Thanks, I needed the reminder that Americans have been living in fear of "others" for dare I say the last century.

I guess it's a losing battle to believe that America could be a successful "Melting Pot" that welcomes all people.

My childhood was a lie. Maybe the Right is right - and we need to stop lying to our children that humans can live in peace and that everyone is equal and that a child can grow up to be whatever they want to be.   Just teach kids to sit down, shut up, and accept whatever they are given.  Of course, some kids  will get a "silver spoon" and have better lives.    Maybe  Thomas Hobbes was right  life is nasty, brutish and short.   And we should all just accept our lot in life.

I still remember the case of the woman who got by the police in her own driveway in her PJs. Probably was a white woman, so some might be less sympathetic, however the policeman who shot her knew she was on the property. He literally went off full cocked and shot her dead before assessing the threat. Shoot first if you feel your life is threated is either part of the training or being a less thn present police officer he was paying attention in the wrong direction and shot out of panic.

A20-year-old woman was shot and killed Saturday after she and three others accidentally turned into the wrong driveway while looking for a friend’s house in rural upstate New York, authorities said.

The woman, identified as Kaylin Gillis, was a passenger in a vehicle when a man, 65-year-old Kevin Monahan, fired two shots from his front porch, Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy said in a news conference Monday. One of the shots hit the vehicle and struck Gillis, the sheriff said.

“It’s a very rural area with dirt roads. It’s easy to get lost. They drove up this driveway for a very short time, realized their mistake and were leaving, when Mr. Monahan came out and fired two shots,” the sheriff said, adding that the area has poor cell phone service.

Monahan has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death, Murphy said. He was arraigned Sunday on the murder charge, his attorney told CNN. A bail hearing is pending for Tuesday or Wednesday, the district attorney and defense attorney both said.

Oh no there is but it's not for anyone deemed "other".  I have to respect them being up in my uterus, banning books in my libraries, not allowing my friends to marry and dictating what religion I have to follow as they wave their God given guns in my face otherwise I am being "intolerant" and "not accepting other views".

This is what happens when we cater too intolerance in the name of "exploring every angle" and "allowing for different view points" and "seeing both sides".

Guns are the problem is just another lefty liberal talking point. A couple of towns over there are neighborhoods being terrorized by young adults (could be kids) jumping out of a care then they scatter to each house and try to break into their car. They get shot oh well

To be fair, I'm not sure there ever really was. In days past, it just so happened that the prevailing societal norms kept most "others" in the closet and afraid to live openly. 

As that has shifted over time, and the more conservative and regressive among us have seen their bigotry denounced rather than embraced, they have reacted more and more violently. 

And while I don't fully buy into the "economic anxiety" argument they tried to sell as to why white assholes supported Trump in record numbers. I do think the erosion of the middle class, and the increasing consolidation of wealth to fewer and fewer, plays a part in this. People are mad, and desperate, and I think it is taking less and less to set them off. 

What most conservatives fail to see is that while both parties play a part in this fucked up economic system, the Republican party is more culpable than their Democratic counterparts.

I used to have a much more moderate view on gun rights. I grew up in Maine, and during hunting season it was totally normal to see people driving around in cars with visible guns on racks. 

As time has passed, and I see the depraved indifference from so called gun rights supports, I become more and more convinced there is no reasonable middle ground. How can there be when they can't be reasoned with? If they can't concede that a semi-automatic rifle has no place in the hands of civilians, what discussion is there to have?

I can't speak to NYC, but I live in KC. MO and KS are about as red a state as they can be. KC is a more tolerant city, but there are still plenty of bigoted assholes here. There are Trump signs all over the place and people have all that crap on their cars/houses. You must not have been here before or not in a long time.

Upstate New York is not liberal or Democrat.  And whether Kansas City itself voted for Biden or not, it is still subject to state laws and Missouri is one of the reddest states we have.  Try again.
