it and done. Thank you for the mattress recommendation seriousthistime ! I will see if they carry that brand here. We have a lot of beds! There's our (queen) bed, DS2's (between a double and a Queen), DS3's (between a double and a Queen), DS1's room/the guest room (between a double and a Queen), and DD's room (a trundle bed, so two twins). For the sheets ... I have two sets per bed. I don't like waiting till the bedding is washed before putting on clean bedding, I like to make up the bed as soon as I strip it. I also prefer bigger comforters, but the one we have now in the guest room is down. I don't want to pay to replace it with a bigger one. If DS1 asks for it, I'd probably give it to him, but we'd replace it with a bigger synthetic one from Ikea. Good bedding is expensive!!! PS Typing all that out made me realize I should probably get a European mattress. Those beds are 140 cm wide, and apparently the closest US mattresses are 135cm or 152 cm wide ... Thanks again for all your help!

I may do have a problem on my hands!
Not only do I still need to reduce my books by at least half (and that is after getting rid of stacks and stacks of them) but I have a similar problem with CDs. Now in my defense, feeble as it may be, I have always had three CD collections, one at home, one at work, and one in the car, and they are all somewhat different. I mean you can't really go on a road trip without Willy Nelson singing on the road again or singing (at the top of your lungs) along with Janis Joplin's version of Me and Bobby McGee, Blues for a quiet night at home, or Gary Moore or the Scorpions at work, can you now? Those are different environments and there is so much more wonderful music. And now I have to get those collections down - once I am ready to face the music going out the door that is...
I have put 15 CDs in my latest Goodwill box. And my guestroom is almost ready to see guests again. Not quite but very close. My new flooring decluttering exercise is coming to an end and not a moment too soon.
Next up, my pantry. This week a fairly new (~one month old) can decided to split at the seams and leak all over the place. I cleaned it up but I also realized it had been a while since I last checked everything. That is the big drawback of buying food you never hope to eat - my earthquake stash- bought solely based on ease to open and, if needed, eat cold straight from the can. I just tend to ignore my stash but it is time to go through and give away/donate everything that is getting close to its "best by" date and get new food in place. Kind of an expensive habit but I like to eat and I don't think that will go away when the earth decides to rock and roll...

In further perils in the Rukhland....
Have put myself under austerity measures! Today is day 2 of beans on toast for breakfast! My gf bread is pretty pricy, not sure what I will do w hen that runs out! Beans were just boiled pinto beans. I had invested in a 25 pound bag of dried pintos, so will be eating those alot in the coming weeks!
I've already invested a bit of money in a productive summer garden, so I really really need that to pay off this year! I usually have about 50% success and enjoy the process, but going to try harder to be as productive as possible this year! Productive as in produce!
this a.m. during a break from work - I transplanted the ground cherries, the last tomatillo, and a few tomatoes. Over the weekend will try to get everything transplanted and put zucchini and melon seeds in somewhere.....Using much more of the ground for food than ever before so some of the soil isn't as carefully nutured as others but I'll do some research on what may go in there. I had planned on dropping some more money into the yard with plant supports, bagged soil and amendments, but I'm going to have to just use what I have. I do have about 6 comfrey plants, so will get plenty of nutrients there and luckily I did more composting over the winter than I have in the past couple years more out of concern for food waste in landfills than not, but thankfully that is going to pay off and I have very well rotted fall leaves from last year as mulch/compost as I blended up all the veg scraps in the vitamix and poured onto the fall leaves, so they are ready to feed the food to feed me! I also luckily planted the tomatoes, most peppers and eggplant, pretty early so those a little more advanced than usual at this time. Hoping it all comes to fruition!
some cleaning too for sure!

Rukh O'Rorke you earn a great salary, and it makes me sad to see you so stressed out about money. I hope that the Rukh Inc check comes in, and that the garden takes off! NastyWoman when I moved from the US in the early 80s, there was such a thing as "book rate" ... it was very cheap to ship books at that rate, by boat. I don't know if that still exists or not, or if CDs would be covered in that rate. If not, it's OK if it costs to move the things you love and use and want to keep.

