Barbie will crush right-wingers' dreams like ripvanwinkle's who want the old days back. Hopefully Rip won't burn a Barbie doll in protest.

Tell me you've never played with Barbie without telling me you have never played with Barbie. This is a woman who owns her own house outright, has had multiple careers and has never officially married her himbo boyfriend Ken.
AND she raises her three (four?), sisters as a single woman!
This is like when they attacked Sesame Street for turning woke because Big Bird got the COVID shot. REALLY?! Sesame Street "turned" woke? Do you live under a rock?

And there is this: Barbie’s measurements are in fact so impossible that if she were a real woman she would have to walk on all four legs because her body is so disproportional (Olson 2014). She would be 100 pounds and 6 feet tall. Her waist circumference would be 16 inches, while the average American woman has a 35-inch waist. A 16-inch waist only has enough room for half a liver and a few inches of intestine. Her legs are 50% longer than her arms, while the average woman’s is only 20% longer. Barbie’s waist to hip ratio is 0.56 compared to the average woman’s of .80 (Olson 2014). link

We all knew Barbie was a doll she wasn't meant to be realistic. Far more damaging were magazines like Seventeen that encouraged things how to obtain the perfect body for prom and stuff like that.

It was an image of the female body I grew up with. You had no other females in your life to compare Barbie to and realize Barbie didn't look like anyone you have seen in RL? That would have been a very reasonable and rational thing to do. And it was something I did once my brain matured to be more reasonable and rational. That was about the time I learned about those articles in Seventeen magazine.

What does a sex scene in the movie have to do with Bills thinking the doll was an image of the female body? I just can't imagine any kid thinking that is what men and women are supposed to look like....they don't even have nipples, something every kid has. Did he think they fell off when we grew into adults?

How about the fact that neither Barbie nor Ken had any genitals? lol Ken's underwear is tattooed on. That should have been a rather large clue that the dolls aren't representative of real people.

I certainly should have assessed that fact at 3/4/5 years old observing my older sister play with her Barbie.

Adding to the discussion: Research by Developmental Psychology, a peer-reviewed academic journal, revealed that girls from ages three to eight who were given the “original Barbie” had lower self-esteem and more body image issues than girls who had no Barbie at all. While such expectations can fade with time when girls become women and realize that the Barbie body is entirely unrealistic and unattainable for anyone, those standards often imperceptibly linger. link

But couldn't you tell looking at your own mother, and any other women you saw out and about that Barbie was not representative of what actual women look like? But I get being young and not understanding things, I thought I could be a dragon when I grow up (when I was 4).

I didn't know that women weren't all going to have big boobs like that, and that most of those boobs were fake. lol I was very disappointed!

I'm still waiting for the "rubenesque" shape to be back in style, LOL! However, Kim Kardashian and her large booty are close.

This film is extremely successful. I thinks its just that people have had enough the moaners and the doomsayers and they just want to lose themselves in a couple of hours of sweet silliness. I want some of those shoes.

I was no bimbo. I was a big brother to many girls during my teen years. A nice guy they wouldn't date, but ask me for advice.

No, I haven't seen the movie. I can only guess that the GOP is offended because although Barbie is a "girlie girl" (likes fashion, wears a lot of pink, etc.) she has worked a lot of different professional careers, and has chosen her own destiny. Ken and Barbie leave Barbie land, where women are in charge of everything, and go out into the real world where Ken discovers the patriarchy. He brings it back to Barbieland and he and all the other Kens impose a patriarchy on it. Barbie outsmarts him by causing all the Kens to fight each other - and in the end, everyone realizes that nobody should always be in charge, everyone should share. The GOP is screaming’woke.’

Not that I saw the movie, I went to see Oppenheimer at the IMAX theater like the science nerd I am. Sat transfixed for the full 3 hours. Maybe the best movie ever, Cillian Murphy is maybe the best leading man ever.
Two protests against it - an Irish guy playing a Jew and two characters having sex while holding and reading from a Hindu religious book.
