What genres do you listen to the most? What are your favorite songs? Favorite artists? Do you listen to a certain type of music according to your mood? For me…… I mostly listen to hip hop, R&B and NeoSoul. But I am interested in and will listen to music from other genres, except only certain types of jazz, and classical music tends to make me want to go to sleep. I have a LOT of “favorite” songs. If I need to narrow it down to just a few, to keep up with the spirit of this thread, I will try. I also have a lot of favorite artists. I will try to narrow that down too, if necessary. That is difficult for me because my favorite artists are my favorites for different reasons. But I will say that I have often referred to Maxwell as my next ex-husband. I do listen to different types of music according to my mood…… and the mood I need to be in, (instead? lol) at any given time. My playlists have “themes”. I am not an artist, I can’t sing (even though I really wish I could), and can barely dance, but I LOVE music. And I am also curious. So, I would love to hear from you, even if you don’t “love” music.

I listen to music all day. I think it's better for me than having the television on as my background noise.
I start the day listening to Phlash Phelps on 60's gold on Sirius.
Then I switch to David Crosby on Apple Music.
I'm also listening to a lot of Christmas music on both Sirius and Apple.
Aside from Let It Be and In My Life by the Beatles, my favorite song changes regularly.
I have little interest in music from the 2000's forward.

So I listened to “The Weight”, featuring Ringo Star and somebody else. I liked it, and added it to one of my playlists. I will listen to the other song when I get a chance.

I notice that music can have a big impact on my mood.
I've weirdly followed some of DD15s musical theater likes. Mean girls gets a lot of play during work. I particularly love the irony of singing Stupid with Love which has lyrics about math. The songs from Six are catchy and upbeat for work too.
90s ballads and hits from my teen years can help pick up my mood. Have rediscovered Pink and just love her musical genius.
Pink - you might try Casting Crowns if you're at all into christian music. Praise you in the storm came out during one of DHs toughest surgeries and was a real help to us.

I could never narrow it down to a list of "favorite" songs or artists. What I CAN do though, is limit it to, "If I could only listen to one type of music or one artist for the rest of my life...?" It's not quite the same thing, but it should suffice here.
For the type of music, it would be the old Motown stuff from the '60s and '70s. Too many artists to list, and all of it still sounds as good as it ever did. Special shout-out to The Funk Brothers, who basically WERE the Motown sound. They were the Motown studio musicians, and they played with EVERYBODY.
For the artist, it would probably be George Benson. Listed as one of the greatest jazz guitarists, it is his versatility that I prize. He can play, and play well, in jazz, smooth jazz, R&B, soul, blues, even pop. Vocals, instrumental... Either way. Doesn't matter. It's like having multiple sounds available, wrapped up in one guy.
And no, I very rarely listen to anyone from 1990-2000 on. There are too many things that I like already that I don't have enough time for. There is neither the time nor the desire to add more to the list.

This is my current theme song for the holiday season. When I finally looked it up, it was of course it had to be Amy Grant. I have at least one of her CDs in the house.

I think this remains my favorite song. Would like to sing it, if my next groom will appreciate it.

I am with Tallguy on a number of his likes. I grew up in the fifties, started really listening to music in the sixties. Motown was it. George Benson sings my favorite song of all time: Rainy Night In Georgia. Nothing better than that.
Liked the Moody Blues in the sixties and seventies. In the seventies it was Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young). Also like(d) individual singers like Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro. I also liked dance music when out drinking.
Never a big fan of hard rock. Too hard of the ears. I prefer softer music. Relaxing music. I like some New Age music.
I still like some pop music. Has to have good rythym though. Not that interested in the words-just the sound and beat. Today I listen mostly to rythym and blues music.
A performance I have been watching on Youtube since July is a 15-year-old Dutch singer named Emma Kok. Ms Kok suffers from Gastroparesis. She gets her food from a feeding tube. Violinist and conductor André Rieu invited her to sing with his Johann Strauss Orchestra in Maastricht, the Netherlands where he also lives. Ms. Kok sang the song Voilà which was sung by the French Contestant in 2021 during the Eurovision Song Contest. The message of Voilà is self acceptance. The song is sung in French by MS. Kok. Ms. Kok's is acompanied by the Johann Strauss Orchestra. She has one hell of a voice for a 15-year-old.
If you have time, give the video a watch.

George Benson has done a LOT of remakes, and although I love George, Benton's version is classic. Two of my favorites for George Benson were both written by Leon Russell: This Masquerade and Lady Blue.