The media rate is very much available in the U.S. It does apply to all media--books, CDs, DVDs, anything without ads.
ETA It's cheap, too.

It is not the cost of moving things I love. It is the knowledge that apartments in Munich are very unlikely to be anywhere close to the 1300sqf I currently have. I will have to pare my possessions down like it or not. Some things are easy like my dinner service. That is not going to move -> I've been wanting a new set for a couple of decades now. I don't even dislike it but I am so tired of it. I break very, very little for some reason and so I have this set with one plate with a tiny chip - but I have had and used it for about 50 years! I bought it piece by piece when I was barely out of college. Things with true sentimental value, like a large and very impractical basket, my mom gave me will make the move. No way am I leaving that behind. I have money set aside for this (very) expensive move but space will be the defining factor. C'est la vie...

Time to fess up about the scale of my book problem: I have 4 6-ft high bookcases filled to the brim and another 6 that have just 4 shelves each. These are much sturdier and the books are double layers on each shelf. Then there are a couple of shelves in my craft closet that have craft books/magazines. And this is after getting rid of box after box, after box, of books. And I regret buying none of them. Linus of the Peanuts may have his security blanket, I have my security books and, it turns out, CDs.

Had a great coffee and chatter session in the neighborhood! I even got the sheet with neighbor's information for questions or emergencies.
I managed to weed for about 40 minutes but came in due to rain arriving early.
My next plan is to put together a 4 piece patio set. --- I got the box open without tearing it. Hoping my energy comes back in a while. The top is just open in the living/kitchen/dining/entry area right now.
Managed to do the bed and a few extra loads of laundry last night. I did another load this morning. -- I need to put it away.

It's so nice that you're getting to know your new neighbors snapdragon ! We have very little planned for this weekend, just dinner out with friends tomorrow night, in a nearby suburb. And keeping up with kitchen and laundry.

I noticed my roof was leaking when I went to bed last night. I totally panicked and thought it was time for a new roof. Niece's husband stopped by a bit ago. I do not need a new roof. Remember the carbon monoxide problem I had last winter? Well, in breaking up the ice, the seal was broken on the vent pipe. All it needs is caulked. NIL did a roof inspection and said that is all that needs done. I did not like the way he responded to me last night and had been thinking bad things about him. Bad me. He initiated coming by tonight and he will be here tomorrow when he gets off work around noon to fix it. NO NEW ROOF! Not now. Sometimes family is good. Will figure out the ceiling in my bedroom later, as in the fall or winter. The drywall is going to need to be replaced, so it will be another problem of no one wanting to do a small job.

I will probably be remodeling more of the hallway bathroom than I anticipated. After the new toilet I was hoping to also replace the tub. I found out today that the plumber has recently added employees who will do some carpentry work and tiling. He said people were having so many issues finding someone to do the small jobs so they added them to their business. I'm thrilled, now to pare down my tile choices to the affordable ones and not the beautiful all stone ones that are hugely expensive. The pond is still with me. The first people totally ghosted me, no message, no nothing, just didn't show and didn't respond to my messages. The second person can't do it this weekend she is working 12 hour shifts Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Person #3 said they would be by either tonight or tomorrow, she would let me know, so far haven't heard anything. I have person #4 lined up and waiting, although she may flake, she didn't realize where I live. If we reach Sunday night with no response and it is still here than person #2 said she would come on Monday. The thing is they have to dismantle this, move rock and dig out the livestock trough that is functioning as the pool part of the fountain/pond. Anyone who was aggressive or asked stupid questions is being skipped on the list. We are supposed to have rain this weekend so I got the lawn mowed this afternoon after work.

Rukh O'Rorke you earn a great salary, and it makes me sad to see you so stressed out about money. I hope that the Rukh Inc check comes in, and that the garden takes off! thanks! I am puzzled about it all for sure! I am still maxing retirement but will wait to see what raise I get before scaling back. I think it is inavoidable to cut back, but I'll see. With the inflation and higher taxes, it sure doesn't go as far as you think it is going to go.