Everything, everythig is built around her performance. The director watches her and conducts everyone else based on where he thinks she is going. She does not even glance at the first chair violinist for cues (second leader on an orchestral floor). It is all staged for the camera. For the people listening to the performance.

O, and yes it is exceptional. But I am sure the opening and almost everything was practiced a lot. (And as someone at least 50% German, I know the Dutch are more hardcore than us in certain ways.)

I saw this last night, and didn't want to respond from my phone b/c I knew I was gonna write a novel. lol.. I listen to a pretty wide variety of music, and have no problem planning vacations around live music and the friends I've made over the years from these trips. the list is probably shorter of what I won't listen to - EDM, thrasher death metal, the hardest rap, and the auto-tuned crap they call pop these days. lol... honestly, anything that's going to be presented with strobes and laser shows is just off the table for me. there are a number of current pop artists that I respect as amazingly talented, but their stuff just isn't my jam these days. I much prefer smaller venues to see shows, rather than the huge stadium presentations. I've gone to some stadium shows of artists I knew way back when, and knew those would be my last time seeing them. I am so proud of where they have made it to, but it's not at all the same experience. (ex - Zac Brown Band) in my 20y of music cruising, I've seen everyone from 90s alternative/pop artists, current country artists, the surviving Beach Boys, Isley and Righteous Bros, up and coming indie artists, artists that have gone HUGE after their sailings like Zac Brown and Luke Combs, more 90s artists coming back out to tour again, and on and on. if I'm not home, I'm almost always plugged in to Sirius XM. The Highway, Y2Kountry, PopRocks and the 60s station are the most common. I'm a sucker for 60s British Invasion stuff, and actually went to go see Herman's Hermits by myself a few years ago as nobody local wanted to go. I'm not an artist, and would likely get arrested if I tried to sing in public but music is in my blood, in my soul. I can typically find a song or lyric for pretty much any situation, and love discovering new-to-me artists. recent favorites include the many powerful female solo country singers that have blown up and gotten more air time in recent years. Ashley McBryde, Maren Morris, Lainey Wilson to name a few. I love that the ladies are calling out some of the bullshit they have broken through, like Maddie and Tae's "Girl in a Country Song" for industry BS. Mickey Guyton's "Black Like Me" for general life BS. I can list more if anyone's interested I don't think I could narrow it down to any single/few favorite artists or songs. but I can certainly recommend some fantastic up-and-comers in a number of genres if anyone else wants to explore more!

I'm pretty sure the young lady, the director and the orchestra and chorus practiced the music together well before the final performance.

If you are in my car you are listening to Sirius E Street Radio. After that, the Beatles, Billy Joel in that order. Rolling Stones, The Who, Dire Straits, Tom Petty, Mellencamp, Southside Johnny, Bruce Hornsby, Phil Collins, Talking Heads. I concur with Motown love and George Benson love.
Not a fan of jazz in general, but I do like David Brubeck. Also like jazz Christmas music. Go figure

This has me totally baffled. What in the heck are you trying to say here? Asked as a ~100% Dutch born and raised person ->my brother took the family tree back to the early 1600s, as did a cousin on my mother's side of the family), but without a DNA test I am not claiming 100%. I just don't get how you claim to understand the Dutch based on your German DNA. Believe or not there have always been huge cultural differences between the countries though that has lessened somewhat in the last few decades. Mind you my comment is not a criticism of you, just genuine curiosity as it represents an from-the-outside-looking-in POV

I'm all over the map from the Stones, Mellencamp, Paul Simon, Springsteen to most jazz and some pop and newer country.

What I won't listen to is contemporary bro county. That shit is absolute lowest common denominator garbage. I don't care about your sweet truck, solo cup, or small town "values."
So that's the easy answer. Aside from that garbage, if the music is good then I will enjoy it. My favorite genres are ska, punk, new wave, and the 90s between 93-96.

SNL replayed the time that Paul Simon wore a turkey costume and started singing 'Still Crazy After All these years'. He storms off and he says it isn't workig for him, he wanted to be a good sport but this is too much. Gets stuck in the hallway and then waits and says And please open my door. This costume is too big for me to do it. Scene Ends. My jazz is particular. Some I like, some I've learned to like and some just rubs me the wrong way.

Like everyone here, I listen to a lot of music, but my favorite artist is Tracy Chapman. Somehow I always go back to her for comfort.
